Description

Together, we're redefining what it means, looks and feels like, to be doing "woman's work" in the world today. With confidence and the occasional rant.

From boardrooms to studios, kitchens to coding dens, we explore the multifaceted experiences of today's woman, confirming that the new definition of "woman's work" is whatever feels authentic, true, and right for you.

We're shedding expectations, setting aside the "shoulds", giving our finger to the "supposed tos". We're torching the old playbook and writing our own rules.

Who runs the world? You decide.

I find tools like Human Design fascinating, and it’s always a little shocking to me how accurate they can be, and how taking the time to self-reflect, to get to know myself better, to learn more about who I am and who I’m not – always makes me better. And I want that for you too! So I’ve invited Emma Dunwoody, Human Design Expert, Master Coach, Behavioral Specialist and host of the #1 Global Human Design Podcast to be our guest as we dive deeper into Human Design. Emma wants to inspire everyone to unlock their inner wisdom, take their power back and feel deeply confident in the decisions they make, creating a population that values themselves and courageously lives their truth. My goal in doing a series of episodes about tools like Human Design, is for you to  increase your self-awareness, sure, but also your self-acceptance and self-appreciation. It’s about building your confidence – because confidence is all about trusting yourself – which requires you to build a deep, intimate relationship with all the things you are and are not, and invites you to embrace yourself just as you are. It’s time to get to know YOU better! Connect with Emma: Website: www.emmadunwoody.com   IG: @the_human_design_coach  Free Chart: https://www.emmadunwoody.com/get-your-chart Like what you heard? We continue with the theme of building healthy relationships with ourselves, and then with others, by talking about Human Design in today’s episode. Karen Curry Parker is our guest and she holds a Ph.D. in Integrative Health, and is an international Amazon best-selling author of multiple books on personal transformation, spirituality, and Human Design. She is the creator of the Quantum Human Design™ and the Quantum Alignment System™ and has been coaching, speaking, training, and podcasting on these topics for over 30 years. Her core mission is to help people reconnect with their natural creativity, manifest their desires effectively, and consciously use the frequency of language and narrative to craft a life that best serves themselves and adds more love and joy into the world. What would happen if you practiced curiosity over judgment and celebrated all that is vs. trying to find fault or worrying there’s something wrong or missing? What if you appreciated that you were designed exactly as you were meant to be? Get to know YOU. I mean, seriously, can you imagine anyone more fascinating?! In this episode, we talk about the Enneagram, which you’ve likely heard about since it’s all the rage right now! Our guest and resident expert is Kristi Rowles, a Mental Health Therapist turned full-time Enneagram Coach. In the Enneagram world, she is known for teaching it in a way that is easy to understand, practical, fun, and driven toward compassion. In her work coaching individuals and couples, speaking, and leading corporate leadership training, people often ask her, “How do I get certified to do what you do?”  So in 2018, she built Enneagram University, where they are committed to transforming Enneagram-and-people-loving humans into the most competent and confident enneagram coaches on the market. The Enneagram is an opportunity to get to know yourself better – to understand your motivations and preferences, give you insights into your behavior and choices, and help to identify paths for growth and development. And because, as women, we have a tendency to be others-focused, I’m going to encourage you to start with and stay with you for a while. Use it for self-reflection. Create deeper levels of understanding and intimacy with yourself. Do the internal work. This episode is all about reshaping waste management in our lives and our communities, with a focus on changing the disposable culture we live in into one where reuse is the standard. Get ready to take some notes! Multi-faceted global CEO & Entrepreneur Jessica Gonzalez, joins us. She has a long history of building and scaling international startups from the ground up, most recently bringing her entrepreneurial spirit and expertise into the world of sustainable waste management as Founder and CEO of Happen Ventures. At Happen Ventures, she’s championing the cause of beneficial reuse, transforming waste into valuable resources, innovating cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions, and reducing landfill waste all while supporting local communities.  