The media may have you believe that the recent Supreme Court decision on Mifepristone was a win for reproductive rights. In reality, it merely upheld the current status quo – a drastic departure from the standard once set by Roe. And an onslaught of challenges, aimed at making abortion impossible, if not illegal, are on the horizon. Joining us to explore this regression we have Melissa Murray, NYU Law Professor and co-host of the Strict Scrutiny Podcast, and Jessica Valenti, founder of AbortionEveryDay.com and author of the forthcoming book, Abortion: Our Bodies, Their Lies, and the Truths We Use to Win. Together, they discuss how our distorted democracy brought us to this moment, unpack the backward slide of abortion rights in America, and offer tips on what we can do to counter this trend.

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we reflect on how the US military saved democracy from fascism. This week, as the Senate marks up next year’s defense spending bill, Jon sits down with Bill Hartung of the Quincy Institute and Roxana Tiron of Bloomberg to investigate whether our arsenal is still bolstering democracy, both abroad and at home. From the active conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza to our rivalry with China, we explore the efficacy of U.S. strategy. Plus, we dive deep into the ballooning defense budget and discuss Jon’s attempts to shine a light on it all.

Despite what cable news may have you believe, Donald Trump is not the sole threat to our democracy. This week, we’re peeling back the rhetoric and taking a look at where the vulnerabilities in our institutions lie. In conversation with Jane Mayer, Chief Washington Correspondent for The New Yorker magazine and Noah Bookbinder, President of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Jon explores the roots of our democratic dysfunction. From ever-multiplying dark money to shark tanking ideas for tax transparency, this episode has it all. Plus, hear from producers of the pod and get a taste for what you can expect in episodes to come!
Fact Check: Jane Mayer mentions that Jon said the FEC is about as useless as male nipples. It was, in fact, Jordan Klepper who said this.

If Jon could get the idea of a database of tax dollars spent by address off the ground, I think plenty of Americans would contribute to making it happen!
Pure garbage, this guy Colbert and Trevor Noah can fuck right off.
Does it have any text with it if it has it will be better known
Jon, I don't watch TV at all. I do listen to a lot of podcasts.
great episode we have this problem in iran too the interest rate is so low about twenty percent but the inflation is about forty percent and the loans are available for rich people or who they have conections and banks are causing almost all the inflation and the budget defacet is also another part of the problem and unfortunately part of the budget goes to subsidies energy that is mostly consume by the corporations and rich people and the efficiency of the budget spending is so law and as a result the quality of the education system is not satisfying at all ofcourse the wealthy people sends their kids to private schools but some lefties in iran thinks high interest rate or eliminating energy subsidies are capitalism so they are against it unfortunately the trust between the people and the government is so law and I can't see any good policy in future
Wow, what a fantastic episode. This is the best commentary on Trump's indictment I've heard. Every American should listen to this!!
And why are they creating these polarizing narratives? 1% defense?
so sad... so one sided... so partisan. Stewart knows that MSNBC went to court for the same thing and made the same argument for Rachel Maddow, that she's a list who no reasonable person would take seriously, to win their case. ignoring this brings Stewart down to the level of fox News...I used to respect him.
That's what privatization get us, profit is priority 1-100
So funny! And thanks for intelligent deep dives. First time feeling how important this Podcast could become.
There is a model, and it's SET High (school for entrepreneurship and Technology) - a charter school in San Diego, CA. My husband, Neil McCurdy, is the principal and executive director. He and his team of educators have done an incredible job of individualizing education and doing exactly what you're talking about, Jon. Please consider using your platform to elevate his approach https://sethigh.org/
She lost me at “I have a horse”
And he just said he is a fan of rank choice voting. Nice.
Mark Cuban lol cracks me up how he is always showing up playing the obscenely rich fuck. Wonder if he really thinks he is a good actor?
This Interview is a masterclass in rhetoric, generalizations, and silicon Valley bullshit.
This Steve Hanke guy is a hack, wow. All noise from him no signal.
