Many students in the arts limit their professional prospects to performing.  In this show, we talk about the many other professions available that not only require a working knowledge of the arts, but tap into business, marketing, event planning, education, and numerous other talents.  Dan Barris, Executive Director of Dancers. Inc. offers another side of being a working artist. “Executive Director, Dan Barris, and a talented team of professionals joined forces almost a decade ago with the purpose of motivating dancers. With over 50 years of professional performing experience nationally, regionally and locally, they have taken their passion for dance to the competition and convention format.” “Our mission is to provide the most personal and professional of services while creating a safe and constructive learning environment for your dance students. We pride ourselves in offering on-time, efficient competitions and full day dance conventions focusing on education and learning for a truly meaningful dance experience.” Dancers Inc. offers experiences beyond the competition and convention including Dancers Responding to AIDS, Camp Broadway, Teacher’s Round Table Discussions, and so much more. Listen and Share the second installment in my podcast series dedicated to those who would like to pursue a career in the arts.  Experts offer their advice regarding preparation and decision making for students considering this path. In this episode, we talk with Deborah Engerman, Director of the Classical Ballet Program at Dancemoves Dance Studio.  She has recently toured Europe as Ballet Mistress with Rasta Thomas' Bad Boys of Dance and has now returned home to the USA, teaching in MD and PA.  She trained with the Baltimore Ballet in the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) tradition, passing her graded exams. While pursuing her degree in International Policy at Dickinson College, she continued her study of classical ballet at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. Her dance training also includes Vaganova Technique, French Methodology, and the Dance Education Program at Towson University.  Dancers trained by Mrs. Engerman have danced with Universal Ballet, The Washington Ballet, Ballet West, The Vienna Opera Ballet, the Boston Ballet, Complexions Dance Company, The Mark Morris Dance Group, and on Broadway. She has also been a coach to dancers winning at numerous international ballet competitions, such as The Prix de Lausanne, the Varna IBC, and The Youth America Grand Prix. One of her students, Adrienne Canterna, took the Junior Gold Medal at the 1998 Jackson USA International Ballet Competition.
As a dancer since the age of three who competed during High School, studied modern and ballet through college, and became a teacher and coach; I have had a fantastic career in the arts.  Every year I am approached by students asking how they can pursue dance after high school.  What are the career opportunities?  How do you prepare? Do you go to college?  How difficult is it? Through a series of podcasts with industry professionals we will answer these questions and more. In this episode, we talk with Bob Marks, professional vocal coach.   "Preparing performers for auditions and performances is something I take seriously. For three decades I've devoted my professional life to providing the support and guidance that this business requires." "As a vocal coach, music arranger, accompanist, conductor, and Music Director, I’ve been helping singers prepare their songs for performances on stage and at auditions." Listen and share this informative podcast with industry expert, Bob Marks!
