EPISODE CONTENT WARNING: although we try to ensure Tits and Tea is suitable for everyone we do advise listener discretion for this particular episode. Unlike our usual episodes this particular one covers topics including murder, violence, child abuse and rape so may not be to everyone's taste. Support and guidance to issues discussed can be found at the bottom of the show notes. In this week's episode of Tits and Tea we're pretending to be a true crime podcast! We're both huge fans of true crime and decided to mix things up this week with an unusual episode! We discuss the cruel and twisted minds of Myra Hindley and Ian Brady- the Moors Murderers who brutally killed five children in the 1960's. We hope we have managed to deliver this with respect to the victims and their families and hope to raise awareness, prevent future crimes against children, support the continued searching for their remaining unfound victim and encourage the next generation to see career possibilities nowadays that would have made this case very different were they available 60 years ago. This subject is difficult but has many interesting factors and continues to be relevant despite both Hindley and Brady being deceased now.  we hope you enjoy...  As most horror happens on dark, chilly nights this week we're pairing our podcast with a pot of Dark Choc Chilli Chai tea- by Bird and Blend Tea Co. This is the second tea we're tasting from our month with this brand and we certainly didn't feel chilly for long! available via the link below: https://www.birdandblendtea.com/products/dark-choc-chilli-chai-tea?variant=37616710942881  Show Notes: Brief Timeline for reference as the episode jumps around a lot- apologies. 1961- Brady and Hindley met at work 12.07.1963- Pauline Reade (16) kidnapped and murdered by Hindley and Brady 23.11.1963- John Kilbride (12) is assaulted and murdered 16.06.1964- Keith Bennet (12) is kidnapped and murdered  26.12.1964-Lesley Ann Downey (10) is assaulted and murdered  06.10.1965- Edward Evans (17) is murdered by Ian Brady at his and Hindley's home in Greater Manchester  07.10.1965- Brady is arrested. We have not forgotten Keith Bennett. Our thoughts are with his family and we hope the recent new laws may help them finally find his remains and have a proper burial for him. We hope he can be found. This week we're putting on our dancing shoes and loving life thanks to the talent of Motown. We explore the history of Motown Records with its large collection of inspirational figures working in every level of the industry, plus we discuss Motown as a sound which has led to its description as its own genre today. This episode has everything, success, tragedy, world records, pop culture and black history with plenty of good vibes to go with it! This week was our first tea adventure with Bird and Blend Tea company, we'll be sampling their teas throughout the month of May and the first one 'Zig a zing ahh' was a delicious surprise!  Show Notes:  21mins- segregation was officially abolished in 1964 but the last school that was desecrated was Cleveland High in Mississippi in 2016! yes in 2016 there was still a school segregated by race! 27mins- black models. The first widely credited black African American model was Naomi Sims in the 1960s. The first black model didn't appear on the cover of Vogue magazine until 1974- her name was Beverly Johnson.  Fire Hydrants: Fire Hydrants in the UK are almost always underground (under a cover marked FH) 58mins- Marvin Gaye Sr didn't go to jail for killing his son. He plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was given a 6 year suspended sentence. The judge believed he shot his son in self defence and so the prison term was never carried out.  Motown Hits we recommend listening to: My Guy- Mary Wells, Please Mr Postman, Playboy- The Marvelettes,  Where did our love go, Baby love, Stop! in the name of Love, you can't hurry love- The Supremes,  License to Kill- Gladys Knight, Dancing in the Street, Heatwave, Jimmy Mack, Nowhere to Run- Martha Reeves and the Vandellas,  I heard it through the grapevine, what's going on, Let's get it on- Marvin Gaye Ain't nothing like the real thing, ain't no mountain high enough- Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye My Girl, papa was a rollin stone - The Temptations  reach out/I'll be there, I can't help myself, baby I need your lovin- The Four Tops I want you back, I'll be there- Jackson 5 Superstition, signed sealed delivered- Stevie Wonder Do you love me? the contours Shotgun- Jr Walker and all the Stars  War- Edwin Starr What becomes of the broken hearted- Jimmy Ruffin All night long- Lionel Richie Do I love you (indeed I do)- Frank Wilson This week's cuppa: Zig a zing ahh- Bird and Blend served without milk,  https://www.birdandblendtea.com/products/zig-a-zing-ahh-tea?variant=37506776432801 Sources:  Wikipedia motownmuseum.org motownrecords.com thehistorymakers.org arethafranklin.net classic.motown.com Discogs.com
