Joe May of Pluto Gang

Joe May of Pluto Gang

Pluto Gang is a 6 piece band from Charlotte, North Carolina and they have a super interesting story, one that probably would have been told very differently if not for COVID-19, the pandemic and the lockdowns. In fact, the irony is that the pandemic may have sped things along for the band, in terms of putting out music, and beginning their rise within the Jam Band community. It's not often that new music strikes me, but when I got Better Out Here, I reached out immediately. Only after making a connection with keyboardist Joe May, did I learn that these guys were into a lot of the same music we are into, and have in fact covered many Grateful Dead tunes, and get this, Wysteria Lane from Goose. So of course, I wanted to introduce you to them, and made sure Joe joined us to talk about Pluto Gang on behalf of his bandmates. Our conversation started when I asked Joe to tell me about the Pluto Gang sound... First Song: 00:14: Free Time Interview Begins: 03:46 Extro Song: 27:46: MYSS See for privacy information.

Peter Anspach of Goose

Peter Anspach of Goose

Rising stars Goose got on the COVID-19, pandemic, isolation train pretty quickly back in the spring, and created a virtual summer event called "Bingo Tour" that consisted of four shows and six additional days of activities for their community and fans all live streamed for a fee in late June.. Those shows and indeed the entire programming for "Bingo Tour" were very well regarded and well attended. On November 25th, the band will release a video compilation of those live shows, along with a 55 minute behind the scenes look into the making of what was an unprecedented week of digital content. I caught up with Peter Anspach, the band's keyboard and occasional guitar player, to talk about the event, and what fans can expect from the Bingo Tour Movie. Our conversation started when I asked specifically about pioneering this notion of creating an event for their fans and how quickly they got the ball rolling on creating it. For more on the band, or to get the Bingo Tour Movie visit  First Song: 00:14: Hot Tea Interview Begins: 14:16 Extro Song: 42:09: Creatures See for privacy information.
I’ve been a fan of Aqueous for quite some time and have always been impressed with Mike Gantzer’s approach to the band’s evolution. With the Covid-19 pandemic still in our midst, bands like Aqueous are short on options to play live and make a living. So with the release of the Ardmore concert, I decided to catch up with Mike Gantzer and find out what he and his band mates are up to.  First Song: 00:14: 6s and 7s Interview Begins: 11:14 Extro Song: 37:54: Good Days See for privacy information.

If this pandemic, and the general malaise of 2020 has taught me anything, it is to be prepared for just about anything. So when word broke earlier this week that we would be getting some new music from Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, sooner rather than later, I was psyched to hook up with Adam Greuel of the band to talk about Miles in Blue, the band's forthcoming release, due out November 25th. Of course aside from talking about music, and the new record, we had time for Greuel's other project Berens and Greuel, and obviously the Green Bay Packers. Adam and I spoke as he was making his way around Wisconsin to a video shoot in Milwuakee ... For more on the Horseshoes and Hand Grenades visit First Song: 00:14: Broke Interview Begins: 03:35 Extro Song: 37:44: Ope Nope See for privacy information.

Steep Canyon Rangers

Steep Canyon Rangers

Grammy award winning Steep Canyon Rangers recently released their first album of 2020 Arm in Arm. I say that somewhat tongue and cheek, because this latest release follows two great releases in 2019 North Carolina Songbook and Be Still Moses. The album which was recorded over several days at the Southern Ground Studios in Nashville is filled with exquisite playing, great song writing and beautiful harmonies. The album certainly expands on the bands sound, while paying respect to their early Bluegrass influence which at this point they’ve exceeded sonically. Fortunately we’ve had guitarist Woody Platt on the show previously, so we got in touch to have him back in to talk about this latest release, perhaps the best collection of songs for this band to date.  First Song: 00:14: Sunny Days Interview Begins: 05:10 Extro Song: 30:24: Honey on My Tongue See for privacy information.

Cory Henry

Cory Henry

You may know Cory Henry's Hammond B3 sound from his work with Snarky Puppy or his various guest appearances with Vulfpeck. What you may not know is that prior to the release of the Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles debut release in 2018, Art of Love, Cory Henry was content being an instrumentalist, and not a vocalist. Well, since that album was so well received, of course there is a follow up, Something to Say due out October 30th. Cory tackles subjects like love, breakups, social consciousness, injustices and the effects of being emotionally drained. While those topics aren't necessarily pick me up topics, but very serious ones in light of George Floyd's murder, the Black Lives Movement and such, Cory attempts to spin the positivitiy wheel, and inspires us with hope and unification. I caught up with Cory to talk about this new-soul singer-songwriters sophomore release, and suggested to him, that while you have your whole life to prepare for your first album, the second sneaks up pretty quickly. First Song: 00:14: Rise Interview Begins: 04:24 Extro Song: 21:12: Don't Forget See for privacy information.

Andy Hall

Andy Hall

Many years ago I saw Jerry Douglas play here in Toronto with the Derek Trucks Band and I was completely mesmerized by the tone of the dobro and the way in which Jerry commanded the instrument. Since then I’ve had the good fortune of seeing Andy Hall and Anders Beck play live and obviously on tape and I still can’t believe how cool the Dobro, or rather the resophonic guitar sounds when in capable hands. So when I heard Andy Hall the slide/dobro/resophonic guitar player of The Infamous Stringdusters was releasing a record, I thought it would be a great time to get in touch and talk about the record itself, but also the instrument I think we all don’t know enough about. Before we get to his answer, please keep in mind this was recorded some time ago, so by now you know that they’ve played some live shows and have been in the studio making music as a band. Also when we talked about dobro players, I’m sure neither of us purposely forgot to mention Anders Beck, but of course we both hail him in high regard. My conversation though started when I asked Andy if this solo record was planned, or if time away from the Dusters due to the pandemic inspired the release. Reid Genauer

Reid Genauer

Reid Genauer has decided to release an album, Angels and Alibis as part of a Patreon campaign. While Reid has dabbled in other crowd sourced campaigns, it’s the first time he’s used Patreon. So we sat down with this talented musician and expert marketer to learn more about the project, and why he decided to involve his fans in this unique campaign. First Song: 00:14: Angels and Alibis (single) Interview Begins: 04:04 Extro Song: 30:11: Brown Eyed Woman (live cover) See for privacy information.

I’ve been watching Bahamas career grow since his debut in 2009 and Pink Strat. For those that don’t know Bahamas is actually the stage persona of Afie Jurvenen one heck of a guitar player who toiled on the Toronto and Canadian indie scene until being recognized by Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Fairytails who signed him and the rest as they say is history. His music blends all kinds of styles and genres and but his sound is distinctly his. His humble and quiet manner is hardly rock star in any way, and so I was curious how he landed on the ironic Sad Hunk album title and the absolutely oddest album cover... and that’s where our conversation started. First Song: 00:14: Trick To Happy Interview Begins: 03:26 Extro Song: 30:56: Own Alone See for privacy information.
