Description
In 1994, children in every school yard wanted to be a Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger. However, some may remember Power Rangers' rival series: the proto-vaporwave Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad. Starring a gaggle of young actors (and Tim Curry!!) Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad came up with increasingly absurd ways to destroy the world every week. In 2019 and beyond, two friends dive into the archives of this forgotten series, to see what weirdness can be found. Let's samurize, guys!!

We interview Malcom Frink himself. G opens up about his history with acting, his role on Pocahontas, his experiences shooting Samurai Squad, his current work, and the many ways his identity has helped to shape the most iconic character of 1990's television!! Special thanks to Jordan Olsen, who made all of this possible!! Yin and Peter's audio are a little rough, but this was a stratetic choice to give G the best possible quality. As always, thank you to Triforce Films for permitting use of his Saturday Morning Acapella cover of the Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad theme. Wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh!! We read another book today! We read Maureen F. McHugh's 1992 Science Fiction classic, China Mountain Zhang. It's good!! We're 1/2 on novels now. Before launching into the book proper, we talk about Asian-American literature, #ownvoices, and the adaptation of Hooooowl's Moving Caaaaaaastleeeeeeee. The theme song is another poopy Lady Gaga cover by yours truly. ;* Find us at www.supersamuraipod.libsyn.com and @Syberpod on Twitter!! Email us at Supersamuraipod@gmail.com!!
Joe joins us this week for a Samurai New Year!! We talk about skiing, kotatsu, Japanese pronoun choice, translation NDAs, and the most dread Yokai: THE AMABIE. Then we watched a pretty goshdarn weird episode. It promises a "Mrs. Starkey Acts!!" episode, and instead we get... Jennifer's worst date ever. How bad does the date go? Well, you'll just have to listen to find out. Let's just say that Sam Collins is a supervillain in his own right. Merry Chrimbus everyone!! We here at the Syber Pod hope that you all are having a wonderful holiday season. Olivia returns for... not a Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad Christmas special, but a Power Rangers one!! This was a VHS tape Saban sold back in 1994 (and owned by a certain co-host.) After a discussion on the current state of Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy, we talk about Daddy of Light, yaoi Great Gatsby, alien robot Christianity, and Haim Saban's QUESTIONABLE ETHICSSSSSS.
This week we are joined by Emilio Diaz, a host of the film festival podcast Cannes I Kick It!! We talk about hot dogs, TIME FORCE TIME FORCE, hydrochloric acid, ancient mariners, sleeping in class, and sleeping during ACADEMY AWARD WINNING MOTION PICTURES. This episode is what is colloquially known as a "corker." Get excited boyas and gyarus!! Jordan Olsen returns for a great episode about "the Canadian Kappa Mikey." What if you blended Hot Topic, Borders, and Deviantart into a single teen sitcom?? We find out the hard way! It's MY LIFE ME!! In Japanese that's probably like... [Jibun no Inochi Watashi] right? Side note: I had to cut out over half an hour where I recount the best ways to game the Academic Decathalon. Don't scheme for those gold medals, kids! Theme song is by myself this time! Since Summer is finally winding down, Yin and I will be able to soon return to the grind of regular Syber Pod episodes.
Hallo! WE have friend of the pod Noah Bianchi on to talk about a new episode. I think we are like... exactly one third through the series now!! Anyway, we cover such diverse topics as college film projects, the demons of Solomon, and JK Rowling's mediocre writing. Thank you to Triforce Films, creator of Saturday Morning Acapella, for letting us use his Superhuman Samurai Squad cover as our theme!! Hello everyone! It's been a hot minute. We have a lot of new content in the pipeline, with a new "regular" episode coming out within the next few days. However, this is no regular episode... It's a GAIDEN for ENTER THE WARRIOR'S GATE!! That is to say, the French-Chinese attempt at making a international crossover hit. It made... no money, helping to bankrupt Luc Besson's Europacorp. He's a pretty bad person so we don't feel bad. We also talk about the only two redeeming parts of the film: Dave Batista as the lead villain, and weirdo 90's bully TRAVIS. I guess I covered yet another Lady Gaga song huh
We (finally) cover the next couple of episodes of the anime SSSS Gridman, nearly a year after we last talked about it! In one of the podcast's weirdest twists, we stay almost entirely on topic throughout the entire thing! We talk about college boys, whitewater rafting, and EATING TOAST WITH A BANE MASK ON. Yin also learned what Enjo Kosai was, so that's SOMETHING. The song this week is the SSSS Gridman theme!!!!!
