Description
Howdy, I’m Clayton Hansler. I’ve been working in film, television and sports for 15 years now - but you probably know me as either being that annoying AHL guy or the dude that created a soccer documentary series. I've befriended some of the most talented, smart, creative and funny people along the way and this podcast is a conversation between myself many of them... or some people that I'm meeting for the first time. The guests are usually people way more popular than me and their stories are pretty darn awesome. So I invite you to join in on the conversation for an hour each week, and don’t forget your earmuffs (the podcast isn’t always PG).

Casey Bannerman (caseybannerman.com) is on the phone to chat with Clay about creativity during COVID. We're all feeling the press, the question is how are we finding ways to release it? Casey is one of Toronto's preeminent sports designers having worked around the NBA with several players and teams, but has always kept a soft spot for the hometown Raptors team. The two discuss left over feelings following the Raps second round playoff exit, the outpouring of love for Pascal Siakam, and all those COVID catch phrases like 'unprecedented times' that we're sick of hearing. Joining Clay on the phone is Julie Stewart-Binks (Drinks With Binks) all the way from her teenage bedroom at her mom's place. When she's not writing and producing either of her two shows on FUBO TV, Julie likes to spend her time fighting COVID, documenting the construction outside her apartment window, and casually taking a Havard course in US politics. The two catch up and discuss Julie's appetite for knowledge and her continual growth and desire to push her own limits. This week's episode is brought to you by Guardrail and their new EP "Yikes!" Savanna Hamilton (NBA TV Canada) answers Clay's call and is happy to chat about how our attention has shifted from the pandemic to matters of social justice. Savanna had a really early start in the industry working on The Hangout, and then made the most of every opportunity both in front of and behind the camera. More recently, Sav has been part of a team at NBA TV Canada to keep the conversation around social justice in the spotlight during the NBA's return to play. Candice Kaye (Candice Kaye Design) joins Clay for a chat so the two can discuss creativity during isolation. Candice has helped design some of North America's top (and most photographed) restaurants and hotels and has used some of the recent down time to take to Instagram Live and teach free watercolour classes as she pulls back the curtain on some of her most well known textile and pattern designs. Join Candice's next class on March 28th in partnership with Dermalogica Canada. All classes are free to join, all you have to do is follow Canadice on instagram: @_candicekaye_ StringerLabs is teaming up with local and national charities to help connect our listeners directly to causes that we have a personal connection to and are in need of additional support through COVID-19. 100% of the proceeds from our limited edition shirts will go to help those who are helping Canada get through this :: https://stringer-labs.myshopify.com Follow @stringerpodcast on Twitter! Caroline Szwed (Sportsnet) is on the phone and she's happy to chat as long as she doesn't have to run a marathon (you'll have to listen to understand that reference). The two chat about discovering who your parents are as an adult, continuing to make an effort to do good things (big or small) to improve the lives of those around us, as well as the Hearts & Smiles t-shirt with all proceeds going to the Frontline Fund. We've got Nitzan Bluvstein (Count The Dings) on the line to chat about much more than just coffee. Nitz teamed up with Shivani to launch the Want Not Need Fund that helps distribute the donations from those who are willing to sacrifice a want for someone who is in need. Want Not Need has teamed up with five charities throughout North America to help address four basic pillars: economic relief, shelter, food and medical care. We've got Katie Heindl (Rolling Stone, Vice, Dime) on the phone to chat about finding her voice when writing. Katie and Clay go back and discuss adolescent journaling and the steps that were taken to become the writer she is today. The two also discuss the launch of Uhh, Basketball and how excited they both are for the new show and the many creative ideas in store for the future. On the phone is Sean Woodley (TSN Radio, Uhh Basketball) to chat about his latest podcast Uhh, Basketball? It's a lovely hour spent with Katie Heindl each week where the two discuss all things NBA and basketball culture. Sean opens up on making the jump from journalism school to 'new media,' being paid three dollars to write Raptors content, and co-authoring a book... in four days! Clay is joined on the phone by Matthew Scianitti (TSN) and the two of them reflect on the creative ups-and-downs presented by self isolation and the need to take care of ourselves before being overly concerned with our daily creative output. Matt shares the story of his last minute trip to Los Angeles after the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and opens up about the enormous responsibility of being embedded in any major event (and how scary it was his first time around).StringerLabs is teaming up with local and national charities to help connect our listeners directly to causes that we have a personal connection to and are in need of additional support through COVID-19. 