The Tree Farm. We've given this one plenty of love in comparisons to other courses, but have yet to talk about it purely as its own review. Today that changes. Henry will be breaking down what he likes about it, and how he thinks the course will develop over time. In today's episode, you can expect: - Where The Tree Farm sits relative to other course's Henry likes. - The strengths and weaknesses of the course. - How Henry projects The Tree Farm will develop over time as a course as well as within the rankings. Hope you all enjoy this conversation.  Thanks for the support as always!  Cheers,  - The Tie Guys Website: https://www.thetiepodcast.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetiepodcast/?hl=en  Twitter: https://mobile.twitter.com/thetiepodcast GoodWalk Coffee: https://goodwalkcoffee.com  CODE: thetie for 20% off  BDraddy: bdraddy.com  CODE: thetie25 for 25% off
Regionals, the final right of passage regardless of who you are. Whether we are talking about a team that has 9 wins on the year or a team that barely snuck into the top 75, everyone has to go to one of the 6 regional sites and finish in the top 5 if they want to make a trip to the national championship. Brentley Romine is here with us a one of the top voices and knowledge bases in the college golf world to break down the season that has led us here, each of the 6 regionals, and plenty of color on what to expect. In today's episode, you can expect: - Who is going where and what is the importance of location. - Who will definitely be at the National Championship, who has a chance to make it, and what can we expect from the individual race at each location? - Why is it that this is the most nervy event of the year whether you are the 1 seed or the 14 seed at any regional. Jackson Van Paris is a junior on the Vanderbilt Men's Golf Team and has been enjoying a ton of success in the last year. Climbing into the top 15 of the amateur ranks haas been a product of a win at the 2023 Sunnehanna Amateur, a top 10 in a PGA Tour event, and a lot of great golf along the way. While this may look like a huge shift, JVP has been getting the better the whole way through, a lot of which he credits to Vanderbilt coach Scott Limbaugh, as well as his roommate, Gordon Sargent. In today's episode, you can expect: - How Jackson has used Gordon as an example rather than a weight by comparison. - The culture of Vanderbilt Men's Golf and how Scott Limbaugh coaches them. - His plans post graduation and what he loves about competitive golf. Most of us have one or both of the 2 key problems when it comes to practice: finding time to practice, and knowing how to use that time when we do find it. While we unfortunately cannot be of assistance in opening up time in your schedule to hit the range, short game area, or putting green, we can give you a boost when it comes to putting that precious time to its best use. Tune in to find out how! In today's episode, you can expect: - How we structure our limited time to practice. - The difference between fundamental, structured, and creative practice. - How to balance the 3 types of practice based on your skill level and ability to practice the game. Golf, like anything has a lifecycle to it. You learn the game, you spend a long long time honing the game, and as an extension of that, you hopefully play the game for life. While you wouldn't play the same set of clubs your entire golfing life, you probably won't stick to the same course either. There are certain "beginner friendly" courses that may be particularly good for learning the game. Certain places really help a developing or perhaps advanced golfer hone their game, and certain courses are well cut out to play for a lifetime. In today's episode, you can expect: - Background on what makes for a course in each bucket. - The importance of this "architectural lifecycle" for a golfer. - Our picks in each of these 3 buckets. The Masters got us all fired up for major season, so naturally we are priming you for the next one up, The PGA in 4 weeks. Valhalla golf club has a storied championship history and although it is not the most interesting golf course out there, you can't deny the quality of champions it has produced. In today's episode, you can expect: - Talk about the golf course and what sort of players it favors. - The history of championships at Valhalla and what that gleans on the year's event. - Who we like heading into the PGA. What. A. Week. From the players, the weather, the typical culture of The Masters, and the golf course, it was as good of a Masters Tournament as I can recall. It's Masters week! Truly the best week of the year in so many ways and of course we are doing another #mudballmonday on The Masters. Today we're breaking down some of our scenarios that we think are possible yet not super likely that we think would make this week even better than it already trusts to be! The Main things you can expect today are: - Some of the things we are most excited for at the Masters this year. - 6 "What ifs?" for this year's Masters Tournament and the repercussions of each. - The reasons why we think this Masters has the chance to be as good