During this month 35 years ago, the whole world threw on some Hammer pants and was captivated by the world’s most famous Bat Boy. We’re heading back to 1990 to look at the smash hit album by MC Hammer, Please Hammer Don’t Hurt Em. Hammer’s second studio album was a massive commercial success, solidifying him as one of the biggest hip-hop/pop crossover artists of the early 90’s. He also happened to be blaring consistently through the speakers of teenage Dave and Rob, who loved singing out U Can’t Touch This at the top of their lungs. Sponsored by Pepsi and Kentucky Fried Chicken, Hammer embarked on a world tour that included opening acts like En Vogue and Vanilla Ice. So this week, we’ll go track by track and re visit this iconic album of the early 90’s. Did it hold up and sound as good as we remember? Also, can Rob still do the Hammer dance? We’ll answer these questions, and so much more during this week’s show. Please Hammer Don’t Hurt is still one of the most successful and influential rap albums of all time, paving the way for pop/rap’s dominance in the early 90’s. Here Come the Hammer, uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, Here Come The Hammer!

Valentine’s Day in the 80s and 90s had a different, unique charm than today. The holiday was less digital, more personal and packed with pop culture influences. On this week’s episode, Rob and Dave look back at the candy, TV and music of the most romantic holiday in the 80s and 90s. From hand made cards, mixtapes and school dances serenaded by Wham, Valentines Day has a nostalgic feel from that time of when you just sent flowers to a loved one during class or slipped a note in their locker. By the time the 90s came around, you could send loving messages via beeper and turn in those clunky cassettes for the cleaner sound of the mixed CD. However you look back at Valentine's Day, whether with fondness or cringe, we’re going to throw some of those memories, good and bad your way and hopefully it will fill your heart with joy and happiness as we go back to Valentine’s Day this week, in the 80’s and 90s.

We’re heading back 30 years this week to look at the 100 hottest songs in America, according to radio and album sales, for this week in January 1995. 1995 was diverse, reflecting a wide range of genres that dominated the charts and defined the cultural landscape of the mid 1990’s. Styles that were popular were grunge/alternative rock, Britpop to include bands like Oasis, Blur and Pulp, Pop Music, Hip Hop and R&B, Country music and the electronic/dance/house style. This week Rob and Dave look at the famous Billboard Hot 100 and choose our favorites from the best 100 songs at that time in 1995, in the US. Some will rock, some will spark nostalgia and some may have you remember, why in the heck was that popular? Any way you look at it, we’ll provide you with a great flashback to January of 1995 and have you remembering everything great about the mid 90’s. In short, 1995 was a year of musical variety, with rock, pop, hip hop and dance music thriving simultaneously. This eclectic mix reflected the growing segmentation of music audiences and the globalization of musical tastes. Gotta make that money man!

The 1980s were a golden era for pop music, often celebrated for its unique blend of creativity, innovation, and cultural impact. But what made the music of the time so awesome. Well, you had iconic artists and personalities, genre blending creativity, the synthesizer revolution, unforgettable melodies, MTV and a timeless appeal. The standard most artists could point to that illustrated their popularity was the Billboard Hot 100. Charting on the Hot 100 could boost the artist and make them more famous than they could have imagined. However, there were times that songs were on the radio or MTV and somehow didn’t make it onto the Hot 100. This week, we’ll look at some songs that are memorable of the 80’s but somehow didn’t make it onto America’s most popular music chart. Did those songs disappear or remain iconic? We’ll take a look at this as the decade of the 80s wasn’t just about creating music, it was about creating an experience. The 1980s left a legacy of songs that remain iconic, energetic, and as said before, timeless.

In the new world of playlists and streaming music, the youth of today will never know the painstaking steps that were needed to formulate a mixed cassette tape. Whether you were building the tape for a friend, a family member or that special someone, it was a process that took a lot of time, patience and thought to make sure the songs you selected were just right. Through a combination of borrowing tapes or recording off the radio you would put your masterpiece together and then wait anxiously to see what their reaction would be. So this week Rob is traveling back 37 years to the great year of 1988 and putting together a 90 minute mixtape that will show off his musical abilities. He will channel his 11 year old self and put together a list of songs that would surely impress anyone in 1988. So Dave and the audience this week will sit back and enjoy the music of 1988 and try to figure out if this would have been a successful mix that someone else would have really liked listening to. From Richard Marx and Bobby Brown to Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli, we’ll feel like we're back in the great year of 1988.