This week we explore a subject close to both our hearts, Animal Activism. This episode has tangents and personal stories galore as we both love animals but it's focus is celebrating the work and life of two incredible Primatologists- Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall. Both of these women had a passion for adventure and the study of primates and dedicated their lives to conservation and improving our understanding of these animals.  This week Bella created a "Hot Cross Bunny" coffee using Beanies coffee and marshmallow bunnies which caused plenty of giggles. Show Notes:  At one point we discuss the term for a family of gorillas, it is a Troop or Band of Gorillas.  This week's cuppa: Beanies Flavour Coffee in Hot Cross Bun, add to hot water, add milk and sugar to taste. to drink like we did search for marshmallows (possibly rabbit shaped) and dip the marshmallow in the coffee, maybe you could dissolve it but we didn't test run that! Enjoy! Monkey Sanctuaries in the UK which you could visit: https://www.monkeysanctuary.org - this is owned by Wild Futures which is listed below as another recommendation if you wish to support primate care and research  https://monkeyworld.org - based in Dorset and founded by the amazing Jim Cronin, this rescue centre has its own TV show  https://monkey-forest.com - located in Trentham this sanctuary allows 140 macaques to roam free want to support monkey conservation?  https://www.wildfutures.org https://gorillafund.org/get-involved/ https://www.janegoodall.org/make-a-difference/ Sources:  Wikipedia- bios on both women https://gorillafund.org/who-we-are/dian-fossey/dian-fossey-bio/ https://www.janegoodall.org.uk Books: Gorillas in the Mist- Dian Fossey
In this week's episode we learn about some of the brave ladies who campaigned for the Women's right to Vote just over a hundred years ago. This trip into recent history uncovers some shocking truths about the gender inequalities from just a century ago! Whilst we can all agree the Suffragette movement is inspiring we take a closer look into some of the individual women who made history and paved the way for all women today. This topic is huge and if you don't know about the challenges women faced we highly recommend watching the film "suffragette" to gain a digestible yet emotive account of the events taking place in England not so long ago. We also suggest you trace back your family tree, maybe your grandma or great grandma was a suffragist, not just in the UK, women allover the world fought for their right to vote.  This week Bella chose good old Yorkshire Tea to compliment a British subject, and it sure did hit the spot. We hope you enjoy this episode!  Show Notes: Approximately 35 mins in Bella asks Katie what contraception was like in the early 1900s, her answer wasn't far wrong but after a little more research here's some extra detail: in 1910 condoms were available, but not in latex, (this wasn't used for condoms until the 1920s) so they would have been made from either thicker rubber or skin from animals. Another option was known as 'the sponge' which is actually still a method used today in the USA though it has changed somewhat. The sponge acts as a cervical blockage and was made of rubber, they were probably uncomfortable to wear during sex.    This weeks tea is: Yorkshire Tea (Decaf), you know how to do this, tea bag in your favourite cup, boil the kettle, pour into the cup, wait a bit, remove after a minute or so, add milk/dairyfree alternative if you like or drink black, add honey or sweetener to taste. slurp... bliss.  Sources:  https://www.findmypast.co.uk/blog/history/famous-suffragettes?ds_kid=39700052327871087&gclid=CjwKCAjwjuqDBhAGEiwAdX2cjxeRtbm9QazzaEcwenyhWbg-3hJnJiDzacbBHztQSjae5Wwo-4I-VBoC9bMQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds https://www.parliament.uk/about/living-heritage/transformingsociety/electionsvoting/womenvote/overview/earlysuffragist/ Wikipedia and Brittanica for all individuals  Books: Women's Suffrage: A Short History of a Great Movement- author: Millicent Garrett Fawcett we also recommend but didn't reference for this episode:  Suffragette: My Own Story: My Own Story- Author: Emmeline Pankhurst

