I think the whole convergence experiment was great fun - and we’ve taken it a long way - but it has arguably has culminated in a “Jack of all trades/master of none” peak, where the separate components are prevented from reaching their full potential, or doing things that might improve their individual capabilities, if doing so doesn’t compliment the vision of the converged device. If you are right, and we start to focus more on standalone products, I think it can only be a good thing - and certainly more fun for the tech community!   Banters: Knocking out a Quick Bant Image viewer for Windows: Irfanview (Ted) ImageGlass (Gareth) Google News Delayed Stories News, Mews and Views Reddit is now a publicly traded company Compact cameras are making a comeback as demand for Nikon Coolpix soars by over 8,000% Gen Z Are Ditching the Camera App and Using Vintage Digital Cameras Instead  Three UK Sees Average Mobile Data Usage Per User Hit 30GB X is working on NSFW Communities for adult content Hardline on the hardware Everything Microsoft announced at its March Surface event Windows AI PC manufacturers must add a Copilot key, says Microsoft KeysMe Mars 03 Wireless Custom Mechanical Keyboard Yaw Motion Simulator  Edifier QR65 Desktop Active Monitor Speakers debut with LDAC and extra TurboGaN fast-charging feature £299? Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon host a St. Patrick's Day Tech Addicts podcast discussing Voyager 1's latest "poke" from NASA and its minimal computer capacity. They talk about LocalSend, a cross-platform file-sharing tool, and consider diving into Linux. The episode also covers a range of tech topics from Samsung's new phones, a potential TikTok ban, to the latest in wearables and AI advancements. To be sure. With Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon Join us on Mewe RSS Link: https://techaddicts.libsyn.com/rss iTunes | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | Tunein | Spotify  Amazon | Pocket Casts | Castbox | PodHubUK Feedback, Fallout and Contributions AJ Santos on Voyager 1 Latest The Nasa team recently sent a "poke" to prompt V1's flight data system (FDS) and received a signal that differed from past attempts. A DSN engineer helped decode this signal, which may contain clues to the source of the issue. There is hope! The computers aboard the Voyager probes each have 69.63 kilobytes of memory, total. That’s about enough to store one average internet jpeg file. The probes’ scientific data is encoded on old-fashioned digital 8-track tape machines. Once it's been transmitted to Earth, the spacecraft have to write over old data in order to have enough room for new observations. The Voyager machines are capable of executing about 81,000 instructions per second. The smartphone that is likely sitting in your pocket is probably about 7,500 times faster than that. They transmit their data back to Earth at 160 bits per second. A slow dial-up connection can deliver at least 20,000 bits per second. …and Kurt Kaufman on NASA Restores Communication with Ailing Voyager 1 (but it can’t live forever)! ------------------- Ian Barton on LocalSend (14-minute YouTube Video) A Cross-Platform, Open Source Alternative to AirDrop and Quick Share. I have a lot of books on Audible. I would like to download them in a format that is decrypted in case Audible goes "Mammaries skywards" in the future, or is taken over by another company that demands you pay for all your books again. I came across a free program called Libation. You can view it on GitHub and it can be installed on most operating systems. It has all sorts of filtering options and will download a postage stamp size icon. Note you can only download books that you have purchased from Audible. -------------- AJ Santos on What’s Going On With Voyager 1? Future Looks Uncertain Voyager 1 is the furthest any human object has ever gone from Earth. It is now over 15 billion miles from our planet, flying through interstellar space. Since its launch in August 1977, the spacecraft has remained in contact with Earth, but over the last several months, that communication has become nonsensical. My Chromebox is 16GB but when I started monitoring memory usage (using diagnostics) I never saw a point when I was using more than 8GB - this is since Google optimised Chrome and Chrome OS with recent updates. In the end I bought the i5 8GB Acer 516GE and it is highly recommended as a great all-rounder with a fab 16" screen in a virtually 15" and light, too. The only downside is battery life where I tend to get around 6 hours compared to 10 or more on other Chromebooks - the price you pay for the spec I guess. £849 from Acer News, Mews