Bad customers don't just cost money, they cost margin, morale, and headspace. Most trades business owners have never done the maths on it.  Every customer carries a real cost beyond the invoice: rework, chased payments, unrealistic site visits, and discounts handed out just to keep the peace. Revenue looks fine on paper, but gross margin tells the real story, and it's the number too many owners ignore. Bad clients don't just drain profit either, they drain the crew, wearing down morale until good staff start walking.  The fix isn't emotional, it's a simple four-question test: do they pay on time, respect the price, respect the team, and would you take them on again knowing what you know now? From there, firing a customer properly means no texts, no burned bridges, and no abrupt exits. Prune the client base gradually, and build toward the customers actually worth keeping. In this episode you’ll learn:  🔨 Bad customers cost more in rework than they bring in revenue. 🔨 Chasing payments and unpaid site visits quietly erode real profit. 🔨 Nightmare clients damage team morale and drive good staff away. 🔨 A four-question test reveals which customers are worth keeping long term. 🔨 Reset terms and pricing upfront to filter out poor-fit customers. 🔨 Prune your customer base gradually, never purge it all at once.  … Book a free Discovery Call to start your journey toward building a sustainable business and balanced life: www.strategysession.com.au  Find out more about Pravar Group at www.pravargroup.com or https://www.instagram.com/pravargroup See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Promoting the best tradesperson into management feels obvious. It's usually the costliest mistake a growing trades business makes.  Loyalty, fear and convenience drive most promotion decisions, not strategy. The longest-serving tradie gets the nod because owners feel obligated, want a retention win, or need to justify a pay rise. What follows is predictable: the business loses its most profitable person off the tools, then gains an undertrained, overwhelmed manager who defaults to doing the job themselves rather than leading a team.  The fix isn't complicated, but it is disciplined. Define the role and its responsibilities before naming a person. Look for planning, communication and coordination skills, not just trade mastery. Train and support whoever steps up for the long haul it actually takes. Position first, person second. Skip that order, and even a well-intentioned process can still cost you both the tradesman and the manager.  In this episode you’ll learn:  🔨 Owners promote out of loyalty, fear, or convenience rather than strategic thinking. 🔨 Losing your top tradie off the tools creates a real financial hit. 🔨 A poorly prepared manager often reverts to doing the job themselves. 🔨 Building management skills properly takes twelve to eighteen months, not days. 🔨 Define the role and responsibilities before deciding who should fill it. 🔨 Position first, person second prevents the most costly promotion mistakes possible.  … Book a free Discovery Call to start your journey toward building a sustainable business and balanced life: www.strategysession.com.au  Find out more about Pravar Group at www.pravargroup.com or https://www.instagram.com/pravargroup See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"Nobody wants to work anymore" is the laziest excuse in trades, and it's time to retire it. The real problem isn't a labour shortage, it's a leadership shortage dressed up as one. Good people exist, and they're already working, just not for those businesses that are running on chaos, low standards, and stale culture.  The fix isn't a bigger pay check. It's clarity about where the business is headed, real growth paths, genuine respect, room to contribute, and training that actually develops people instead of just filling hours. Even in the tightest markets, businesses that get this right stop struggling to find people and start becoming the place people choose to stay.  Stop blaming the workforce. Start looking in the mirror.  In this episode you’ll learn:  🔨 Most staffing problems are actually leadership problems wearing a disguise. 🔨 Good tradespeople exist and are already working somewhere else entirely. 🔨 People choose employers now, they don't settle for bad ones. 🔨 Growth opportunities matter more than most business owners ever realise. 🔨 Respect and honest communication build loyalty money simply cannot buy. 🔨 Training people well means they stay, not that they leave.  … Book a free Discovery Call to start your journey toward building a sustainable business and balanced life: www.strategysession.com.au  Find out more about Pravar Group at www.pravargroup.com or https://www.instagram.com/pravargroup See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Growth is the tradie instinct: when things get hard, work harder, do more. But that's exactly the wrong move for a broken business. Scaling doesn't fix problems, it multiplies them.  Chasing the next job to pay for the last one feels like progress, but it's just masking a margin problem with more noise. The real fix isn't sexier sales or bigger crews, it's pricing properly, tightening scheduling, and getting brutally honest about the numbers already sitting in the business. Bigger isn't the fix. Better is. Get the foundations right first, because a business that's broken at one size will only break harder at the next. In this episode you’ll learn:  🔨 Scaling doesn't fix problems, it multiplies them, the good and the bad. 🔨 Working harder on a broken business only deepens the cracks already forming. 🔨 Revenue can rise while profit stays flat, or even quietly slides backward. 🔨 More sales won't fix margin issues, only better management and pricing will. 🔨 Back costing completed jobs reveals exactly where the real money is leaking. 🔨 Fix the foundations first, because bigger only multiplies whatever's already broken.  … Book a free Discovery Call to start your journey toward building a sustainable business and balanced life: www.strategysession.com.au  Find out more about Pravar Group at www.pravargroup.com or https://www.instagram.com/pravargroup See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Two communities, one incredible event. This episode takes you inside Pravar's 2026 Annual Conference & Awards in Port Douglas, where our Lifestyle and Legacy clients came together for the first time ever to celebrate the 2026 Financial Year.  If you missed it, consider this your front-row seat. We're unpacking the wins, the awards, the conversations that set the tone for the whole event, plus a few unforgettable moments: fire-lit dinners deep in the rainforest, traditional indigenous performance, and a boat trip to the reef that got a little more adventurous than planned.   At the end of the day, this isn't just a night of trophies. It's a chance to pause, celebrate how far everyone's come, and reset for what's next.   Four awards were handed out this year:  👉 The Bevan Award (our nod to consistency and habits) went to Jake Mohr of Powermate. Over the past 12 months he's brought his business and personal life into real alignment, building strong health habits and showing up more fully as a husband and dad while his business kept climbing.  👉 The Transformation Award went to Danny Hipwell of Bendigo Building Repairs, now affectionately known in the group as "D2 Danny." After years of self-doubt, he made the decision to close the door on old limitations for good, and the shift has been remarkable to witness.  👉 The Breakthrough Award went to Matt Ryan of MTR Electrical. Since his last appearance on the podcast, he's scaled from million-dollar years to million-dollar quarters, built out real structure in his business, and started taking genuine time off with his family, even in a tough Victorian market. Catch his episode (Ep73) here: https://pravargroup.com/how-matt-broke-the-1m-barrier-and-built-without-burnout/  👉 The Excellence Award went to Dave Wilcox of Common Ground. What started as a handful of people has grown into a national operation with 60-70 employees, all built around his mission to get people outdoors. He shared the moment on stage with his wife, a reminder that this was never a solo effort.