The time has come for action – for all of us to put our money where our mouth is. I don’t mean every single one of us going to zero waste – that’s perfection and as we know, perfection is an unattainable goal. But if all of us reused imperfectly, reduced even minimally, and recycled intentionally – we would ALL be better for it. And, as most things do, they start with YOU, and me, and us. Why is it that when someone says self-care, I have to keep my eyes from rolling into the back of my head? Why does it feel like it doesn’t mean what it’s supposed to mean anymore? Is it really the answer to ALL of our problems? And does it even help to tell women who are already exhausted and already have more shit than they can handle to do more self-care? I don’t know, friend. But we’re going to talk about it. Our guest is Dr. Christine Coleman, the Founder and CEO of POC Thriving, a private practice specializing in the intersection of mental health and inclusion, as well as the Executive Director of Sol Sisters Inc., a nonprofit with a mission to help diverse women overcome societal barriers by providing educational and empowering experiences that promote their personal and professional evolution. Working with companies like Pinterest, Business Wire, Mulesoft by Salesforce, and the Major League Baseball Network, Dr. Christine focuses on mental health, inclusivity, and belonging initiatives so organizations can better prioritize the psychological well-being and retention of their employees. Prioritizing yourself, and taking time to care for yourself sends you and others a message about your self-worth. You’re teaching yourself and others how you deserve to be treated. And it radiates into all areas of your life. We’re not meant to be running on fumes… we get to find the fuel we need. Decision-making is a skill we should have all learned in school, but didn’t. On this episode, we’re going to learn how to make decisions - and not little inconsequential ones, but the big life-changing and life-defining decisions - with the help of Abby Davisson. Abby has dedicated her career to helping others achieve their goals, first as a social innovation leader and now as an author and entrepreneur. She is the co-author of Money and Love: An Intelligent Roadmap for Life’s Biggest Decisions and the founder and CEO of the Money and Love Institute, which helps people make better decisions that lead to happiness, prosperity, and purpose.  When making decisions, sometimes a pause is helpful, sometimes you do really need to “think about it”, but at some point – and I’m guessing that point is much sooner than we think – we must decide. We cannot make progress, we don’t get closer to what matters, without making decisions. So it’s time we learn how to make the best ones for us! Women supporting women is a hashtag we see all over the place, but are we really doing it well? In business, I know many women who hesitate to leverage their own communities to grow their businesses. So this episode is for the business owner that’s wondering how to do this. It’s also for the friends, and the loved ones, to learn to be and become women who support women. It’s not just a hashtag friends, it’s a way of being. It’s an ACTION. To help us be smart about leveraging and creating a connected community to grow your business, is Kami Guildner, founder of the Extraordinary Women Ignite Conference, host of the award-winning Extraordinary Women Radio™, and best-selling author of Firedancer: Your Spiral Journey to a Life of Passion and Purpose.  It’s my belief there’s a special place in heaven for what my sister calls “Front Row Friends” – the ones who show up ready to cheer you on, are the first to stand for the ovation, and are screaming support for you and whatever you do at the top of their lungs. Our topic today may sound like one that falls under the old definition of woman’s work, but we’re going to talk about the etiquette everyone should know today. Heather Wiese joins us, as an Etiquette Writer and Founder of Bell’INVITO, a woman-owned, responsible luxury brand that sells stationery and leather goods made with heart and high standards. Heather is passionate about empowering others by teaching social skills and outlining how to invest in relationships for optimal results. She advocates re-facing old-school stodgy etiquette with a new vernacular and refreshing relatability, with the philosophy that the world is a better, kinder place when people invest in social skills and learn about empathy. And she’s here to help us with the do’s & don’ts and ways to be emotionally intelligent in a variety of common social events & situations. While you’re out there doing whatever version of woman’s work feels true for you, remember to mind your manners and follow this old quote – if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all. Let’s throw out what no longer works for us, but make sure to bring forward the things that do. Every time you lie – or fib, stretch or bend the truth, blow smoke, tell a white lie, tell a bald faced lie, lie thru your teeth, spin a yarn, hold back, keep the peace, it doesn’t matter what you call it – every time you do it, you’re chipping away at your own confidence.  