This week on Totally 80s and 90s Recall, Dave, Rob, and Kurt are joined by special guests Brad and Sean to dive into the wild world of 1980s comedy movies with a March Madness–style 16-team bracket. From slapstick to satire, the guys break down some of the funniest and most quotable films of the decade, pitting classics head-to-head until only two comedies reigns supreme. Each matchup sparks laughs, heated debate, and plenty of nostalgia as the crew tries to decide which flick really captured the comedic spirit of the 80s.
The bracket is stacked with heavy-hitters like National Lampoon’s Vacation, Stripes, and Coming to America, each bringing its own brand of outrageous humor and iconic performances. But the competition doesn’t stop there—parody powerhouses like Spaceballs square off against teen comedy staples such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The panel wrestles with tough questions: does a cult classic deserve to topple a box office giant? Should quotability matter more than critical acclaim? And just how much does nostalgia play into picking a true champion?
With Brad and Sean stirring the pot and adding their own favorites into the mix, the bracket becomes a hilarious walk down memory lane. Whether it’s Chevy Chase bumbling his way through family road trips, Eddie Murphy redefining comedy stardom, or Matthew Broderick convincing us to skip school in style, this episode is packed with laughter, debate, and plenty of “you had to be there” 80s moments. It’s the ultimate comedy showdown, and only two films can survive the bracket madness!

This week on Totally 80s & 90s Recall, the podcast crew revisited the 1990 classic Kindergarten Cop, and it proved to be a surprisingly entertaining mix of action and comedy. Arnold Schwarzenegger stepping into a classroom full of energetic kids creates a delightfully oddball scenario, balancing tough-guy antics with heartwarming moments. The movie’s humor, combined with its over-the-top premise, makes it an engaging trip back to early 90s cinema.
Beyond the laughs, the film captures the quirks of the era, from its style to its tone, and manages to keep viewers invested despite its improbable story. Its charm lies in the collision of chaos and comedy, with memorable performances that have helped it endure as a nostalgic favorite. In the end, Kindergarten Cop remains a fun, feel-good snapshot of 90s entertainment that’s still enjoyable to revisit today.

For the week ending August 27, 1983, the Billboard Hot 100 was loaded with some of the most iconic songs of the decade. At the top, The Police were wrapping up their legendary run with “Every Breath You Take” before yielding to a new wave of contenders. Hot on their heels, Eurythmics’ synth-driven “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” was climbing fast, while Michael Sembello’s “Maniac” was burning up the charts thanks to the Flashdance craze. The rest of the Top 10 offered a mix of pure 80s variety: Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard for the Money”, Men at Work’s “It’s a Mistake”, and Taco’s quirky “Puttin’ on the Ritz” stood alongside classic rock staples like Stevie Nicks’ “Stand Back” and Billy Joel’s “Tell Her About It.” Further down the list, radio was buzzing with Lionel Richie, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, and Journey—all proving that pop, rock, R&B, and new wave were all thriving together.
On this week’s podcast, Rob and Dave will dive into the chart and each pick a personal favorite. The fun twist is in their contrasting styles: Dave leans into the big anthems and timeless pop moments, while Rob often digs a little deeper, spotlighting tracks that might not have hit No. 1 but still capture the spirit of the era. Together, they’ll break down what makes these songs stand out—whether it’s the infectious hooks, the MTV-ready videos, or the way the tracks still hold up decades later. By the end, listeners will get not only a countdown snapshot of late-summer ’83, but also two very different perspectives on which hits truly defined that moment.

