Dr. Happymon Jacob speaks to Max Rodenbeck (South Asia Bureau Chief of the Economist) about the international reactions to the situation in Jammu & Kashmir after its autonomy under Article 370 was removed and the state was bifurcated into two union territories. Mr Rodenbeck argues that while constitutionality of the move may be debated, the fact remains that people of Jammu & Kashmir were not consulted, which is quite a blot on the Indian democracy. He further addresses the issue of the orchestrated visit of far-right members of the European Parliament to Kashmir, a move that has backfired internationally. Dr. Jacob and Mr Rodenbeck also discuss the heated diplomatic exchange between India & China over what India calls a domestic issue. On the question of the UN Human Rights body’s concern over Kashmir, Mr. Rodenbeck argues that it might not be in India’s interest, in the longer run, to undermine the legitimacy of these institutions. He also addresses the larger implications for the people in J&K, and the wider strategic fallout.

The decision to read down Article 370, scrap 35A and bifurcate the state of Jammu and Kashmir has met with mixed reactions in the new union territory of Ladakh. In this interview, Kargil based social activist Sajjad Hussain talks to The Wire about the historical reasons for Kargil’s opposition to the move.
In this episode of Beyond the Headlines, Siddharth Varadarajan describes six key features of the November 1984 massacres and how the Gujarat 2002 violence fit the same pattern. India needs a law to tackle mass crimes, one in which politicians and police officers who stand by as innocent people are killed get sent to jail.

It’s a scene straight out of an Abbas Mustan film, snazzy sports cars, lavish homes and lifestyles, racehorses – and most of all, deceit and intrigue.
Most unfortunately though, this is not fiction. It’s a tale of two brothers and an empire that systematically duped the system and innocent people of their life savings.
When the PMC crisis hit, it seemed like a case of an inept and corrupt few who had squandered away the bank’s money and reputation almost as a personal favor to a few.
But the rot ran deep.
In early October, Rakesh and Sarang Wadhawan, the promoters of HDIL, were arrested over alleged irregularities at Punjab & Maharashtra Cooperative Bank.
The Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai police said the fund diversion was pegged at Rs 6,500 crore or more – a staggering 73% of the bank’s entire assets.
PMC Bank advanced two-thirds of all its loans to HDIL, that’s currently undergoing bankruptcy proceedings. This was allegedly facilitated through the creation of more than 20,000 fake bank accounts.

She identifies and elaborates on the various issues that drive India-China relations including the border dispute, China’s nexus with Pakistan, the BRI and the CPEC, among others. Amb. Rao also comments on the fallouts of the August 5 decision to read down Article 370, the international fallout and the diplomatic way ahead for India.