In this week's episode of Tits and Tea we appreciate the driving force behind modern clothing for women in the unique and forever stylish fashion designer Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel. Her lifestyle was challenging and controversial, her love affairs passionate and powerful and all of this was reflected in her bold moves taking women's couture in a totally new direction. This episode is a light biography of the woman behind what is possibly the most recognisable brand in the world. Did you know a bottle of Chanel No.5 perfume is sold every 30 seconds? (pre 2020)- even if you're not a fashion connoisseur we hope you'll enjoy learning about the history of this iconic company. There seemed to be a large amount of laughter and outbursts in this episode so we hope you enjoy our random tangents too!  Bella treated Katie to a coffee this week, finding a smart play on words to link the theme and in our stylish new mugs we looked like we were heading for the most sophisticated recording yet... until we started talking. So put on something casual and enjoy listening: it's what coco would have wanted.  Show Notes:  My apologies for my French pronunciation not being so great today- my French flat mate from my days in fashion will be holding his head in his hands I'm sure! To clarify some of the names I stumbled on were:  -the ballet Chanel made the costumes for was 'Le Tren Bleu'  -her lover was Arthur Capel  -the French actress playing Chanel is Audrey Tautou  This week's Coffee is: Mokate Gold Cappuccino - chocolate flavour. They include powdered milk so you can just add hot water- stir continuously to avoid lumps, not suitable for vegans as we soon discovered.  Sources:  www.chanel.com/us/about-chanel/the-history/1910/ - the official timeline of the Chanel brand www.britannica.com www.businessoffashion.com Book: Coco Chanel The Legend and The Life- Justine Picardie

In this week's episode of Tits and Tea (recorded in March) we were inspired by Women's History Month and talk about three Warrior Queens from the distant past. We sail into battle with Cleopatra in Ancient Egypt, storm Orleans with Joan of Arc and burn down... well every city we find with Boudicca- Queen of the Iceni. We also compare their lives and challenges as rulers in their time to those of a modern day monarch. Bella's tea offering for this episode sounded like the perfect pairing- Gunpowder tea but it's explosive taste left us a little shocked! We hope you enjoy this episode! We'd love you to let us know your thoughts on any of our social platforms- we're @tandteapodcast and regularly post content relative to the episodes.  Audio heads up: there is a verbal mention of this at the beginning of the podcast but we tried to upgrade our studio set up for this episode and the result was a little audio interference leading to a sharp edit style to try and reduce the squeaking chair sound. Don't worry- we'll not be keeping this set up and the audio will improve but apologies for the few little audio issues on this episode!  Show Notes:  JACINDA ARDERN!!!!! How did we blank on the name of the amazing prime minister of New Zealand- Jacinda Ardern who will certainly be getting an episode of her own.  This weeks tea is: Ahmad Tea- London. Gunpowder Supreme Tea, loose leaf, trust us- don't let it brew too long, drink without milk but add honey/sweetener to taste.  Information sources include: Kara Cooney for National Geographic: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/culture/article/kara-cooney-queens-of-egypt-women-rule-the-world Wikipedia- Cleopatra, the Ptolemy pharaohs, Joan of Arc, Boudicca  Book: Joan of Arc: A History by Helen Castor  Book: Boudicca, Britain's Queen of the Iceni by Laurel A. Rockefeller  Book: When Women Ruled the World by Kara Cooney If you like history and comedy check out the 'You're Dead to me" podcast on BBC Sounds, Hosted by Greg Jenner from horrible histories it hilarious and informative and is one of Katie's favourites.
In our first ever episode of Tits and Tea we learn about the discovery of radium by the awesome Marie Curie, it's uses and it's dark side in the tragic story of the Radium Girls. This week's tea of choice leaves us with tingling tongues and differing tastes. Hope you enjoy! Please visit our instagram @TandTeapodcast to see the show images as discussed in the episode.  After the episode we discovered there is a memorial statue for the Radium Girls. The bronze is a young woman holding a tulip in one hand and a paintbrush in the other and we have displayed it on our Instagram feed. It is situated on the NW corner of Clinton and West Jefferson Streets in Ottawa, Illinois should you wish to visit.  Show Notes:  This week's tea is: Green Tea with Thyme, brew in hot water for 3 minutes, (add honey/sweetener to taste)  Sources:  website: https://www.livescience.com/39623-facts-about-radium.html Wikipedia- Marie Curie and the Radium Girls  Madame Curie- a Biography by Eve Curie  Book: The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women - Kate Moore  www.mariecure.org.uk
