D's Journal: Brave (Abridged Episode 38)

In which D doesn't get shot at, subjected to anti-human racial slurs, captured, robbed of her magic, tortured, thrown off a building, mind-erased, or killed, which automatically makes DunBroch her favorite domain of 2025. D chooses the bear! The in-character fiction from the episode without the in-depth out-of-character discussion of the domain. Episode 38: Brave

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In this episode, Callaghan is finally dethroned as "darklord with the fewest lines of usable dialog" as we make a darklord out of...a bear. Not a werebear. Not a talking bear. Just a bear. But he's a bear who comes with a gothic curse and with FANTASY SCOTLAND, so it's well worth the effort of making him a darklord. Topics discussed include: --Why Mor'du is going to want to throw down with your PCs even if they don't feed anyone a magic tart that turns them into a bear (although that would certainly help); --All the world-building information about clans MacIntosh, MacGuffin, and Dingwall that Tom was able to glean or extrapolate from a deep dive into Brave's ancillary material; --The canonical domain that works beautifully with DunBroch as the source of the invading force that temporarily united the clans (no, not Original Recipe Falkovnia); --Strahd or bear; --And more! Episode 36: Gravity Falls

Welcome to the second installment of Wonderful World of Darklords' Small Screen Summer! In this episode, we're looking at the darklord who introduced a whole generation of fresh-faced little Disney XD viewers to cosmic horror. Bill Cipher is Baby's First Elder God and Gravity Falls is a phenomenal setting for occult investigation, but can a character as alien and amoral as Bill ever meet our four elements of darklord? (Spoilers: yes, but only with some help from Book of Bill. No, you don't have to read Book of Bill in order to understand the episode; we'll summarize it for you.) Topics discussed include: --Preserving the feel of Gravity Falls, a town where everyone is deep in denial about the existence of the supernatural, in a world where magic is objectively real; --Potential mysteries for your PCs to solve, since they probably already know what's hidden in the basement of the Mystery Shack; --Tips for giving monsters a Gravity Falls spin, since brain-eating zombie clots feel a little too grim but bride-hungry gnome clots are an established part of the setting; --The 2e/3e darklord whose powers and plans map almost perfectly to Bill's (although his name is confusingly close to that of a major Gravity Falls character, which isn't helpful for podcasting clarity); --and more! The full write-up for Gravity Falls is available on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/528280/Gravity-Fell-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?affiliate_id=241770 The Shadow Rift adventure is also available on DM's Guild, although not for free: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/17482/The-Shadow-Rift-2e Timestamps 0:00 Introduction 5:18 The Lord 39:42 The Land 1:11:52 Dread Possibilities 1:40:21 Parting Thoughts 2:00:38 D’s Parting Thoughts 2:07:08 Episode 37 Watchlist Content Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/posts/introducing-128061331?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link, on Tumblr at https://www.tumblr.com/wonderfulworldofdarklords/782533621911322624/introducing-content-warnings-for-ds-journal?source=share, or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid037sb7hNXRaRMpyamiLiB4EYFfnqmpeGBX3DdS2gzPtUq3EooecwHAgwQVk73cbFMl&id=100083262132645) Memory modification (major), gaslighting (major) All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org: Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 9 No.1 (main theme), performed by Eduardo Vinuela Chopin Etude Op. 25, No. 12 in C Minor: “Ocean” (darklord theme), performed by Edward Neeman Chopin Nocturne in F Minor, Op. 55 No. 1 (land theme), performed by Luke Faulkner Rachmaninoff MorcGranados Twelve Spanish Dances, Op. 37, II. - Oriental (main theme), performed by Monica Alianello (public domain mark 1.0)eaux de Fantaisie, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 35: Gargoyles

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords' Small Screen Summer! We're kicking off our summer of Disney shows with the villain that made little twelve-year-old Rachel look from her TV screen to her copy of the 1994 Ravenloft supplement Domains and Denizens and say, "I think she belongs in here": Demona. She's a Byronic garbage fire who will stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror, but she's also less involved in the day-to-day operations of the domain than Xanatos, which poses some unique challenges. Topics discussed include: How to compress the series' thousand-year timeline and globe-spanning adventures to a single domain that got pulled into Ravenloft after Strahd did; Why people might be uniquely afraid of gargoyles in a world that has aarakocra, dragonborn, and tieflings; Adapting the various antagonist factions of Gargoyles into D&D terms, from Xanatos to the Hunters to Macbeth; Drawing your PCs into Demona's orbit even though she's much more interested in messing with Goliath than with a random band of wandering transients; and more! Episode 34: Thanos

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords: Marvel May! As soon as we announced this theme last May, you knew this one was coming. Thanos is such a compelling Big Bad for the entire MCU that they've been flailing to replace him ever since Infinity War, and he could make a fantastic Big Bad for your campaign as well . . . but can any villain, no matter how grandiose and self-deluded, be a darklord if they don't have a domain in the source material? Topics discussed include: --The D&D setting that fits perfectly with Thanos's backstory and motivation, and also gives us plenty of flavor for a domain we have to invent almost from whole cloth; --What even is an Infinity Stone in D&D terms, anyway?; --Alternate motivations for Thanos, since resource scarcity is hardly the most pressing problem in Ravenloft; --The dangers of introducing an epic-level villain with an epic-level scheme to any game that isn't all about him; --And more! Episode 33: Labyrinth

