This week we sit down with our buddy Mark Smith. Mark is a bow tech at Mark's Outdoors in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. We discuss some of Mark's craziest stories of working in a bow shop, and have a discussion about prepping your archery equipment for deer season.
We dive into:
Mark’s journey from martial arts & CrossFit gyms to becoming a trusted bow tech
Wild shop stories — dry fires, broken bows, and hard-learned lessons
Tips for keeping your bow “hunt ready” year-round
Why your broadheads don't hit where your field points do
How some people over-complicate bow tuning
Why southeastern hunters don't need to shoot overly heavy arrow setups
How faith and discipline shape his approach to hunting and life
If you’ve ever had archery gear fail at the worst possible moment — or want to make sure it never does — this episode is packed with hard-earned wisdom and plenty of laughs.

Today on the show, Virginia mountain hunter Ralph Barton breaks down his early-season bowhunting strategy in the big woods. Ralph shares how he scouts for productive acorn trees, pinpoints bedding areas, and uses persistence to get deer into bow range in some of the toughest terrain in the eastern US. From reading feed trees to adjusting stands by just a few yards, his approach shows how to consistently find deer in low-density mountain country consistently.

• How bucks actually use scrapes and rubs to communicate
• The truth about deer scent and why you can’t fool a buck’s nose
• Pre-rut, rut, and post-rut hunting strategies that really work
• Stand placement, access, and how to avoid alerting deer
• What hunters should know about small property management

In this throwback episode, we sit down with our friend Tony Myers, a veteran Alabama hunter who’s been chasing deer since the 1970s. Tony shares lessons he learned from old-timers in the early days, how deer behavior shifted after dog hunting was banned, and the subtle signs that separate consistent hunters from the rest.
We dive into:
Early season scouting strategies and why Tony likes to push close before opener.
Key deer foods like greenbrier, honeysuckle, and white oaks — and how feeding patterns change through the season.
Reading subtle sign, browse lines, and trail intersections most hunters overlook.
Stories of chasing mature bucks in low-density areas and the patience it takes to succeed on public land.
Tony’s insights on observation, timing, and woodsmanship will help you sharpen your early season game.

In this part 2 episode with Alan Altizer, we go deep on the difference in hunting any buck vs. focusing on one buck. We also have an extremley in depth conversation on wind, thermals and how mature bucks use them in ways other deer do not. Other subjects:
The difference in mindset between hunting any buck versus targeting one specific mature buck.
How tactics shift depending on whether you’re hunting for opportunity or for a particular deer.
The role of trail cameras — when they help, when they mislead, and why woodsmanship still matters more.
Instinct and experience as defining qualities of great hunters.
How patience, diligence, and time in the woods separate consistently successful hunters from others.
Why repetition (getting reps) killing deer with a bow builds confidence and sharpens execution.
The importance of woodsmanship skills (judging distance, reading sign, moving quietly, handling wind and thermals).
The difference between being able to kill deer in general vs. consistently killing mature bucks.
The value of learning from mistakes and adapting strategies instead of repeating failures.
The idea that success in hunting mirrors success in life — dedication, persistence, and growth.

In this episode of The Southern Outdoorsmen Podcast, we sit down with legendary hunter Alan Altizer to talk about one of the most powerful deer hunting concepts you’ll ever hear: how a buck’s greatest strength can also be his biggest weakness.Alan shares decades of hard-earned woodsmanship — from reading washed-out tracks and understanding how deer use their senses, to why trail cameras can actually work against you. He explains how mature bucks rely on their strongest traits for survival, and how hunters can use those very strengths to finally outsmart them. • How to read tracks to understand a buck’s behavior • Why some bucks rely more on sight, smell, or sound — and how that changes their bedding • The concept of “kamikaze setups” and making a buck feel safe before moving in • Why trail cameras may give you more problems than solutions • How to exploit a buck’s strengths and turn them into weaknessesGot a question for the show? Today we sit down with a very highly requested guest - Steve Sherk of Sherk's Guide Service.
To run a guiding business on public lands, in a big woods setting, you have to be exceptionally in tuned with how bucks use the woods and move acorss the landscape! Steve has years of experience not only tagging big bucks himself, but also putting other hunters into positions to get a shot at a big woods buck. In this episode, we talk:
The steps Steve takes before the season to be one step ahead
How Steve predicts where bucks will show up in the rut with great accuracy
The first thing to look for in pre-season scouting
Learning plant species that deer love to browse on
Reading the landscape to predict where bucks will be in late summer vs early fall
Steve's trail cam strategy
Why you need cameras on scrapes in late summer
and a ton more!

absolutely the best podcast for the area I'm in. I can relate with different tactics from all their guests. I am very fortunate to have the job that I have in landscaping and can listen to them as I work. the only problem is it makes me want to leave the job and hit the woods. still working on my wall hanger. but have total faith it won't be long I look at the woods totally different. and try to implement woodsmanship every time I'm there. keep up the good work guys. thanks for all your advice and all the great questions you are asking these professional whitetail hunters.
Big fan of Josh and his vids
