Zach Gill

Zach Gill

I’ve developed quite the report with many of the artists on the Jam Band scene in Northern California. Many of them aren’t just great musicians, but also great people who inspire all of us with their great music. Zach Gill’s full time gig is playing keyboards and other instruments with ALO but he’s also had a successful career putting out solo records. Cocktail Yoga is his fourth such effort plus the two EPs he’s put out as well. Not to mention his work with Jack Johnson and DJango. This dude is generally very busy, but with COVID-19 he’s had some down time, so when we caught up to talk about Cocktail Yoga the conversation started when I asked what inspired the new record, aside from some down time.  First Song: 00:14: King Dancers Delight Interview Begins: 04:55 Extro Song: 26:48: Thread The Needle See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

While the title of the new album for Blitzen Trapper’s 10th release due out September 25th, may suggest something on the lighter side, Holy Smokes Future Jokes is certainly not that. It deals with a great many existential and deep questions about life and death. Because the album is so deep when we hooked up with frontman and lyricist Eric Early I wondered what the most challenging part of making this record may have been. With the future of what Blitzen Trapper will be after this release, somewhat in question, I can assure you, that Holy Smokes Future Jokes is a must tune. After all, this is the 10th album by the band with Eric Earley at the helm in 20 years. That’s some pretty prolific stuff from one of the Northwest’s finest roots/americana band. Joan Osborne

Joan Osborne

2020-09-1135:49

It’s been six years since Joan Osborne put out a record of original material, but her new 10 song record Trouble and Strife absolutely makes up for the wait. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved the Bob Dylan covers record, and all the live playing she did to go along with it, plus her contributions to the first version of Trigger Hippy, but I think we can all agree that Joan has always had a very strong voice for socio-political advocacy in her writing and it’s something that’s been missing from the landscape. By the way, I’ve known since we started this podcast back in 2016 that Joan Osborne was absolutely one of the people we wanted to have on the show, because of her diverse and eclectic background, and because she was such an integral part of the new Jam Band scene in New York in the late 80s and early 90s. Basically I’m an unabashed fan of this woman’s voice, her body of work, and her overall talent. So it was an absolute delight to sit down with her to talk about the new album, and much more, including some of the things mentioned in this intro. Our conversation started though, when I asked what took so long for new Joan Osborne material. Garcia Peoples

Garcia Peoples

2020-09-0738:45

Indie Band Garcia Peoples will release their 4th studio record “Nightcap at Wit’s End” October 8th. You’d think with a name like Garcia Peoples, the band would be inspired by their name sake Jerry Garcia, and while that certainly is the case, to get the essence of this band and their sound, you may have to rely on your ears, imagination, and harken back to the very early Dead records and performances during their acid test days and more psychedelic phase of the band. Though their sound is a fair bit more eclectic than just “psych rock” so when I sat down with Tom Malach and Derek Spaldo, I asked them to describe their sound, and that’s where our conversation started... First Song: 00:56: Crown of Thought Interview Begins: 06:49 Extro Song: 34:33: One at a Time See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
Hayes Carll

Hayes Carll

2020-09-0436:20

The Alone Together Sessions are a collection of 10 re-imagined songs from his career to this point, and a duet with his wife, singer/songwriter Allison Moorer, who also guests on another track which you’ll hear in the show as well. It’s an interesting idea, down the road in a career to think about how you can restructure, and in some cases totally change the way a song sounds from its original. We’ve always enjoyed cover songs, but this is an artist, in Hayes’ case that has in fact covered and reworked his own material. When I sat down with Hayes to talk about the Alone Together Sessions, our conversation started when I asked if the pandemic brought this project to bare, or if it was something he had already been considering. Wood And Wire

Wood And Wire

2020-08-3145:40

Wood & Wire are a special kind of bluegrass band, who stretch the boundaries of what they do beyond typical bluegrass music. Sure there are others that do the same, but Wood & Wire offer something more unique in terms of song structure and style. I suspect that even if you weren’t a typical bluegrass fan, you’d enjoy their music, because it pays homage to so many other genres. That’s what first got me into the band a few years back when I heard North of Despair and had Tony Kamel on the podcast. So I was excited to hear about a new album, and then once I heard it needed to talk shop once again with him. So we caught up, to talk about the new album, the song writing process, special guests and even a little baseball. Seriously check out the new record No Matter Where it Goes From Here, wherever you stream music and for more on Wood & Wire visit woodandwireband.com.  First Song: 00:56: John Interview Begins: 03:45 Extro Song: 39:35: Roadie's Circles (feat. Peter Rowan) See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
Good at Losing Everything is the latest album from The Ghost of Paul Revere, a great band out of Maine, that we absolutely adore. They are a little bit holler folk, straight ahead folk, but mostly good ole' rock n roll, and frankly that's why we love them so. The title track, and the entire album ebbs and flows through their sonic journey, with the human condition in toe, bound up in the pain of loss, love, and life in the band's lyrics. Had the awesome opportunity to sit down with Griffin Sherry, the front man of the band that is ostensibly all boyhood friends. This is a must tune record, one that has been completed for a while, but only released today and that's where our conversation started, when I asked about the long wait the band had to endure before the record was released. Now while Griffin wasn't necessarily being coy with me, at the time of recording, we didn't have all the details yet for "Almost Ghostland", a live streamed event over the Labor Day weekend beginning Thursday September 3rd. The band will play Good at Losing Everything in its entirety that night, and on the following nights have a whole bunch of cool things planned. Khruangbin

