Ever wondered what it's like to do a PhD in vocal pedagogy? Or how that PhD might translate into teaching singing?Want to know exactly why we think classical vocal training doesn't work for contemporary commercial music singers? We go deep with Dr Marisa Lee Naismith, author of Singing Contemporary Commercial Music Styles, a pedagogical framework:How difficult is it to juggle the work of a PhD, family life and a full-time business? Marisa and Gillyanne compare notes (3.00)Why is CCM pedagogy still not thought of as legitimate? Marisa gives us the background (9.00)What is the single biggest difference between classical and CCM music, and therefore the biggest requirement for teaching CCM singers that classical teachers don't usually do? Jeremy shares his thoughts. (16.50)Marisa prods Jeremy about bias - what's his answer? (18.30)What is the 1% that Marisa is talking about, and what was the survey Gillyanne & Jeremy did that confirms it? (26.40)And what IS the job of a singing teacher? Marisa reveals her take on what needs to happen in a singing lesson. It's a fascinating conversation, and this is just part 1!Drop in and join usGet Marisa's book here https://amzn.to/3EG7O3p Get the This Is A Voice book here https://amzn.to/3A9steNGet the One Minute Voice Warmup app here, it's got a 4.9star ratingAppstore https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/one-minute-voice-warmup/id1212802251Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.speechtools.warmup&hl=en_GB&pli=1We've also got this! ↓The 5 Days to Better Singing Teaching course online, with voice coaching techniques, vocal articulation exercises and a LOT more for the up-to-date singing teacher is here https://vocal-process-hub.teachable.com/p/5-days-to-better-singing-teachingFor the best self-guided learning check out the Vocal Process Learning Lounge - 16 years of vocal coaching resources (over 600 videos) for less than the price of one private singing lesson. Feed the dog! Changing your pitch patterns can help your listeners understand your emotions and meaning. In this week's This Is A Voice podcast (Season 6 Episode 12), expert vocal trainers Dr Gillyanne Kayes & Jeremy Fisher use the sentence "Feed the dog" to showcase different pitch patterns and meanings. We read out the instructions from the second half of exercise 26 (page 84 of This Is A Voice) and show you step by step how to change meaning, intonation and interest in your speaking voice. Jeremy reads out a paragraph of text with two very different pitch patterns (it's almost like singing), and Gillyanne shares a very simple exercise to help non-singers process their own spoken voice pitch patterns.  Jeremy also demonstrates two different pitch patterns that can become irritating if repeated - the upward inflection and the creak down. There's a BRILLIANT exercise borrowed from UCL's phonetics department for speaking voice inflection that's very close to science fiction, and Jeremy demonstrates all four versions of the exercise to create four different emotional states.(You can go to the free preview of our Pitch, Pace & Power webinar where we explore this more here https://vocal-process-hub.teachable.com/courses/the-vocal-technique-learning-lounge/lectures/27906956) Get the This Is A Voice book here https://amzn.to/3A9steN Get the One Minute Voice Warmup app here, it's got a 4.9star rating Appstore https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/one-minute-voice-warmup/id1212802251 Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.speechtools.warmup&hl=en_GB&pli=1 Sam and Garry at Speechtools are here https://speechtools.co/ We've also got this! ↓ The 5 Days to Better Singing Teaching course online, with voice coaching techniques, vocal articulation exercises and a LOT more for the up-to-date singing teacher is here https://vocal-process-hub.teachable.com/p/5-days-to-better-singing-teaching For the best self-guided learning check out the Vocal Process Learning Lounge - 16 years of vocal coaching resources (over 600 videos) for less than the price of one private singing lesson. No? Yes!What makes a voice more interesting to listen to? Tone? Volume?Pitch patterns help your listeners understand your emotions and meaning. In this episode, expert vocal trainers Dr Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher riff on pitch patterns and meaning in speaking voice.Exercise 26 on page 84 of our This Is A Voice book is a brilliant vocal technique exercise for improving your speaking (and singing). We go step by step through the instructions and demonstrate how the exercise works in both male and female voice.Jeremy demonstrates monotonous voice, a very boring version of the test sentences. And both Gillyanne and Jeremy speak with extreme pitch changes, giving a totally different meaning to the same words. And we walk you through a pitching exercise in our One Minute Voice Warmup app too. It's a cracking episode, one of our best so far.If you want to discover how to increase your speaking range, improve your voice use and get your listeners more interested in what you're saying, tune in to this episode!Get the This Is A Voice book here https://amzn.to/3A9steNGet the One Minute Voice Warmup app here, it's got a 4.9star ratingAppstore https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/one-minute-voice-warmup/id1212802251Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.speechtools.warmup&hl=en_GB&pli=1Sam and Garry at Speechtools are here https://speechtools.co/Anne