We're back to Samurai Syber Squad! After the requisite coronavirus talk, we catch up on the month of April: Tiger King, fighting anime, and Yin's dating life!!?!?! Then for today's episode we talk about RUBBER UNDERWEAR!! RUBBER UNDERWEAR!! RUBBER UNDERWEAR AUUUUGHGHGHGH!! Thank you to Triforce Films, creator of Saturday Morning Acapella, for letting us use his Superhuman Samurai Squad cover as our theme!! Watch his content at https://www.youtube.com/user/Triforcefilms. His songs are SO GOOD!! Find us at www.supersamuraipod.libsyn.com and @Syberpod on Twitter!! Email us at Supersamuraipod@gmail.com!!
We have Marquita on the pod, who has been working as a English teacher in Seoul for the past 5 years! We talk to her about bad students, the burgeoning virus (this was recorded 3 weeks ago lol) and about Korean dating profiles! The theme song is an Italodisco track by Scotch called "Disco Band." It was a favorite in high school, because of its nonsensical use of coughing as the backtrack.
Isn't that a great title? It isn't? SHUT UP!! YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!! Anyway it was St. Valentime's Day and the one year anniversary and Peter's girlfriendo has been getting into GIRLY ANIME so Peter and Yin talked about GIRLY ANIME for an hour. They hone in on one of the most bizarre romance series ever created: BROTHERS CONFLICT!! Can you guess how many brothers there are? Can you guess how many DAYS YIN HAS ON HER MYANIMELIST!?!??!!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!? Uhhh I totally ripped the Brothers Conflict theme as our song this week uguuuuuu
Today (by which I mean 'snowy day in late December') we talked about the later two thirds of The Poppy War. Rin joins the military, and stake rise as Mugen's war machine becomes more devious and dangerous. And then... Nanking happens. Well, it happened off screen, thousands of miles away, and is related to Rin weeks after the fact. Welp. Also the last 50 pages of this book are COMPLETELY UNHINGED. I was going to include the theme song from the Christian Bale Nanking film "The Flowers of War" as our intro, but in a rare moment of insight I realized that might be tacky. Instead, our opener and closer is "Rising Tensions" by Emily from "Rollforfantasy.com". She makes wonderful fantasy music for tabletop campaigns and other worlds. Her music channel is one of my favorites on Youtube, PLEASE check her out. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG46uU4jlxak8DvmcVqN2oQ
So here's part one of our mega-episode on RF Kuang's fantasy novel *The Poppy War*. When a young girl enters her nation's most prestigious academy, will she be able to escape her destitute past to make a name for herself? What if she learned MARTIAL ARTS and DID DRUGS?? This novel interpolates famous sequences from Chinese history into an fantasy setting, most notably... The Rape of Nanking. Yeah. We give some historical context about the atrocity, as well as the book as a whole, before diving into Part 1 of the novel. Despite how heavy it gets later, the beginning is mostly about calling people douchebaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaags and finding out about periods... a decade after everyone else did. I was going to include the theme song from the Christian Bale Nanking film "The Flowers of War" as our intro, but in a rare moment of insight I realized that might be tacky. Whoomp!! There it is!! We are back for the New Year! We discuss the most pressing television of 2019 (Fruits Basket, obviously) before diving into a new episode where Sam *finally* gets a break. Does he deserve a break, though? Well, somebody needs to be there for Jennifer. Maybe Amp truly is the right guy for the job. On today's episode we power through some B U Z Z I N G to have a great discussion about a not so great episode! We talk about Jordan's childhood growing up in Japan, as well as befriending a famou tokusatsu actor as an adult. Then, to avoid talking about the episode, we discussed Meet the Robinsons for 10 minutes. #Noregrets Thank you to Triforce Films, creator of Saturday Morning Acapella, for letting us use his Superhuman Samurai Squad cover as our theme!! Peter and Alex try a side pod, without Yin's stabilizing presence. It goes... BUCKWILD!! Hope you like Star Wars episode I jokes. The highlight of the episode (since we talked about everything under the sun *except* Kappa Mikey) is the reveal of two masochistic middle school games, both heavily influenced by nerd culture: "Wounded" and... "MIDO'S REVENGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Thank you to Triforce Films, creator of Saturday Morning Acapella, for letting us use his Superhuman Samurai Squad cover as our theme!! We have our first expatriate on the show! Chris teaches English in Hokkaido, Japan. He shares with us lots of great information about what working in living in the frozen north is like. Also, he was *literally* in the middle of a typhoon, leading to a teeny bit of distortion. We then watched one of the craziest episodes yet. ELECTRIC POMS POMS AAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!
