Calvin Armerding is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor based in South Carolina, specializing in Adlerian psychology. He regularly leads workshops, offers retreats, and gives keynotes on topics such as grief, couples counseling, and trauma. His recent work explores trauma as what Alfred Adler described as an “exogenous factor” — an external event that collides with an individual’s internal narrative, purpose, and movement.Calvin teaches a model that integrates trauma with Adlerian lifestyle investigation, framing trauma not as a fixed, defining event but as a disruption that can reveal or amplify a client’s core convictions, compensations, and private logic. This approach helps both clinicians and clients reconnect with agency, courage, and belonging without minimizing pain or pathologizing symptoms. His forthcoming book, DIRT FRESH (Fall Line Press, Atlanta), is part visual memoir and part emotional x-ray—a project rooted in finding light, humor, and color in the mundane. Having survived much, Dennis has made pictures through it all, using photography as a kind of recovery hymn. Adriene Caldwell has done more than survive—she has thrived. A former foster youth who beat the odds, Adriene is part of the less than 3% who go on to attend college, despite statistics showing that 20% of the U.S. prison population once passed through the foster care system. She doesn’t sugarcoat life’s harsh realities, but instead offers something far more powerful: hope. Hope that trauma will end, that the future can be different, and that life, even after the worst experiences, can improve.Adriene’s story is not an easy one, best captured by the trigger warnings that accompany her book: emotional and physical abuse, sexual assault of a child, the drowning death of a child, extreme poverty, mental illness, homelessness, foster care, pedophilia, graphic sexual descriptions, violence, bulimia, incest, death, and suicide. It is a story of pain, resilience, and ultimately, the possibility of a better life. hey, thanks for the pod. the volume is Really discrepant. from the host to the visitor. it's like a 700% difference- i can't hear the interviewer at all and keep the guest at a reasonable level. improving this sound issue would help a lot. and cutting the guest off mid-sentence with an ad was pretty weird. sorry for the poorer review, hope things improve for future episodes!

An excellent source of information, not just for therapists, or patients but also for relatives. I can only imagine what trauma patients must suffer through to get help. This podcast provides new insights with every episode. I'm very glad I found Guys podcast a few months ago and enables me to understand my girlfriends daily suffering better and be a better support for her. Thanks you!