Leatherland of Vocal Intuition is here https://anneleatherland.co.uk/Susie Millen of MyVocalFitness is here https://www.myvocalfitness.com/We've also got this! What does a movie musical vocal coach do? Singer and pedagogue Irene Bartlett is back to chat with vocal trainers Gillyanne & Jeremy about coaching Austin Butler to sing Elvis in the latest movie, and how she works with singing teachers in the Pedagogy Programme at Griffith University in Brisbane. What was the first thing Irene needed to do when meeting Austin (or any singer) for the first time? (3.00)What is she listening for when working with professional singers? (6.53)How do we know whether a singer has real tension or whether they're adding it "for effect"? (12.00)How do you teach singing teachers to become BETTER singing teachers? We're all in agreement, but on what? Jeremy clarifies (22.40)Why might "the 5 note scale" be a problematic exercise for singers? What is good singing? Singer and pedagogue Dr Irene Bartlett joins vocal trainers Gillyanne & Jeremy to talk about good singing, function and style. It’s an honest conversation between vocal trainers separated by 10,000 miles but together in spirit. Is it divisive to separate classical, CCM and Musical Theatre music? Irene has a great one-sentence answer to this (2.40)Is there a difference between classical singing lessons and musical theatre singing lessons? How do classical singers react to their first heavy metal, or newbies react to their first opera? It’s a fascinating part of the conversation about vocal technique, sound output, performing environment and genre. What happens when you look at a spectrogram of a classical versus a contemporary singer? (5.36 onwards)What do a lot of acoustically trained singers get wrong about working with a mic? (8.10)And what does Irene do first in a singing lesson (that Gillyanne and Jeremy applaud her for)? (10.30)Which “standard” MT vocal technique does Gillyanne think needs a flight correction? (11.19)And why does Jeremy think your “vocal look” isn’t relevant in Musical Theatre but is relevant in CCM? Petra Borzynski, singer, cognitive behavioural therapist & somatic vocal coach, is back with Gillyanne and Jeremy for more wisdom on dealing with emotion.Teacher boundaries, the difference between trauma and emotional discomfort, and why you don't need to be your student's therapist. There are questions on somatic exercises for performance nerves, and Jeremy shares what he did to deal with the extreme nerves in his workshop at the PEVoC conference last month. And a question on which exercises might stimulate the vagus nerve, and a discussion on polyvagal theory. Also why you don't need to be an expert in every field (and what Jeremy thinks causes that problem). And building a network of like-minded experts around you. It's an incredibly deep and useful episode for singing teachers, singers and performers alike. You can see Gillyanne being (but not sounding) nervous and how she deals with it at the beginning of her Round Table at the Pan European Voice Conference here https://youtu.be/76w9dvWr9kw Petra Borzynski's work is here - https://www.youtube.com/user/singingtuition https://www.facebook.com/singingsense Mental Health in the Performing Arts Studio course - https://singingsense.com/products/mental-health-in-the-performing-arts-studio/ Voo breathing Peter Levine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7zAseaIyFA  Polyvagal theory -    Organising principles: https://integratedlistening.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/infographic-organizing-principles-of-pvt.pdf   20 page primer: https://integratedlistening.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/polyvagal-primer-from-clinicalapplicationofpolyvagaltheory-3.2019.pdf   Video: https://youtu.be/ec3AUMDjtKQ Resources from Gillyanne and Jeremy - This Is A Voice - 99 Exercises to Train, Project and Harness the Power of Your Voice https://amzn.to/3uSw66c  The Vocal Process Learning Lounge, with 16 years of voice training resources (over 600 videos) for less than the price of one singing lesson. On the day of Queen Elizabeth's funeral, Petra Borzynski, cognitive behavioural therapist & somatic vocal coach, joins Gillyanne and Jeremy for some expert wisdom on dealing with emotion.Singing is an emotional act. And we sometimes need to sing, or to teach singing, when we're emotional. How do we deal with our own wobbles, and when should we deal with the wobbles of our singing students? There are questions from listeners on anxiety in singing lessons - when do we hold the space for people's feelings and when do we hand over to a professional therapist.Petra shares some of the red flags to look out for.And how can we make our studio a safe space for people who might have experienced trauma? Petra's answer might surprise you.A hugely useful episode for singing teachers, singers and performers alike on the subject of anxiety, nerves and trauma in singing.Petra Borzynski's work is here –https://singingsense.comhttps://www.youtube.com/user/singingtuitionhttps://www.facebook.com/singingsenseMental Health in the Performing Arts Studio course https://singingsense.com/products/mental-health-in-the-performing-arts-studio/ Resources from Gillyanne and Jeremy - This Is A Voice - 99 Exercises to Train, Project and Harness the Power of Your Voice https://amzn.to/3uSw66cThe Vocal Process Learning Lounge, with 16 years of voice training resources (over 600 videos) for less than the price of one singing lesson.
