Ep 88 - How Chad Bushaw Turned Wealth Management Into a Ranching Dream

Chad Bushaw wasn’t raised in a ranching family but he was lucky enough to be around the culture in rural Oregon. A field trip to a cutting horse facility at an early age got him hooked on horses and he knew he had to figure out how to live that life. He was able to go work for different trainers during the summers and when it came time to pick a college he chose TCU because it was so close to Will Rogers coliseum and the cutting industry he was in love with. Chad continued to have great mentors that helped him have success in the horse industry as well as his professional life. He became a financial advisor which allowed him to make investments in Crown Ranch. Now he spends his days running cattle, training horses, and developing real estate around Parker County. Ep. 087 - Reinventing the Horse Business: The Solo Select Model

Melanie Smith didn’t grow up around horses but now has one of the biggest brands in western equine sports. From a young age she was driven to be around horses as much as possible and because her family and friends weren’t involved in it and really didn’t want her to be either she had to put in lots of hard work to do it. It started with an unpaid job cleaning stalls and other grunt work that most people don’t want to do these days. She worked her way up to giving lessons herself, helping other trainers, flipping ponies, and selling other people’s horses for commission. Once she had success selling other people’s horses and realized how profitable it could be she was hooked. Melanie began buying and selling her own horses and using a very unconventional model for the horse industry at that time. Solo Select has evolved into one of the biggest most recognizable brands in the western equine sports industry. Ep. 085 - Building an Empire in Agriculture: Jonathon Haralson’s Mission

Jonathon Haralson is on a mission to help producers in the agriculture industry. His story is pretty powerful and I think a lot of us can relate to it. Jonathon wanted to be involved in the ag industry but didn’t know in what way or how to start. He got a job with Farm Bureau but also had a side job running his own ranching operation. Soon he was able to grow his side job enough to where it was competing with his main job so he took the leap and went all in on his operation. Since then he’s done lots of learning and surrounding himself with the right people. Jonathon saw a need in the industry to help educate producers on how to actually become profitable so he started Empire Ag. Empire Ag now has several different branches from consulting to capital allocation. If you’re in the agriculture industry you need to check out this episode. Ep. 084 - Cowboy Tradition, Modern Craft: The Kerry Kelley Standard

Kerry Kelley grew up around the right mixture of metal fabrication and cowboying to want to build cowboy gear and had the knowledge to do it. Like a lot of people when they start something there was a lot of trial and error and mentorship from other makers. The first 100 or so pieces he built for very cheap or free but once he started figuring it out the business started taking off. He constantly works to improve his products and his process and make sure he only puts out top of the line gear. Kerry also stands behind anything you buy from him. It’s pretty cool to hear the story and insights from one of the most well known bit and spur makers in the industry. Ep. 080 - Born Into It: Carrying the Torch in Equine Sports Medicine w/Charlie Buchanan

Charlie Buchanan is a legacy equine veterinarian. He grew up in his dad’s practice and that’s all he ever wanted to do. Like a lot of successful people everyone only sees the outcome and not the journey. When Charlie was getting started he tried to see very horse he could and it didn’t matter where they were. He was putting in lots of hours and lots of miles traveling back and forth from Navasota to the Weatherford area and all across TX really. Finally he decided there was a need for an equine hospital in that area and opened one up in Morgan Mill which is now Signature Equine Hospital. Not only was there a need but he stayed super busy which allowed him to hire some of his friends and peers to come be apart of the practice also. What started out as a guy that loved working on horses quickly developed into a full blown business where Charlie learned all the pros and cons of being a business owner. We also dive into the other ventures that he has going on. This is a great episode with a lot of insight for not just veterinarians or horse owners but anyone wanting to start and grow a business.