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In this extremely long episode, Tom and an increasingly thirsty Rachel are talking about a villain who looms large in the imaginations of Xennials everywhere: Jareth, the Goblin King. He's a magnetic and malevolent presence whose domain is a perfect reflection of his disaster bi energy, but he has no canon backstory and may just be a figment of Sarah's imagination, so adapting him posed some challenges. But if Sarah can escape the oubliette, cross the Bog of Eternal Stench, and say no to Jareth looking at her like that in the masquerade ball, we can rise to this challenge. Topics discussed include: --Squaring the circle of making Jareth an independent being and a figment of Sarah's imagination at the same time, and how you can make him occupy that same role for your PCs; --Adapting the labyrinth so it reflects your PCs' inner worlds in the same way that the canon labyrinth reflects Sarah's, from "give the movie's labyrinth-dwellers the mannerisms of your NPCs" to high-concept lunacy that makes our Christmas Carol episode look straightforward; --How to bring your PCs into the labyrinth in the first place, since presumably none of them are going to wish for the goblins to steal their babies; --Why everything about the labyrinth, including the thirteen-hour time limit, is ultimately a distraction from Jareth's real game; --and more! The full write-up for the Goblin King's Labyrinth is available for free on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/517199/The-Goblin-Kings-Labyrinth-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?view_as_pub=1 Our Listener's Choice poll is available as a public post on our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/listeners-choice-125322997 Timestamps 0:00 Introduction 6:01 The Lord 53:05 The Land 1:21:50 Dread Possibilities 2:15:37 Parting Thoughts 2:41:52 D’s Parting Thoughts All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org: Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 9 No.1 (main theme), performed by Eduardo Vinuela Chopin Etude Op. 25, No. 12 in C Minor: “Ocean” (darklord theme), performed by Edward Neeman Chopin Nocturne in F Minor, Op. 55 No. 1 (land theme), performed by Luke Faulkner Rachmaninoff Morceaux de Fantaisie, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 104: Phineas and Ferb

Ah, Leslie the Listener! How unexpected...and by unexpected, we mean COMPLETELY EXPECTED! Behold, our April UNFools-inator! You see, back in Gimmelshtump, we always wanted to run a Phineas and Ferb-themed session of Ravenloft, but we didn't know how to do it, and even if we had, no one would have come to our game because they would have been playing Roger's game instead. So with the April UNFools-inator, we're going to turn what would normally be a wacky April Fools Day episode into an actual guide to running a Phineas and Ferb session in your Ravenloft game. Topics discussed include: --Why Dr. Doofenshmirtz is the most evil, brilliant, and devastatingly handsome darklord in all of Ravenloft (or will be, when he targets Strahd with the Uglinator); --The role of Vanessa's friend Candace, along with her two brothers and her very normal pet platypus; --How to bring heavily armed transients into the Tri-State Area. Episode 32: Up

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! We're continuing last month's theme of "traveling to amazing and faraway places" with a very different elderly darklord who mistrusts outsiders. Up is one of the greatest animated movies ever made, but can it be a great D&D setting as well? Topics discussed include: --How to make Kevin feel like a singularly beautiful and unique creature in a world with literal unicorns; --Why Up is especially suited to low-level play (although it can also be adapted to higher-level parties); --The D&D version of "intelligent talking dogs in airplanes that shoot tranquilizer darts;" --Why it's critical to enter Paradise Falls with a specific goal in mind in order to make the adventure feel like the movie; --and more! Episode 31: Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! Many, MANY of you have asked for a domain based on the Disney movie about a team of heavily armed transients who dive through subterranean tunnels in search of either treasure or a sad, unresolved Bond. Atlantis is, without question, the most D&D movie that Disney has ever done, and while it's more Eberron or Spelljammer than Ravenloft, we're here for the challenge. Because, hey, that's what this is all about, right? I mean, imagination, teamwork, intellectual puzzles. Unless, maybe...we're just in it for the cool submarine. Topics discussed include: --The challenge of choosing a darklord for Atlantis, since Rourke is there to ransack, not to rule; --The D&D equivalent of "technologically advanced immortals who have somehow forgotten how to use their technology and read;" --A default adventure for Atlantis that will still (hopefully) have plot twists and surprises for players who have seen the movie; --Ideas for adapting Atlantis to Eberron and Dragonlance, with or without Ravenloft attached; --And more! The full write-up for Atlantis is available for free on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/510757/The-Lost-Empire-of-Atlantis-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?view_as_pub=1 Our fundraiser for Catholic Legal Immigration Services is here: https://gofund.me/628989d5 There doesn't seem to be a place for comments, so please email or message us with your Listener's Choice nominee after donating. Episode 30: Who Framed Roger Rabbit

