Description
Nostalgia princess and film writer Kate Santos & comedy queen / podcast host for What’s Your Sign? Stevie Anderson rediscover 1990s films through a critical (and comedic) lens for a podcast that asks the daring question: Is this move sh*t, is it high concept, or is it somewhere in-between? Stock your Y2K pantry, load up the VCR, and pull out some Fruit Roll Ups as the two hosts guide you through the culturally-ignored and critically-forgotten mainstream films of the 1990s.

Hand-to-groin contact, a bloody brain transplant, and a Denise Richards striptease– the gore cut of the 1994 b-movie Tammy and the T-Rex DVD was well worth our wait. The hosts take on the plot of the classic sci-fi film in which Paul Walker transforms into a tyrannosaurus rex by a strange scientist after being mauled by a tiger and left for dead by a murderous (high school) biker gang whose leader is in love with Tammy, played by Shiterion favorite Denise Richards. The hosts also discuss tokenism, Coppola’s The Outsiders, b-movie tropes of the 1980s, and theorize about whether Paul Walker is the grandson of Tammy director Stewart Raffill (who also directed the McDonalds film Mac and Me). This last episode of Season 2 of The Shiterion Collection is dedicated to the late Paul Walker. We love you! In the 99th episode of The Shiterion Collection, the hosts discuss the Charlie Kaufman film Human Nature, released in 2001. The list of names involved in creating the film consists of many of the most talented people ever to exist in the film industry– including director Michel Gondry, Academy Award-winning actors Tim Robbins and Patricia Arquette, and Spike Jonze as a producer. Despite a zany plot, an A-list cast (with cameos from Hilary Duff, Peter Dinklage, and Rosie Perez) and a heady philosophical message, the film was unsuccessful at the box office and unpopular with critics. Eighteen years later, the Shiterion hosts discuss the vibrant, whimsical, beautiful and sad worlds of both Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry, the film’s bigger messages on human evolution and ecology, and, as Roger Ebert put it: “the film’s screwball charm”. If you can’t find the film at your local video store (support physical media!), its available to purchase on iTunes. Follow The Shiterion Collection! A teen psycho thriller for the instant message era, Swimfan was released in 2002 to lukewarm reviews all echoing the same sentiment– critics believed (and still believe) the film is a lesser Fatal Attraction set in the world of high school competitive swimming. Starring hunk of the year Jesse Bradford alongside blonde teen-goddess Erika Christensen, the film hits a lot of the notes we love to see in a high school erotic thriller– including a steamy pool sex scene and over-the-top violence. The hosts discuss the thriller genre as it pertained to hormone-driven teens, scary stalkers, and the cult of Jesse Bradford. Straight to video and into America's hearts, The Olsen Twins set the bar when it came to tween content. From 1992 to 2004, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen starred in a total of 36 movies and have now disappeared into obscurity, running successful fashion lines with a super fat net worth. Your hosts take a look at straight to video, surreal escapade Billboard Dad filmed when they were just 12-years-old. Your hosts discuss the camp that is an Olsen twin movie, the OGs of the cool girl aesthetic, and make a public plea to MK & A to let us write their official biography. Director Todd Solondz made waves in 1995 with the debut of his independent film Welcome to the Dollhouse which is set in a world all too familiar world (the suburbs) but from a perspective never before explored– from the eyes of a dorky lonely tween girl named Dawn Weiner. Bullied for being ugly and desperate for the attention of a hot high school musician, Dawn’s world is sad, funny, and feels true to life– making the film a realistic exploration of the sexuality and alienation that awaits everyone on the other side of puberty. A precursor to the mumble-cringe at-school indie genre that spurred titles like Napoleon Dynamite and Ghost World, the film also serves as indisputable inspiration for more modern works including Eighth Grade and PEN15. The hosts discuss middle school, rape jokes, and Dawn's trendsetting style. A tale as olde as time! Today's film was a 1998 update on the modern Cinderella story and possibly the must ultimate sleepover movie ever. Your hosts Kate and Stevie discuss Drew Barrymore's effortless aesthetic, the historical accuracy, and Anjelica Huston's on set love affair with a horse wrangler that almost (literally) killed her! Your hosts have hacked into the mainframe. ;) We take a look at 1995's The Net, a film that asks: what would the society be like in a world where computers knew everything about us? ...Yes...sounds so bizarre...can't relate. We talk the cult of Sandra Bullock and her knack for the Shiterion, Mozart's Ghost, the impressive resume of Irwin Winkler, and living in the digital age—duh! Follow The Shiterion Collection! Post-college graduation quarter-life crisis intellectual chatty comedies were at their height in the mid-1990s with directors like Noah Baumbach and Whit Stillman pioneering the genre. Another genre was simultaneously emerging– the “angst generation” life-after-punk rock films that chronicled 20-somethings disillusioned with their futures. Glory Daze is a 1996 film that attempts to combine both movements, and fails horrendously. A talented cast (along with some stragglers) led Ben Affleck, the film follows a group of graduating party boys in their adventures in sex, booze, and becoming slackers. Featuring a great soundtrack (with a few terrible songs about poop), the film succeeds in bringing up serious issues but the writing lacks the depth to bring any of those issues into focus. The hosts discuss toxic masculinity, Sam Rockwell, and the angst generation. If you can’t find the film at your local video store (support physical media!), its available to stream through Hoopla with your library card. Follow The Shiterion Collection! Billy Crystal was at the height of his comedy career, but this movie all about height ended up falling short. My Giant (1998) tried to be an ode to Andre the Giant, but just turned into a big old ball of depressing male bullshit. We discuss the second creepiest kiss in Shiterion history, the sad reality of Hollywood and show business, & why creating a movie around one schtick just doesn't stick! Romance and intrigue, murder and mayhem– the 1996 neo-noir erotic thriller Fear may have been a sleeper-hit at the box office but quickly found its place on the video store shelf as a scary sleepover staple. The film stars a young Reese Witherspoon opposite Mark Wahlberg, early in their now-successful film careers. Witherspoon plays Nicole, a sweet, smart and curious teenaged girl who falls for the ultra-hot David (played by Wahlberg), a sensitive boy who is hiding a dark past. A teenaged love story with an erotic-horror bent, the film features an idyllic setting in Washington state, an exploration of parent-child relationships, and the show-stopping scene on a rollercoaster no one can forget. The hosts discuss everything from Mark Wahlberg’s sketchy past to the very 1996 fashion on display throughout the film. Follow The Shiterion Collection! Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid star in this pre-9/11 musical comedy as the cat ear-wearing mega-label pop band Josie and the Pussycats. Although the film is based on the comic of the same name from the Archie Universe, the plot is thoroughly early-naughts featuring a cameo from Carson Daly (then engaged to Reid) and a satirical boy band impersonating The Backstreet Boys. Over-the-top villains played by Alan Cumming and Parker Posey bring the high-camp drama to what fashions itself as a light-hearted teen flick but delivers so much more. The hosts discuss the film's critique of rampant consumerism that trudges over artistic talent as well as the possible reasons the film performed poorly at the box office. 1997's Anaconda featured an all-star cast –Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson, and Jon Voight– in the creature feature of a decade. The film follows a couple of poachers as they coax a documentary film crew into helping them find the largest snake in the world. Unlike many B-movies of the 90s, the film leans into the funny– making it a mainstay movie on cable networks. The hosts discuss real anaconda attacks, the brilliance of Jon Voight, and the (IRL) Amazon fires contributing to climate change. Follow The Shiterion Collection! Adapted from Chuck Palahniuk's book of the same name, Fight Club (1999) was a dense, heady smash DVD hit that has remained a cult classic. The film revolves around the life of an unnamed narrator (Edward Norton) who lives his life in an alienating office job only to go home surrounded by Ikea furniture in his city condo. Attempting to work through his depressed feelings (which have manifested into physical symptoms like insomnia), he attends an array of support groups where he meets the also-depressed Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter in an iconic role). He also meets a new best friend in Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and together, they start a fight club that quickly rises in popularity among men. The hosts discuss the directing genius of David Fincher, various Easter eggs, and how –despite the fact that there are so many films about men– there are few films that explore modern masculinity. So let go and dive in...I guess? Your hosts discuss thee manic pixie dream girl movie of all movies, 2004's Garden State. After Zach Braff was cut a $2.5 million dollar check to make whatever the hell he felt like he made...this?! Ok! We chat how the movie actually won a Grammy for the soundtrack (I mean, it was good), how Zach Braff tricked Natalie Portman into being in this movie, and the undoubtable force that is Jean Smart, the working man's Annette Bening and how they should have been in a buddy cop movie by now. Allegations of rape shake an affluent Florida swamp town in the 1998 VHS classic Wild Things. Starring Denise Richards as a teenaged femme fatale, the film follows Matt Dillon's character, a high school guidance counselor, through a series of events that land him in the hot seat. The hosts discuss the acting talents brought forth by the star-studded cast as well as the film's other merits– including a killer score and sweeping cinematography that showcases the wild Floridian landscape. The film is unique in its ability to steer the audience through a labyrinth of twists and turns without ever feeling trite or boring– landing it a rightful place on the "cult classics" shelf. BONUS EPISODE TIME! Your hosts Kate and Stevie attended the Cinespia screening of Bring It On, so they decided to talk about it! If you like mom’s spaghetti, hip-hop, and/or “stan” Eminem then the 2008 film 8 Mile starring the rapper as a version of himself up against poverty (and… racism???) could be for you. After being discovered by Dr. Dre in the late-90s, Eminiem rose to fame as a controversial cultural figure who inarguably ruled MTV and the hip-hop airwaves during the early-2000s. Dubbed as a vanity project by some critics, the hosts review the melodramatic film based on his gritty life story. Despite the clunky script and strange blue-noir cinematography, the film features an Academy Award-winning cast and crew, including Kim Bassinger as Eminem’s hot (but kinda-troubled) mom. Unfortunately, as the second film in The Shiterion Collection’s Brittany Murphy Double Feature, the film doesn’t feature the iconic actress as prominently as remembered. To atone for this, the hosts will be back with another Brittany Murphy joint before the end of the season. Follow The Shiterion Collection! To pre-teens and teens growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, Brittany Murphy was an ICON. Her performances in Clueless and Girl, Interrupted prove that there's no denying– she was the "it girl". One of the last films she made before she died, The Ramen Girl was Murphy's early foray into producing. Although the film received little publicity, it shows off Murphy's unforgettable acting talent and her skills in developing a character that is flawed yet lovable. The hosts discuss cultural differences in Japan, the pre-foodie era, and the behind-the-scenes of a film that features one of the best talents of a generation. Follow The Shiterion Collection! Candyman...candyman...candyman...candyman...yeah right! We're not saying it a 5th time, are you nuts!?! This Clive Barker joint is a slice of horror heaven set in a brutalist Chicago background with a kickass Philip Glass score. The film takes place in the socially complex setting of the notorious Cabrini Green housing projects, but the film uses the wanna-be-white savior Virginia Madsen and powerhouse horror king Tony Todd to show its audience that maybe...just maybe...the fear we project on less desirable neighborhoods comes from the evil that's inside us all along.
