This episode recorded during the Dry Tortugas residency on Loggerhead Key.  Our guest Jacob Kelley with us on the island for part of the time.  He was an intern for the National Park Service finishing his college degree.  Jacob's job on Loggerhead was to monitor the many loggerhead turtle nests on the island, release hatchlings and keep nest data documented.  Jacob spent nearly 80 days in 2020 on the island over spanning multiple rotations and was a great resource to us about the island.

15 months of hard work have paid off! Carl and Shannon have been named the 2020 Artists in Residence at Dry Tortugas National Park.  In this special episode the tables are turned and the Tortuga Brothers are interviewed by Lake Worth's very own Mary Lindsey.  We talk about the application and where the idea came from as well as our thoughts about living off the grid on a 40 acre desert island with no company accept sea turtles and birds migrating south for the winter for an entire month.

Flying Tortuga Brothers Episode 14 - Mark Golden

Well here we are at episode 14 recorded 2 weeks before our Dry Tortugas residency application is due.  I can think of no better guest to be the capstone for this part of the podcast.  We were fortunate enough through Shannon to be able to sit down and talk with Mark Golden.  Co founder and CEO of Golden Artists Colors.  Mark is not only a paint maker but also hosts a residency, The Golden Foundation Residency where 18 lucky artist a year get to go to Paint and tinker with materials  for a month at Golden Paint in Upstate NY.  Passionate about art residencies and the communities they create Mark also sits on the board of the Alliance for Artists Communities which is a resource for art residencies around the world.  We had a great conversation ranging from the history of Golden Paints to residencies and artists.  We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did getting the opportunity to talk to Mark.

The Tortuga Brothers scored a great get for this week's episode!  We sat down to interview Beth and Hailey Williams.  They are the dynamic mother daughter duo chosen as Artists in Residence at Dry Tortugas National Park for 2019. Beth and Hailey are home after after spending the month of September on Loggerhead Key.  As this is the exact residency we hope to be chosen for in 2020 we were thrilled to chat and let them give us the scoop on their experiences and what we can expect if chosen to be AIRs in 2020. Flying Tortuga Brothers Episode 12 - Carl and Shannon talking travel and art.

After a hurricane threatened the end of summer holidays for both Shannon and Carl they were able to go on their trips.  It has been three weeks since the last episode and the boys are back to talk about their adventures before jumping into a schedule of fall interview episodes.  Shannon's travels included a trip to the Hispanic Museum and Library in NYC where he met with Dr Marcus Burke for a tour and to view the Sorolla paintings.  Carl's summer trip took him to the Mediterranean where some of his highlights were a trip to the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice where he saw 14th century church paintings and an exhibit of Georg Baselitz paintings as well as photographing the early and late day light in Venice.

Hi - This week on the FTB podcast Carl and Shannon talk about Residencies they are applying for and where their travels will take them for the next few weeks.  This episode includes a special treat Shannon reads his new poem Pennants.  We will be away from South Florida for a bit and will resume interviews and our regular schedule of podcasts when we return.  We are each heading off on our adventures armed with a digital recorder for impromptu interviews or fun ambient sounds so who knows what we will return with.  To go along with this episode there will be blog post at our website highlighting some of the art and places we talk about in this episode.

Flying Tortuga Brothers Episode 4 - The Clyde Butcher Interview Part 1

This week the Tortuga Brothers (carl and Shannon) took a road trip across Florida to visit and chat with legendary landscape photographer Clyde Butcher.  Clyde was so generous with hi time and his wisdom that the interview was over an hour long.  We decided to split the interview up into two episodes.  This is part one and part two will be published on Thursday 6/13.  It was a distinct honor to be able to interview Clyde whose landscape photography and stewardship of the Everglades makes him tops in our book!  In fact when we decided to start interviewing artists associated with the National Parks we never imagined we would get Clyde as our inaugural interview!  He set the bar very high on how we want our other interviews to go. Flying Tortuga Brothers Episode 1

Florida artists Shannon Torrence and Carl Stoveland teamed up to apply for an artist residency in September 2019 on Loggerhead Key in the Dry Tortugas.  Alas their last minute application was not selected, but they were not deterred and instead decided to create a social media campaign including this podcast and a blog to document the work we are doing, the steps going into the application and eventually life off the grid on Loggerhead Key. The podcast will be posted every two weeks and will feature interviews with artists who have done this residency in the past.