CONTENT ADVISORY: Because this episode is based on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, it takes place in Langeles, a fantasy version of Los Angeles. I don't think we even mention fire, but if the Los Angeles wildfires hit at all close to home for you, we're putting a detailed content advisory that includes all the neighborhoods and landmarks mentioned at the end of the show notes, with separate entries for the episode proper and the D fiction (so you can skip one or both if you're less worried about content and want to avoid spoilers). Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! We're reaching back into our childhood nightmares and pulling out one of our favorite Disney villains: Judge Doom. He's made of pure nightmare fuel, but he's also a man living his best life who only makes sense in a world with living cartoons, so adapting him was a challenge. For Doom, though, we'll take up that challenge, because he's magnificent. Better than Goofy. Topics discussed include: --The obscure creature that allows us to adapt toons into D&D terms; --More than a minute of Eberron, including how to do Who Framed Roger Rabbit purely as an Eberron game if you choose; --A beloved Disney movie we're not planning to adapt into a full domain that you can easily plunder for Roger Rabbit NPCs and storylines; --Ideas for running a years-long Toontown/Runetown game with Judge Doom as the spider at the center of the web without it becoming repetitive; --and more! Episode 29: A Christmas Carol

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In this episode, we're looking at a property that Disney has adapted for both Mickey Mouse and the Muppets: A Christmas Carol. At its heart, A Christmas Carol is a story of redemption--so how do we square that with darklords, who are fundamentally irredeemable? By sending your PCs into a trippy journey through the past, present, and future of a character who isn't the darklord, that's how. Topics discussed include: --Why we didn't choose Scrooge as our darklord, instead opting for another miser whose prison comes with hate; --Concrete examples of past, present, and future visions for Scrooge, a beloved canon NPC, and two PC archetypes; --Ways for your non-Charisma PCs to help Scrooge be a better person (because even the Ghost of Christmas Future had an astronomical Intimidation bonus); --Various levels of dreamscape weirdness, from "we're literally just doing A Christmas Carol" to "we just cited the last two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion;" --And more! Episode 28: Spirited Away (Listeners' Choice)

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In the spirit of Thanksgiving and of thankfulness for you, our listeners, we're presenting the domain you chose in our Listeners' Choice poll: Spirited Away. Yubaba is an excellent villain, Chihiro's parents and No-Face give us some phenomenal horror moments, and we actually see the bathhouse's borders close in the first twenty minutes of the movie...but the bathhouse feels more like a Domain of Delight than of Dread, and Yubaba doesn't have much of a backstory even in ancillary materials, so we had our work cut out for us. Topics discussed include: --An Act of Ultimate Darkness and element of tragedy/relatability for Yubaba that plays into some themes we might not have been able to work into the domain otherwise; --Why Zeniba and Yubaba hate each other with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns, and how to play up that rivalry in a way that lends itself to more traditional D&D antics than Ghibli movies typically allow; --How to get your PCs to seek out jobs in the bathhouse and sign their names away to Yubaba even though there's no way in the Nine Hells they're going to think it's a good idea; --The sorts of adventures one can have in a setting that doesn't lend itself to combat, puzzle-solving, or the disarming of traps; --and more! Bonus Episode 6: Night on Bald Mountain

Happy Halloween from Wonderful World of Darklords! Night on Bald Mountain is such an important part of Disney's spooky legacy that we had no choice but to make an episode about it . . . but how the heck do you make Chernobog a darklord? If you can answer that question, we salute you. We opted to make him something akin to a Mist Traveler, but without the "traveling" part since he has a mountain for legs. Topics discussed include: --why this isn't a Peddler's Tale, even though it rprobably should be; --how Chernobog came to be fused with a mountain, and why that mountain is actually several mountains in a weird metaphysical sense; --story ideas for Bald Mountain that range from folk horror to Seven Samurai to Strahd and Azalin meeting up and snarking at each other; --how to have an entire campaign when your Big Bad is a stationary demon who only wakes for up one night out of the year; --and more! Episode 27: The Haunted Mansion

CONTENT ADVISORY: because the 2023 film version of The Haunted Mansion involves convincing a living soul to die and join the happy haunts, this episode discusses suicide. Welcome, foolish mortals, to Wonderful World of Darklords! We are your hosts--your podcast hosts. Kindly load the full episode, and make room (on your hard drive) for every byte. There's no turning back now. Unless you stop listening five minutes in, I suppose. There's always that way out... This episode is primarily drawing on the 2023 Haunted Mansion movie since it has a darklord and a plot, but if you prefer other versions of the Mansion, don't worry; we're incorporating as many as possible. Topics discussed include: --How to give Alistair Crump, a fun but cartoonishly evil villain, an element of tragedy and relatability; --How to essentially turn the Haunted Mansion into Hill House, Hell House, or the Overlook; --Alternate versions of the domain that highlight other ghosts as the darklord or boss, including Ramsley the butler, Constance Hatchaway, Henry Ravenswood, or even Madam Leota; --So, so, SO many mechanics from the older material to represent hauntings; --And more!