The early ’90s gave us some of the most iconic music of the decade, but 1993 and 1994 also produced a surprising collection of misfires that have aged like milk in the sun. From overproduced follow-up singles that couldn’t capture the magic of their predecessors to novelty tracks that made listeners question their life choices, these years proved that even in the golden age of grunge, hip-hop, and R&B, the charts had plenty of room for the ridiculous. Whether it was a syrupy ballad aimed at reclaiming past glory, a children’s song inexplicably turned into a global hit, or a cartoon theme song dragged into the pop charts, the bad was every bit as memorable as the good — just for all the wrong reasons
In this episode, Rob and Dave share their picks for the best of the worst songs from 1993 and 1994 — the tunes that topped “most annoying” lists, baffled critics, and left fans scratching their heads. These are the tracks that tried to ride trends and wound up derailing entirely, the guilty pleasures you wouldn’t admit to liking, and the curiosities that live on as cautionary tales in pop culture history. If you’ve ever wondered how something can be both a chart success and an absolute mess, these two years have all the proof you need — and Rob and Dave are here to break it all down with equal parts nostalgia and playful mockery

This week on Totally 80’s and 90’s Recall, Rob and Dave are going way back—to the years they were born! Dave is diving into the Billboard Hot 100 of 1976, and Rob’s taking on 1977, but with a twist: each of them has handpicked their favorite 10 songs from those charts—not necessarily the biggest hits, but the ones that stuck with them as they grew up through the late ’70s and into the heart of the ’80s. It’s personal, nostalgic, and full of deep cuts and timeless classics.
But the music didn’t exist in a vacuum—pop culture was fueling the fire. Think Rocky and Saturday Night Fever changing the game, CB radios and bell bottoms in full swing, the rise of FM radio and variety shows like Donny & Marie or The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour keeping families glued to the tube. Disco balls lit the dance floors, punk was brewing in the underground, and AM radio was a blend of soul, rock, funk, and soft pop magic.
Expect plenty of storytelling, musical surprises, and the kind of passionate debate only two pop culture buffs can bring. From disco grooves and soft rock jams to early signs of the sounds that would dominate
the ’80s, these songs weren’t just hits—they were part of the soundtrack to Rob and Dave’s childhoods.

In this week’s episode of Totally 80’s and 90’s Recall, Dave and Rob dive deep into the flannel-wrapped world of one of the most iconic bands of the ‘90s—Pearl Jam. From the explosive arrival of Ten in 1991 to their fierce stance against the mainstream and Ticketmaster, Pearl Jam helped shape the grunge movement while carving their own path through the decade’s chaotic music scene. We’re talking raw emotion, blistering guitar riffs, and a frontman in Eddie Vedder whose voice became the battle cry for a generation disillusioned with polished pop and hair metal. Their blend of punk, classic rock, and introspective lyrics created an authentic sound that resonated with millions.
Dave and Rob break down the band’s cultural footprint, including their role in the Seattle sound explosion and their refusal to play the fame game. Of course, we couldn’t talk about Pearl Jam without giving our Essential Top 10 Pearl Jam Songs of the ‘90s—the ones that defined the decade, made us crank up the volume, and still hit just as hard today. Whether you're a longtime fan or just jumping into their discography, this episode is a tribute to one of the most important bands of the era. Plug in, turn it up, and let’s relive the sound that rocked the ‘90s.

This week, Rob and Dave are throwing caution (and their notes) to the wind as they go live on Totally 80’s and 90’s Recall for a wild ride through the Billboard charts of the 1980s! That’s right—no scripts, no prep, just two dudes, a mic, and a time-traveling love affair with the greatest decade in music history. For this live episode, they'll spin the wheel (okay, probably just pick randomly) to choose a year, then dive headfirst into the hits, the misses, and the glorious one-hit wonders that defined it. Expect spontaneous singalongs, deep-cut debates, and Rob pulling out obscure trivia like he’s got Casey Kasem on speed dial.
From 1981’s synth-soaked anthems to 1987’s hair-metal dominance, Rob and Dave will relive the magic and madness of each chart-topping year, all while listeners join in on the fun in real time. Will they agree on the best track of ’84? Will Rob finally admit that Steve Winwood is the Beast? Will Dave go on a five-minute rant about how overrated U2 is? There’s only one way to find out—tune in, jump in the chat, and relive the 80s like you’re back in your bedroom recording songs off the radio.