100% of the proceeds from our limited edition shirts will go to help those who are helping Canada get through this :: https://stringer-labs.myshopify.com Follow @stringerpodcast on Twitter! Clay finally gets a chance to meet up in studio with Avry Lewis-McDougall of Avry Sports. The two discuss Avry’s beginnings as a sports media phenom, the challenges of starting a podcast in the early days of social media, and what it feels like to pee next to Kurt Warner. The two also talk about the importance of covering niche sports and exactly how cold the 2016 MLS Cup was, before ending with predictions about the NBA & NHL season, and MLS playoffs (the episode was recorded in October 2019). Sean Keay (Space Monkey) doesn't have to travel far to hop into the studio with Clay. The current Head of Development for Space Monkey chats about his early days at theScore, that time the app melted down during a World Cup draw, and the move to Toronto FC. You see, that's where Sean and Clay met. The two then chat about their first draft together, walking the line working for a team (and getting in trouble for things) and the pact they made if ever they were to leave MLSE. There's conversations about podcast creation, the digital world and trying to build a media company from the ground up before finishing with a now dated segment where they both make MLS Cup predictions. This episode was recorded on October 4th, 2019. Sean Fitz-Gerald (The Athletic) stops by the studio for a long overdue catchup session with Clay. The two discuss their history in hockey, Sean's move from the newspaper world onto the frontier of the digital news age, and how life in one breath couldn't be tougher and in the very next completely turned for the better. Sean's first book Before the Lights Go Out is available for purchase October 1st at Chapters/Indigo, on Amazon and the publisher Penguin Random House.
Camila Gonzalez (TLN) pops by the studio for the most enlightening conversation with Clay. She’s traveled the world as a journalist, she’s then traveled it again as a pageant winner, she’s quick with a joke, takes the edge of things with a smirk, and will outsmart you around every turn. She’s a Columbian born, football juggling, tv talking, trilingual journalistic beauty queen (in fact the second Miss Universe Canada competitor we’ve had on the podcast) and the only person Clay knows to have ever asked the Prime Minister to prove his feminism during an interview.
John Molinaro (Canadian Premier League) stops by the studio to chat with Clay about starting a call-in show, Canadian Premier League, Toronto FC's infamous championship season, and a five ingredient homemade pasta sauce that only takes 10 minutes.
Jeff Veillette (The Faceoff Circle) is in the studio and it doesn’t take long for Clay to bring up their very first hockey project (16:47), life on HF Boards (22:24) and how it seems James Mirtle really legitimized the way hockey bloggers were viewed by the mainstream media community (25:18). The two reminisce about Jeff’s first press pass (31:07), their time with Dallas Eakins (42:19) and Jeff’s love for the Atlanta Thrashers (58:35). Things turn serious at the end as the two open up about their individual struggles with self confidence (1:05:57) and how finding a sense of community continues to help with that (1:10:01).
Chris Clarke (MWO Sports) drops by the newly renovated but not quite completed studio to discuss the most important of issues; does Sidney Crosby swear (9:13). It doesn't take long for this long time radio vet to tell stories of a time before message boards (14:13), what the first days of Prime Time Sports with Bob McCowan were like (20:24), that time when George Steinbrenner called (48:41) and playing hockey against Brian Burke (57:35). But beware, it's also a cautionary tale of never meeting your heroes (01:07:06).
It’s a full house with Jerome Cheng (Count the Dings) in the studio and Kyle Perry as our guest co-host alongside Clay and Dylan. The guys are in to talk all things Marvel, but not before Clay and Jerome relive those early days together at TFC (10:08) and how Jerome first got linked with CTD (16:55). It’s then on to the good stuff as Jerome first pumps the Marvel Cinematic University podcast (37:44), Clay wants to break down Captain Marvel (43:44) and then the fearsome foursome dives into the MCU Big Move Bracket Challenge (1:00:34).Follow @stringerpodcast on Twitter.
