Description

The beauty industry has changed dramatically in the last 10 years.

The days of hoping your good reputation and referrals was enough to grow or maintain your clientele died out and successful stylists today need a real marketing strategy.

It's actually never been easier to grow a clientele as a hair stylist or a business as a salon owner, yet stylists are giving up or struggling more often than they are thriving in this incredible industry.

When I was first building my clientele, I realized immediately that nobody was teaching true business skills and long term strategies to stylists or salon owners. What good is a license and an entrepreneurial passion without the skills and knowledge to actually make big things happen?

The Thriving Stylist podcast is a collection of interviews from super successful but not yet famous stylists, one-on-one coaching opportunities and actionable, strategic marketing techniques that you can use in your business today to see real results.

I'm Britt Seva, Social Media & Marketing Strategist for Hair Stylists and I look forward to helping you to create a wealthy life as a stylist.

Social media marketing, business growth, economics and consumer behavior are things that I am deeply interested in and obsess over, and this episode touches on all these topics as I talk about building a thriving social media presence. Recently, there’s been a surge in viral TikTok videos and Instagram Reels where clients are speaking out against the beauty industry, particularly targeting hair stylists. In this episode, I take a closer look at one TikTok user’s perspective and how (and why) her content is resonating with both clients and stylists alike. Instead of getting defensive, it’s crucial to understand that these opinions reflect the mindset of a significant portion of today’s consumers. By embracing this alternative viewpoint, we can uncover valuable insights that will help us improve how we serve our clients and grow our businesses. As an industry, I feel that we need to get back to the art of customer service. As you know, it’s a fast-changing landscape, which is why I want to continue discussing the key shifts we’ll need to make in order to stay ahead, thrive, and meet the evolving expectations of our clients!  Do you have a question for me that you’d like answered in a future episode? If so, you're not alone because I’ve been receiving messages from stylists recently who are asking how to effectively transition back to accepting gratuities, which is why I wanted to record this episode for you today.   Yes, there is a way for you to carefully work it backwards and get back to being open to accepting gratuities, and today I will show you how!   Do you have a question for me that you’d like answered in a future episode? In a time where the cost of living is steadily increasing, salon owners face the challenging decision of whether to absorb rising expenses or pass them on to their booth renters. In this episode, we take a deep dive into a DM I received from a booth renter salon owner, as I break down her current pricing model and analyze whether raising the rent is the right move or if it’s time to consider a new salon strategy all together. I can tell you that money alone won’t solve this challenge, but marketing and really looking at what it’s going to take to create a highly desirable space that people want to work in is going to be the solution here!  Do you have a question for me that you’d like answered in a future episode? This episode is a bit more of a vulnerable one that I'm a bit nervous, and excited, to bring to you today. I’m revealing how I personally overcame burnout, as well as what I learned from researching the key symptoms of burnout, and the profound changes I have made in my health, family, and professional life.  As you’ll hear, I truly feel like I am still achieving everything that I want to achieve, but for the first time ever, I’m as close to balanced as I possibly could be. As salon owners, it's crucial to ensure that our businesses are sustainable for ourselves, our stylists, and our overall growth. But when we talk about being "fair," what does that really mean in the context of payroll? In this episode, I tackle the age-old question: “Can a salon afford to pay 45%+ commissions?, while diving deep into the numbers and exploring the significant impact payroll has on the bottom line for salon owners today. By the end of this episode, I aim to give you a new perspective on this often misunderstood topic. It’s time to move away from vague ideas of “fairness” and instead focus on calculating a compensation model that’s truly beneficial for everyone in the salon—owners and stylists alike!  Do you have a question for me that you’d like answered in a future episode? As a service-based industry, it is really easy to focus on the feels and the vibes because we are in this pressure cooker of an economy, and we start to make emotional decisions that are not good for business. I sat down to record this episode in urgency, because I want everyone to take a step back and really check the math on a piece of advice that has been going around Instagram about using a loyalty pricing model.  This is a new pricing strategy that could be incredibly detrimental to your income, so I want to work through a number of different scenarios so that you really know what’s happening if you decide to use a system like this in your business!   Do you have a question for me that you’d like answered in a future episode? Today’s episode is inspired by a message I received from an incredible Thriving Stylist podcast listener who is asking for guidance on how to build and grow her career as a commission-based stylist, while not having complete control over her career.  As a stylist, I know that you want to grow, and you need to be in an environment where growth is supported. When you’re in this type of environment you’ll be in the driver seat of your career and in control of your future, and when you’re successful, the salon owner is too - it’s a win-win partnership!  Do you have a question for me that you’d like answered in a future episode? One of the things that is most challenging for salon owners right now is attracting top tier stylists, and let me tell you, it’s because those stylists are looking for something different than they were just a few short years ago! I want to talk about how you’re operating your salon to not only attract the best stylists, but to also retain the key team members so they don’t want to make a move elsewhere, and it all starts with rethinking stylist goals and benchmarks for raises and promotions.  In this episode, I share the key performance indicators (KPIs) that will always make sense in our industry, the ones that are dated, and what to consider when it comes to your marketing, core values, and more.  I really want you to think about how you’re evaluating your team, and if you’re evaluating them on the metrics that actually determine the health of your business. If your promotion and evaluation structure is motivating you’ll have a much better chance in attracting and retaining top talent, and remember that your actions determine the outcome. So make sure that yours are aligned, and I hope this episode puts you on the right track to do so!  Do you have a question for me that you’d like answered in a future episode? The question of whether someone can afford to rent a booth or rent a suite right now is one that I hear often, but this episode is not just for commission-based stylists or employee stylists who are considering leaving their current salon. It’s also for people who are renting booths currently, because let me tell you, there is a lot to consider with this type of business model!  In this episode I’m breaking it all down, including the costs you need to consider with booth rent or suite rent, the way to be looking at taxes and write-offs, and what to keep in mind to ensure that your client is always receiving the best service possible, and not paying the price for you making a move that may not have been the right one to make at the time.  In Thrivers Society we have tools and resources to help you make these important calculations, but even if you’re not a member, today I share a lot of the allocations and guidelines to consider that will help you if you’ve been thinking about renting a booth. I hope what I share helps educate and inform you as you potentially head into a season of change and growth!  Do you have a question for me that you’d like answered in a future episode? great episode. you really hit the nail on the head about it taking time to get staff in a new location & family/friends not getting your business. friends & family didn't understand why it took 6+ months to get a stylist to come work with me. I didn't even understand until I heard this episode. I've gotten so much great advice & guidance from you. through thrivers & this podcast. keep up the good work Britt! ♥️