and Views Bad news for BitLocker users — its encryption can be cracked remarkable easily Spiral-shaped lens provides clear vision at a range of distances and lighting conditions 31 year old sea-floor generator tech will soon begin commercial operation Microsoft is killing off Publisher in 2026 Hardline on the hardware Samsung will re-release the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite tablet in 2024 - Official site Acer Chromebox Mini debuts as a fanless mini PC with ChromeOS New Chromebook ‘Xol’ emerges with an Assistant Key built in Easy-to-Repair Knockoff of Original iPod is Crowdfunding Smash The Wearables Watch Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro global pricing revealed ahead of launch Moto Watch 40 announced Phone Zone The first leaked Google Pixel Fold 2 image shows an extra camera and a new design HMD Global confirms there will be new Nokia phones You'll be able to use your Samsung Galaxy phone as your PC's webcam from March The Name of the Game Microsoft Store now lets you instantly try games without downloading them Microsoft is considering launching a number of Xbox-exclusive games on PlayStation - Starfield and Indy are NOT coming to PS5 Flap your trap about an App Microsoft's CCleaner-like PC Manager for Windows 10 and 11 is now widely available via the Store Microsoft's brand new PC Manager could actually slow down your PC Copilot will soon explain what you're reading in Notepad Audacity gets AI transcription and noise suppression courtesy of Intel OpenVINO plug-ins This fantastic File Explorer alternative now has its own list view YouTube's new Shorts feature is a direct attack on TikTok OpenAI’s new Sora text-to-video model can make shockingly realistic content - Marques Brownlee’s 12 Minute YouTube Video Google Gallows & Chrome Coroner Google Chrome's Android-like media player is just about ready Google One now has more than 100 million subscribers Google's Reading Mode app now works in Gmail and social media apps Hate replying to emails? I can report that the A8 is excellent for all of these on its clear and bright 10.5" LCD screen. Audio quality is very good on its four Dolby Atmos speakers. There's no booming bass but it's definitely loud enough when watching music and concert videos and there’s a 3.5mm jack. Battery is pretty decent, 7040mAh. I could go a whole week with light use. 64GB I've filled already but there is an SD card slot. My gaming is mostly puzzles so I'm not pushing the graphics capabilities of its Unisoc Tiger T618 (12nm) Octa-core processor. Build quality has proved to be good so far. It's been in a folding case since day one. But even naked, its 508g 6.9 mm thick body feels very sturdy in the hand. The back does warm up a bit during a long video viewing session but no real problem. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and at under £170. I would highly recommend this tablet for everyday use. You're getting a whole lot of tablet for a budget price. Tech Addicts Review ------------------ Xerxes Hodivala on Samsung Store at Kings Cross It’s a beautiful space with all their current products on display. I had to get my Fold 4 repaired under warranty. The S-Pen digitiser had failed on each side of the crease. They are going to replace the digitiser, inner screen, metal frame, hinge and both batteries as part of the service. It will basically be a new device when I get it back. The experience was first rate, as good as customer service at an Apple Store. This was actually the reason why I decided on a Samsung rather than a Pixel or OnePlus for my first folding device. I wanted something that I could take to a physical shop for repair if needed. Wonder The (re)learning curve has been executed brilliantly well to get back up to scratch with functions. It's very pretty but very childish. The enforced 5 minutes at the start is annoying having to wait and read and watch all the clap-trap before you get to actually play at all. The constant text pop-ups are annoying too. Hopefully they go away in time and as you get further in. The gameplay though is super. I got through the first castle now. The controller is a bit annoying using the Switch Lite as the right raised joystick thingie is in the way of my thumb hitting multiple buttons on A, B, X, Y like I used to on the SNES controller. Overall though it's fabulous, fun and 2D nostalgic. A masterstroke by Nintendo. I think this will sell huge for xmas, especially for Japanese kids.   Jeremy Harpham on Google Chromebook Update Extension This was mentioned on a recent Tech Addicts podcast, that Google was extending support of various Chromebooks with up to 10 years of Chrome OS updates.