On this episode of This Is Woman’s Work, we’re going to talk about the lies we tell, why we do it, and what it’s costing us. Lauren Handel Zander, Founder and CEO of Handel Group, an international corporate consulting and life coaching company, joins as our guest. Her coaching methodology, The Handel Method®, is taught in over 35 universities and institutes of learning around the world, including MIT, Stanford Graduate School of Business, and NYU. She is the creator of Inner.U: the online coaching course that teaches us to Human Better®, and leverages the entirety of The Handel Method, which is being used by celebrities, CEOs, and entrepreneurs. The author of Maybe It’s You, Lauren has been a featured expert in The New York Times, BBC, Forbes, Women’s Health, Dr. Oz, and Marie Claire and has also contributed to Businessweek and the Huffington Post. It’s time to tell the truth – your truth. This episode is about the value of connection – and I’m going to encourage every single one of us to take one measurable step away from loneliness and toward connection after listening. Kasley Killam is a leading expert in social health and the author of The Art and Science of Connection: Why Social Health is the Missing Key to Living Longer, Healthier, and Happier. As a graduate of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, sought-after advisor and keynote speaker, and founder of Social Health Labs, Kasley has been improving global well-being through connection for over a decade. Her collaborations with organizations like Google, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the World Economic Forum contribute to building more socially healthy products, workplaces, and communities. And she’s here today to talk about loneliness and the value of connection. There is no pill or diet that can replace human connection. No pharmacy or doctor who can fill the void or our desire to be seen. In a world of followers, comments and algorithms, we are craving connection, intimacy, and empathy. And here’s what I know for sure - you deserve to be seen, heard, and valued. We all do. Connection – as if our lives depend on it – that is woman’s work. THE Alison Armstrong returns to our show to continue what was a wildly popular discussion earlier in the year where we talked about men, because when we stopped recording I had more questions than I had even started with. This time around we are talking all about women, and how our needs and behaviors affect those around us.  Alison Armstrong’s exploration of human behavior began in 1991, with her decision to study men. She says she thought it would take her a few months to learn everything worth knowing about them, and ended up being surprised by many of her findings. Over the years, her success in understanding men naturally led to studying women’s behavior and making vital connections between the two, which we’re going to dive into today. As a sought-after speaker and thought-leader, Alison has been giving millions of people access to more fulfilling lives, loving relationships, stronger families and productive organizations and her philosophy and approach are referenced and taught by other well known authors, speakers, business consultants and therapists. Here’s what I know for sure: The only place I’m interested in leading anyone is back to themselves. To the part that lives inside you and me, and every one of us – the part that knows who you are and gets to decide who gets your best. Instinct, inner knowing, gut feeling – I don’t care what you call it, but I do care that you listen to it. As Alison says, honor yourself first, or all else is lost. On this episode of TIWW I share (ok rant) some of the things we still find ourselves saying in the year 2024. These are things we’re all hearing and probably saying – mostly out of habit or because we can’t think of what else to say – but regardless of the reason we should absolutely stop saying. Immediately. Like right fucking now. We make an agreement with each other that these phrases and questions will no longer fly out of our mouths, and maybe that we’ll even encourage others to stop when they fly out of theirs. In preparation, I polled a bunch of women, and here are the things that make it into the top of our “Stop Saying That” list. Feel free to forward this episode to your moms, aunts, cousins, coworkers, friends – all the people who are still saying these things.  