A couple of months ago the motherboard died. I wanted to record TV directly to one of my UNRAID servers up in the attic. Unfortunately, there are no TV aerial coax connections in the attic. I decided to buy this box. You can plug the HDHomeRun into your aerial in the lounge and use the other aerial connector to plug directly into the TV. The HD Homerun has an ethernet port so I can connect to another box somewhere on the network. Using Emby I can connect directly to the box to watch live TV. Emby on my UNRAID server supports HDHomeRun, so I can record TV programs using the schedule from the HDHomerun. I can watch Emby recordings from anywhere else on the planet that has WiFi and decent Internet access. HDHomeRun app on both Android and iOS that allows you to record programs and watch the recordings. Steve Litchfield on Why you (probably) don’t need a VPN You're absolutely safe without a VPN. Every Internet-facing application accesses data over an already-secure connection. There's nothing bad guys could do even if they were to somehow intercept random batches of your over-the-air 1s and 0s. VPNs are OTT security. It will make activity significantly slower, because of extra encryption - pages will take longer to load, videos will buffer more. You just don't need a VPN. You really don't. Even in a dodgy cybercafe in Turkey. Your own encryption, built into your OS and applications, is quite enough. One caveat to all this - VPN's ability to fake where you are in the world to a service that you're accessing. Which is borderline illegal, or at least against terms of service of whichever service you're accessing. But so what? Save your money! I think the whole convergence experiment was great fun - and we’ve taken it a long way - but it has arguably has culminated in a “Jack of all trades/master of none” peak, where the separate components are prevented from reaching their full potential, or doing things that might improve their individual capabilities, if doing so doesn’t compliment the vision of the converged device. If you are right, and we start to focus more on standalone products, I think it can only be a good thing - and certainly more fun for the tech community! Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon host a St. Patrick's Day Tech Addicts podcast discussing Voyager 1's latest "poke" from NASA and its minimal computer capacity. They talk about LocalSend, a cross-platform file-sharing tool, and consider diving into Linux. The episode also covers a range of tech topics from Samsung's new phones, a potential TikTok ban, to the latest in wearables and AI advancements. To be sure. With Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon Join us on Mewe RSS Link: https://techaddicts.libsyn.com/rss iTunes | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | Tunein | Spotify Amazon | Pocket Casts | Castbox | PodHubUK Feedback, Fallout and Contributions AJ Santos on Voyager 1 Latest The Nasa team recently sent a "poke" to prompt V1's flight data system (FDS) and received a signal that differed from past attempts. A DSN engineer helped decode this signal, which may contain clues to the source of the issue. There is hope! The computers aboard the Voyager probes each have 69.63 kilobytes of memory, total. That’s about enough to store one average internet jpeg file. The probes’ scientific data is encoded on old-fashioned digital 8-track tape machines. Once it's been transmitted to Earth, the spacecraft have to write over old data in order to have enough room for new observations. The Voyager machines are capable of executing about 81,000 instructions per second. The smartphone that is likely sitting in your pocket is probably about 7,500 times faster than that. They transmit their data back to Earth at 160 bits per second. A slow dial-up connection can deliver at least 20,000 bits per second. …and Kurt Kaufman on NASA Restores Communication with Ailing Voyager 1 (but it can’t live forever)! ------------------- Ian Barton on LocalSend (14-minute YouTube Video) A Cross-Platform, Open Source Alternative to AirDrop and Quick Share. I came across a free program called Libation. You can view it on GitHub and it can be installed on most operating systems. It has all sorts of filtering options and will download a postage stamp size icon. Note you can only download books that you have purchased from Audible. -------------- AJ Santos on What’s Going On With Voyager 1? I can report that the A8 is excellent for all of these on its clear and bright 10.5" LCD screen. Audio quality is very good on its four Dolby Atmos speakers. There's no booming bass but it's definitely loud enough when watching music and concert videos and there’s a 3.5mm jack. Battery is pretty decent, 7040mAh. I could go a whole week with light use. 64GB I've filled already but there is an SD card slot. My gaming is mostly puzzles so I'm not pushing the graphics capabilities of its Unisoc Tiger T618 (12nm) Octa-core processor. Build quality has proved to be good so far. It's been in a folding case since day one. But even naked, its 508g 6.9 mm thick body feels very sturdy in the hand. The back does warm up a bit during a long video viewing session but no real problem. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and at under £170. I would highly recommend this tablet for everyday use. You're getting a whole lot of tablet for a budget price. Tech Addicts Review ------------------ Xerxes Hodivala on Samsung Store at Kings Cross It’s a beautiful space with all their current products on display. I had to get my Fold 4 repaired under warranty. The S-Pen digitiser had failed on each side of the crease. They are going to replace the digitiser, inner screen, metal frame, hinge and both batteries as part of the service. It will basically be a new device when I get it back. The experience was first rate, as good as customer service at an Apple Store. This was actually the reason why I decided on a Samsung rather than a Pixel or OnePlus for my first folding device. I wanted something that I could take to a physical shop for repair if needed.