Khruangbin

2020-08-2430:31

Khruangbin is a band that has always fascinated me. Hailing from Houston, Texas the trio up until their most release Mordechai has played instrumental psych rock blended with soul and dub. Their blend of these sonic influences is combined world sounds from Thailand, Middle East and Spain. Bizarre right? Not at all. In fact it all seems to blend quite nicely. On their latest release, Mordechai, aside from the lushness of their sound, they’ve added vocals which creates a whole knew exciting layer for the band and their fans. We caught up with bassist Laura Lee and Drummer DJ Johnson to talk about the bands music, collaborations and other fun stuff. Molly Tuttles surprise covers album ...but I'd rather be with you drops today. We caught up with the singer songwriter, to talk about the record, and much more. Our conversation started when I asked about the East Nashville storms of March 5th, and the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.  First Song: 00:56: Olympia, WA  Interview Begins: 05:04 Extro Song: 26:54: Standing On The Moon See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

The struggle for band’s to make a living in the time of COVID-19 has been well documented. So we’re not going to mention it again. Instead we’re going to celebrate a band like the Kitchen Dwellers who have been very active putting out an EP, doing some live streaming and performing live for small groups of people as part of a really innovative offering. So we caught up with Torrin the banjo playing wizard of the band to get his take on what’s been keeping the band busy. Our conversation started when I asked Torrin about the release of the new Reheated 2 EP which features as you’ve heard of Pink Floyd covers.  First Song: 00:56: Welcome to the Machine Interview Begins: 06:50 Extro Song: 21:03 - Hey You See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
Allman Betts Band

Allman Betts Band

2020-08-1446:44

I’ve had the pleasure of talking with Devon Allman and Duane Betts both individually and together both on the phone and in person. Each interaction has been totally cool, as both dudes are extremely cool and so knowledgeable and creative. It’s a testament not only to their lineage but likely more importantly insight into their love of their craft and this project that while still exciting isn’t as fresh as it once was. On August 28th the Allman Betts Band will release Bless Your Heart only a year since their debut Down to the River. Bless Your Heart though their sophomore album is hardly sophomoric. It is filled with a series of great tunes, performances and great vibes. What more can you ask from this seven piece outfit that’s fronted by two solid individuals.  First Song: 00:56: Magnolia Road Interview Begins: 06:10 Extro Song: 41:46 - Pale Horse Rider See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Kenny Roby

Kenny Roby

2020-08-0935:40

Kenny Roby is a singer-songwriter who has had an accomplished 20 year career that includes his former band 6 String Drag. They were a southern alt-country outfit who were part of that scene that included Whiskeytown, The Drive by Truckers, Drivin’ & Cryin’ amongst others in the mid 90s. Since the dissolution of 6 String Drag, Kenny has been on his own, making records, and trading songs with Neal Casal. In fact, Resevoir was to be produced by the late Neal Casal who passed a month before the production was to begin.  Dave Schools of Widespread Panic fame, but a great record producer in his own right, who knew of Kenny’s work through Neal, stepped in to produce the record with Jesse Aycock, John Lee Shannon, Jeff Hill and Tony Leone providing the backing band. The record is exquisite and deals with themes that were very personal to Kenny including his own mental health and substance abuse struggles, the break up of his marriage and ultimately getting through those challenges in hopes a better life.  We caught up with Kenny Roby to talk about the album, and our conversation started when I asked him about how tragic Neal Casal’s passing was for him personally.  First Song: 00:56: Old Love  Interview Begins: 04:38 Extro Song: 31:34 - I'm Gonna Love Again See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
Jesse Miller of Lotus

Jesse Miller of Lotus

2020-08-0735:03

It’s getting harder and harder these days to figure out what genre any band fits into. Take Lotus for example. Are they Electronica, Jamtronica, a jam band, a disco band? Who the hells knows. One thing is for certain though, they are wicked good at what they do, and their forthcoming release Free Swim is an absolute sonic delight. I don’t just throw that out there, I’ve listened to Free Swim several times, and I have to say it truly is one of their best albums to date, and perhaps one of my favorite of 2020. So I had to catch up with Jesse Miller to talk about the new record, it’s inspiration, the songs, and all the twists and turns Free Swim takes. Our conversation started when I asked Jesse, if after 9 albums, countless live releases and EPs, if making a record, their 10th in fact is still an important endeavour. First Song: 00:56: Catacombs Interview Begins: 07:27 Extro Song: 29:52 - Bjorn Gets a Haircut See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
