A debrief of my experience at the National Sports Collectors Convention "The National" and SoCo Expo leading into a discussion on my feelings about collecting in a booming market. Andres aka ⁨@champvanderford⁩ 's (humerous) observations about my behavior:[David Attenborough voice] “And here… we witness one of the hobby’s most fascinating predators in its natural habitat: James AKA @madcitycollector. Notice the subtle shift in posture. His ears perk. His eyes narrow. A single whispered rumor of a long-sought card has reached him.” “The scent has been picked up.” “Within seconds, instinct takes over. There is no hesitation. No wasted movement. Like a lion catching the faint aroma of vulnerable prey drifting across the Serengeti… or an ox detecting fresh grazing beyond the horizon… James breaks from the herd with unwavering purpose. Every showcase becomes potential territory. Every dealer, a possible watering hole.” “The PreMo Mafia watches in silence. They know this look. Conversation ceases. The hunt has begun… and it will not end until the quarry is either captured… or proven to be nothing more than legend.”
What's in a design?

What's in a design?

What are the design elements of cards that make collectors want to own them? Design alone doesn't make a card desirable but it is certainly a core features that helps cards stand out in the crowd. These design elements are integral to the art form of trading cards. I go through some examples from my collection to highlight some of the core design elements that make their way into soccer cards and why I appreciate them, especially with my recent run of Topps Premier Gold Wayne Rooney cards that was a main focus for my 2026 collecting goals. I share my observations about how traditional and pop art motifs have started to appear in the sports card space and have translated into some of the more successful recent cards such as Kabooms.
Collecting the Moment

Collecting the Moment

With the World Cup capturing everyone's attention, I examine how I navigate collecting "moments" whether in the past or present. It opens up a discussion for meaning in collecting, even what the backs of cards contribute to our memories and nostalgia for different players and moments projected forward. I highlight examples of how I've collected moments consciously and subconsciously and how it's added to my enjoyment of collecting.
I invite Andrew @st_croix_cards on IG into this live discussion about how major trophies in soccer affect the collectibility of the players and teams. As an Arsenal supporter, Andrew has insight into how their first Premier League trophy in 22 year contributes to the collectibility of this team as well as how a Champions League win on Saturday affects the trajectory of Arsenal and PSG players, We will also dive into the upcoming World Cup and how success there may or may not lead to a strong hobby following.
Part two of this two part series I explore how I would use a long term approach rather than short term speculative strategy to collect the "players to watch' in the 2026 World Cup.
