I can't confirm this, but what I think I understand about what the "Vitality Sensor" was meant to do is being used by Ring Fit through the infrared sensor when it takes your heartrate. They initially pitched it as a stand alone device, but it didn't have enough uses to be worth it. They since found that a sensor on a Joycon can do it. That is pure speculation though.