as any we've seen in some time. Kyle Franz has been doing great renovation and restoration work for a number of years now and, as he describes it in today's conversation, feels like he is just now getting his "big break" on exciting original works. Although it wasn't original, his reworking of Cabot Citrus Farms (formerly World Woods) feels like our first chance to see what Kyle's true original work will look like, and if it is ant indication, we are in for some fun! In today's conversation, Kyle and Henry discuss: - Kyle's inspiration for his work (The Old Course) - Where architecture has perhaps gone wrong and how he wants to help in the industry's course correction - How he feels about Cabot Citrus so far and what we can expect from some of his original projects that will be opening in the next 12 months. Two of the great parts of The Masters are the inclusion of the Amateurs as well as past champions in the field. It gives the field texture, half of which being new excitement and half of which being a consistency of players we have seen for years, whether they have any chance of playing well or not. Today we discuss how the old heads stack up against the young guys not playing for a check and who may have the upper hand based on this exact crop of guys as well as what history would tell us to expect from each category. The Main things you can expect today are: - Who is in the amateur and past champion field? - How will each player perform? - Which cohort do we give the upper hand to? If you were playing competitive golf at my age, you knew who Rachel Heck was. She made it look easy- always has. Despite wrestling mind, body, and soul the last few years, she came back a few weeks ago ready to play. Her freshman season accolades alone fill up a page, and her appearances for professional and team events only brightened the lights. We forget that the people playing at the highest level have to make a choice – is this… it? Is this what I am going to dedicate my life to? Wright Thompson was a memorable guest on The Tie. Wright authored: “The Cost of These Dreams” - a book with a self explanatory title and some cold hard truth on sacrifice. Sometimes there are people who can recognize a trade from good to great before anyone else does. When I think of Rachel’s story I think letting go of pro golf is “the cost of these dreams”. She’s got a goal - golf is part of it, but only a part. Rachel will be right at home in the discomfort that awaits her after graduation. After all, she has chosen to put herself in the uncomfortable, pressurized environments time after time throughout her life. How her relationship with the game evolves will be a fun journey. No doubt, we will be seeing more darts and bombs from her on the amateur side. We hope you all enjoy today's episode! Round 2 of our MBM pre Masters series! This time we're talking about who CAN as well as who CAN'T win The Masters this year. A lot to think through these days on who our real hitters are as we get to these majors given all the complexity in the golf world. The majors have been made that much more special by the fact that we only get to see the game's best players together a handful of times these days. Today we talk about: - 2 players who will not be winning the jacket. - 8 players who could win the green jacket. - The DERT, our expectations for Cat, and more! Mike McGraw has spent his entire life as a teacher, mentor, and coach. Starting out in Edmond, OK as a high school teacher and golf coach at the age of 25, moving on to be the assistant at Oklahoma State for a number of years, spending 8 years as the head of the Cowboys, and now as the head at Baylor.  Coach McGraw, as you'll learn in this episode, has as much passion for coaching as anyone I know. He has dedicated his life to making others better whether that is in the classroom, as a golfer, or most importantly as a person. I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with Mike and trust you all will enjoy hearing him as well. This is a good one to share with anyone younger in your life as Mike has a lot of wisdom for how young people should go about navigating their life. Conditions matter, let's be honest. We all enjoy playing a very well conditioned golf course but the importance of conditioning goes far beyond the enjoyment of "aesthetics." Conditions affect the way a golf course plays and how we can and should go about trying to navigate it as golfers. Further, the way different parts of the country and world are conditioned at their best and in different times of the year is an interesting thing to think through. In today's conversation we cover:- How conditioning and design intermingle.- Where conditions are best based on time of year.- Some of the best meetings of conditioning and design we know of.Hope you all enjoy this conversation. Thanks for the support as always!Cheers,- The Tie GuysWebsite:https://www.thetiepodcast.comInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/thetiepodcast/?hl=enTwitter:https://mobile.twitter.com/thetiepodcastGoodWalk Coffee:https://goodwalkcoffee.comCODE: thetie for 20% offBDraddy:bdraddy.comCODE: thetie25 for 25% off
