Description
We are Emily (she/her) and Alex (he/his), married American expats living abroad. One day we realized we didn’t crave the same things in life that everyone around us seemed to want. We were unhappy trudging toward some perceived security and decided to do something to change it. So, in 2021, we sold our house, cars, and almost everything we owned and became location independent. We are now full-time international slow travelers negotiating how to live the dream and a regular life at the same time. We explore the ins and outs of our nomadic lifestyle at the intersection of thoughtful discussion and absurd humor.

On this episode, we talk about what led us to return to the US. It is not because our journey is over, it is because we want to set ourselves up to save money by spending the most time in the places we love best. It has not been easy to stop traveling temporarily, but we know that if we want to make travel a sustainable part of our lives, we need to start by planning better. And, let's face it, we also need to figure out how to get some funds coming in. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode we talk about our favorite destination so far - Torremolinos-Málaga, Spain in Adalucía. How much did we like it? Enough to start considering moving there! While recording from one of our least favorite destinations so far in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we cover how we have begun to feel about "biding our time" and "pussyfooting around" while we wait out our visa time away from the Schengen zone (most of Europe). We've noticed a pattern of making mistakes and feeling confused when we try to find places to fill the time. Ultimately this is a waste of our gifts and resources. So, we have decided to go back to the US and start the application process for a long-term stay visa in Spain. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode we talk about what happens when you have 100 followers on TikTok and your video ends up with 1.5 million views. We know most people's goal on social media is to go viral. It was for us! But we didn't realize just what we would have to deal with going forward. What do you do in a world where you're only as good as your last video? Most people would say try to replicate that success, but what if you don't want to? Or what if it would change your niche entirely? For us, it honestly made us question how much we really enjoyed the way we were using social media. And with the views come the mean people and idiots which can be hard to deal with for anyone. It is safe to say we went through a range of emotions and it kind of ended up not changing much! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode we answer another audience question about how we stay in touch with loved ones back home. Admittedly, we could always do better. This way of life is packed full of distractions that make the time seem to fly. Do we ever feel disconnected from what is going on with our friends and family back in the U.S. Sometimes. But what we have really noticed is that feeling connected means a lot more than just talking frequently. We all have to also feel understood in order to maintain relationships. We open up about each losing a big friendship in our lives over the last year. And it didn't have as much to do with being physically removed. It had more to do more with some people not understanding our new mindsets when it came to deciding to knowingly take a huge risk that we knew would make us happier. Hosted on Acast. In this episode we talk about our month in Dubrovnik Croatia and what really surprised us about it! Hint: we did not expect it to be so crowded in May! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode, we jump back in time almost a year to the summer of 2021. In July we became officially nomadic. How did we start our first month as nomads? Driving around the Unites States in 30 days, of course. We hit 15 different cities in 14 different states and drove over 7,000 miles over the course of one month. Listen to find out why (???) we did this, how it actually went, and what we learned from it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode we address some questions asked by our instagram friends: How do we plan our travel? How do we decide on new destinations? How far in advance do we plan? What draws us to new places? We outline our ever-evolving criteria for choosing destinations and explain the ways it can fluctuate. We used this framework as a jumping off point to discuss some of the surprising feelings that come along with planning. We talk about how hard it can be to stay present while planning an exciting new destination. It is all about seeking balance while leaving space for things to go wrong. Hosted on Acast. "How can you afford to travel full-time?" As modern day humans, we want every answer to be a formula, a series of steps to take, an amount of money to have. The very unsatisfying truth is - there is no secret. You just have to be ready to do it. On this episode, we are going to talk about how there isn’t a secret formula or magic number - meaning there isn’t a clear way to get from settled to nomadic. And, there isn’t a specific amount of money that you need. It all depends on your individual situations. We know that is a very unsatisfying answer, but our goal is to show you what can happen once you start to shift your mind in a new direction. If you can uncover new ways of thinking about living expenses, you can start to understand how we are able to do it. And maybe even how YOU can do it if it is something you have been thinking about. Hi, we are Emily and Alex - lifelong misfits who finally embraced our need for an extraordinary lifestyle when we became full-time slow travelers. The number one question we get is, "HOW are you able to do this?" Short answer - we sold our house and cars and almost everything else we own. But, we found the answer to HOW isn't actually as important as the WHY and the MOTIVATION to do it. In order to do something, you first need to establish a reason for doing it - a CAUSE to do it. If you are motivated enough to do it, you will figure out the HOW. This episode establishes WHY through a brief history of our individual backgrounds, with a focus on the more recent past when we met each other, got married, and unlocked new levels of misfittery. Please follow along on:Instagram for the visuals and daily stories @emilyandalexYouTube to view the podcast video and see shorts and vlogsTikTok where Alex does Emily's makeupPatreon for support and bonus content Hosted on Acast. If you are interested in travel or even the prospect of becoming nomadic too, we invite you to join us on This is Going Somewhere. Sometimes we will talk about practical things like costs and budgets, how we hope to make an income, how we pick accommodations, and how much research is involved. Sometimes we will talk about what day-to-day life is like in each location or what it’s really like to live out of a suitcase. We also hope to share our ideas on achieving something that may seem impossible. For us, Travel isn’t just about the seeing the big attractions and checking things off the bucket list. We find more joy in everyday life because we don’t put those kind of pressures on ourselves. We believe travel should be less qualified by other people’s opinions and more about having your own unique experiences.