You don’t owe anyone explanations about your life and choices. And we can’t prevent people from saying stupid shit, as much as I wish we could. So make kindness your go-to and fuck off your sidekick. Like what you heard? A fair warning before we dive into this conversation – once you see it, you won’t be able to unsee it. Our guest is Jessica Calarco, a Sociologist and Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She’s an award winning teacher, a leading expert on inequalities in family life and education, and the author of Holding it Together: How Women Became America’s Social Safety Net. Jessica has written several books, as well as for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Atlantic, and CNN and she’s here today to talk about the downsides of women “holding it together” The time has come for us to value the essential care work that’s being done by women – not just by saying nice things or thanking moms in awards speeches, but in ways that really matter. Let’s be a country that takes care of the people who care for its people. I won’t say that being a caregiver is woman’s work, but I will say that making sure our caregivers are being taken care of absolutely is. Let’s lighten the load for them, for us, for women. When we market our business we know the outcome we want, but how many of us truly understand what our potential clients or customers want? Do we understand how they make decisions? On this episode our guest talks about the Age of Instinct and how we can and should adapt our marketing efforts in a way that actually influences people. Joining us is Leslie Zane, award-winning marketer, TEDx speaker and recognized authority in harnessing the instinctive mind to accelerate brand and business growth. Founder and CEO of Triggers, the first brand consulting firm rooted in behavioral science, Leslie champions the primacy of the instinctive mind in brand decisions. She is the author of The Power of Instinct: The New Rules of Persuasion in Business and Life and her groundbreaking contributions have deepened our understanding of human decision-making and unlocked the elusive formula for accelerating brand and business growth. How can you leverage Growth Triggers in your business, in your communities and in your life? Because let’s face it, it’s not just business owners that are trying to get other people to do what we want. Every single one of us has a brand – and we’re all out there marketing it. Ozempic is a hot topic these days. So many podcasts are bringing medical experts on their shows, but on this episode of This Is Woman’s Work I share my very own internal debate about trying Ozempic.  I have never taken any weight loss medication before, but I am considering it. There are many reasons why I want to, and many reasons why I don’t.  You’ll have to listen in to hear me share my thought process, the internal dilemma, and some considerations as I make this personal decision for myself. Because that’s ultimately what this is; a personal decision of what I feel is best for my own body. I’m not taking it lightly and no matter what I decide, it’s time we stop obsessing about the choices people make with their own bodies.  Like what you heard? Do you feel good… naked? Serious question. When you’re in the shower, getting ready, standing in front of a mirror, laying in front of, or on top of someone – do you feel good? Our guest is Chardét Ryel, a wellness entrepreneur and behavior change specialist who helps women celebrate their bodies, magnify their voices and live life boldly. After 10 years as a certified Personal Trainer and nutritionist, Chardét is now the host of The Feel Good Nakd podcast, where she shares a path to well-being that goes well beyond the scale. It has been reported that over 90% of women feel dissatisfied with their bodies so I think it’s pretty clear it’s time for a revolution that ends with us feeling good naked. And even more importantly, this revolution will require risk, courage, vision, integrity, a willingness to do hard things, and strong relationships – how do I know that? We say kindness doesn’t cost a thing, but the reality is it must cost something or we’d be choosing it more. For twenty-four years, she shared a life with Pulitzer Prize-winner Roger Ebert, and Chaz has passionately continued their work, leading numerous events while nurturing film critics, filmmakers, and technologists through the Roger Ebert Fellowship. What we need to know about raising our children to have a HEALTHY body image – because the more women who are out there with body confidence, the better.  Our guest, Lauren Magers, is a 5-foot-tall firecracker, who believes a life of happiness starts with mastery of yourself and having a system in place that guides you every day with the skills, habits, and responsibilities to be a successful human. A mother of 4 and a leader of a blended family by the age of 27, she went on a quest to uncover the wisdom to raise extraordinary humans who can thrive and be happy adults in today’s world. Creator of The Happy LifeSystem; the world’s first comprehensive parenting system built on the fundamentals of empowerment and self-mastery in a gamified way, Lauren teaches parents and children how to find joy in all they do, and love the bodies they do it in. Here’s what I know for sure: The answer does not lie in focusing on how our body looks to others.  What if we taught our kids (and also ourselves) to focus on how our body feels, what it allows and affords us to do, its health, strength and longevity. What if we practiced treating our bodies the way we want to be treated – prioritized, accepted, listened to, appreciated, and valued at the highest level. Change always begins with us.
