In Episode 99 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about the evolution they have gone through in their teaching practice in regards to De-Centring Remembrance Day. In an effort to create an atmosphere where the students and their students are centred with their stories and lived experiences, Chey and Pav think about how they have perhaps been centring a single and dominant narrative in their early years of teaching. Combining their knowledge and understanding of Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy, they have developed a very meaningful activity that utilizes photography to create digital stories that truly highlight and exemplify the identities of the students.  Here are a few links to articles that we used in our research of Reframing Remembrance Day: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13825577.2020.1844411 https://kojoinstitute.com/reframing-remembrance-day-an-equity-informed-approach-for-educators/ https://artmuseumteaching.com/2019/05/31/interrupting-white-dominant-culture/ A rich discussion with several a-ha! moments throughout! In Episode 98 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on a task that ballooned into incredible Identity and Social Justice work in the classroom. Starting with learning about Bilquis Abdul-Qaadir, an American basketball player that fought international bans on wearing the hijab on the court, Chey and Pav were able to take their learning even further with the inclusion of live webinars for the class, and then furthermore, with the introduction of actual, impactful social justice work, initiated by the students and their outrage. This episode provides a very authentic and organic look at how learning opportunities provided by a district, school or colleague can blossom into the most meaningful and culturally driven topics of conversation, resulting in real change in the community and greater society.  Here are a few links to articles that we used in teaching about Bilquis Abdul Qaadir:  https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/she-fought-to-give-hijabs-a-place-in-basketball-now-she-s-training-muslim-girls-in-london-ont-1.5779996 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/abdul-qaadir-basketball-denied-canadian-residency-1.6221404 A rich discussion with several a-ha! moments throughout! In Episode 92 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about bridging equity gaps in school communities over the past year and a half during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The past year has been a challenging one, and also has provided educators with many opportunities to bring students forward in terms of access to technology and providing specific professional development for teachers. Chey and Pav offer many insights with respect to their stance on this idea. What are some key takeaways from Episode 92? Don't slow down - keep looking for inequities. Don't take what Chey and Pav offer as the end of the conversation - keep the conversation going by reading more, and engaging in other conversations about bridging the equity gap. Also, let's stop saying "we need to go back to normal." The landscape has changed.  Chey and Pav refereed to a number of articles, which are linked here:  https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/public-and-social-sector/our-insights/covid-19-and-learning-loss-disparities-grow-and-students-need-help# https://www.hrw.org/report/2021/05/17/years-dont-wait-them/increased-inequalities-childrens-right-education-due-covid https://www.epi.org/blog/the-coronavirus-will-explode-achievement-gaps-in-education/ https://monitormag.ca/articles/ontarios-plan-for-education-hurts-the-most-marginalized-students A rich discussion with several a-ha! moments throughout!