Oh, Jerry Maguire—the 1996 rom-com/sports drama hybrid we didn’t know we needed but now can’t live without. Tom Cruise plays a slick sports agent who has a midlife moral crisis, writes a manifesto (sorry, mission statement), gets immediately fired, and walks out of the office with nothing but a goldfish and Renée Zellweger. Meanwhile, Cuba Gooding Jr. yells “Show me the money!” enough times to win an Oscar and become a pop culture icon overnight. It’s a movie that gave us more catchphrases than a 90s infomercial and somehow convinced us that an awkward kid with spiky hair whispering “Did you know the human head weighs 8 pounds?” was adorable.
This week on Totally 80’s and 90’s Recall, Dave, Rob, and the movie hound Kurt dig into the world of agents, ethics, and emotionally confused football players. They ask the important questions: Was Jerry a visionary or just bad at his job? Was Rod Tidwell actually worth the contract? And how did Jonathan Lipnicki steal every single scene he was in? From Bruce Springsteen's “Secret Garden” to the best/worst use of a "you complete me" line ever uttered, the guys break down the laughs, the love, and the late-90s awkwardness in a way only they can. So grab your memo, your fish, and your mentor’s gold card—you’re gonna want to hear this.

A Few Good Men is a powerhouse military courtroom drama directed by Rob Reiner, starring Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, and Demi Moore. The story follows hotshot Navy lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Cruise), who’s known for cutting plea deals rather than seeing the inside of a courtroom. But when two Marines are accused of murdering a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay, Kaffee is pushed into a case that’s way bigger than he’s used to. As he digs deeper—alongside Lt. Cmdr. JoAnne Galloway (Moore)—they uncover a dangerous code of silence, a culture of obedience, and the possible involvement of high-ranking officials, including the fearsome Col. Nathan R. Jessup (Nicholson). The tension builds to a legendary courtroom showdown that gave us one of the most iconic movie lines of the '90s: "You can't handle the truth!"
The film is a blend of sharp dialogue, big personalities, and moral complexity, making it one of the defining dramas of the early ’90s. Cruise brings his signature intensity, while Nicholson delivers a performance that’s equal parts terrifying and mesmerizing. The cast also includes Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, and Cuba Gooding Jr. in a small but memorable role. A Few Good Men doesn’t just serve military courtroom drama—it dives into themes of honor, duty, and justice in a rigid chain-of-command environment. It’s exactly the kind of film Dave, Rob, and Kurt can sink their teeth into on Totally 80’s and 90’s Recall, packed with quotable lines, powerhouse performances, and that unmistakable early-'90s prestige film vibe.

This week on Totally 80s and 90s Recall, Dave, Rob, and Kurt are firing up the engines and diving into Days of Thunder (1990), the slick, high-speed NASCAR drama that brought Top Gun-style adrenaline to the racetrack. Directed by Tony Scott and produced by the powerhouse duo of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the film stars Tom Cruise as Cole Trickle, a fearless but raw driver trying to prove himself on the NASCAR circuit. Backed by veteran crew chief Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall) and team owner Tim Daland (Randy Quaid), Cole navigates the fierce world of stock car racing, intense rivalries, and a life-changing crash that forces him to confront his own limitations. Nicole Kidman also makes her debut as Dr. Claire Lewicki, a neurosurgeon who becomes both Cole’s caretaker and love interest.
In their breakdown of the film, the guys rev up the nostalgia by exploring the movie’s iconic race scenes, killer Hans Zimmer score, and the romance that sparked between Cruise and Kidman’s characters. With plenty of behind-the-scenes trivia, quotable lines ("Rubbin’, son, is racin’"), and some good old-fashioned '90s movie magic, Dave, Rob, and Kurt put the pedal to the metal in revisiting this cult favorite. Buckle up—this episode is racing straight into your ears!

This week, Dave, Rob, and Kurt (with a special guest) strap on their bandoliers and dive headfirst into the over-the-top, protein-shake-fueled madness of 1980s action movies—where subtlety was for side characters and every explosion was a valid plot device. This was the golden era when Arnold Schwarzenegger could wipe out an entire jungle cartel with just a grimace, Sylvester Stallone turned mumbling into an art form (while bench-pressing Cold War tensions), and Jean-Claude Van Damme split-kicked his way into our hearts—and sometimes into slow-motion for no reason.
These were movies where bullets never ran out, henchmen arrived in unlimited waves, and the only thing more ripped than the heroes were their sleeves. The 80s taught us that world peace could be achieved with a machine gun and a killer one-liner. So join the crew as they salute the action gods, relive the chaos, and ask the important questions—like are we, now in 2025, too old for this sh**!!
