Description

Travelling Through Conversation came to me whilst living in a backpackers’ hostel. Most nights I’d sit at the bar, drink a beer and meet strangers from around the world.

One conversation that stood out was with a chap called Zé from Brazil. He told me how he’d got a milk box carton tattooed on his arm – a drunken moment with friends led him to the idea. Now we’ve both agreed, when I visit Zé in South America, I’ll get the same tattoo on my arm.

It’s moments like these, which make me want to speak with people. Each episode is a conversation. Between myself and a stranger from a different country. The goal is to communicate with them all and to see what happens.

Travel, like an adventure, often begins with a plan for day one—but after that, who knows where the journey will lead? Traveling Through Conversation has followed a similar path. Now, twenty recordings in, I’m thrilled to unveil our official logo! It’s been beautifully brought to life by the talented Ludi, who also stars in the France episode. My favorite detail? The way Morocco and Spain lean in as if to share a kiss. What catches your eye? Do you have a favorite feature?

The Argentinian man in this episode went out one Sunday and ended up traveling across Europe. He's still at it. How?

I’ve been robbed a few times while travelling, but the second time it happened, I was actually happy. Why? I learned from my mistakes the first time around. June, what do you do when you get mugged?

Rome - a capital hotspot for people like us, and probably your next-door neighbour too. But what do you do when your neighbour's actually from Rome? You record a podcast together. Meet mine - his name’s Richard. And yes, you guessed it, this episode wasn't built in a day.

I once had a girlfriend who left me for India, and since we’ve lost touch, I can’t ask her about South Asia. A few years later, I embark on my own adventure. Today, I’m joined by Aishwarya, who’s frequently Out of Office. We chat about the unpredictability of travel and dive into whether India is a safe place for women to live or visit. Without my ex’s perspective, I’m especially eager to hear from a true native instead!

The closest I’ve ever come to Belgium was nearly booking a flight to Antwerp during a dissertation meltdown. Thankfully, I passed my degree, but I never made the trip to Western Europe. Four years later, I’ve forgotten my thesis title, but I’ll definitely remember the name of today’s guest — even with the 8.4% beer we’re drinking. Meet Julie.

Standing at six foot six, Peter is the kind of towering presence you’d typically encounter at a festival. But today, he's here on the podcast instead. With a contagious laugh and a tale to tell, he’s the first Dutch bloke to bring a tear to my eye. So, settle in and get ready for a memorable episode!

I’m on holiday in Torquay, and as family trips go, this one’s been unique—I’ve ended up doing some Acro-Yoga around the corner from the hotel with a sex coach from Poland. Since this is a travel podcast, is sex like travel?

When I think of Turkish experiences, I can confidently say I’ve had a kebab, a haircut, and maybe even throw in a cheeky turkey sandwich - why not? But for someone from Turkey now living in the U.K., what still connects them to their roots?

This time last year, I rubbed shoulders with Oasis’s frontman in an airport lounge before flying to the U.S. for a three-month adventure. A year later, I’m with a Thai Poet, hunting for a pub on Songkran, the Thai New Year. First round’s on me. As you were.

Australia, the land down under, where the beer flows and men chunder. I’ve never been, and before my hostel days, I can’t recall ever having a conversation with an Australian. My knowledge was limited to kangaroos, Australian-themed bars in the UK like Walkabout, and a certain iconic song that seems to be passed down through generations. Now that I’ve got an Aussie on the podcast, I can finally ask the big questions, like, "Do you actually drink Fosters, mate?"

Two cups of bubble tea. One for me and one for a Taiwan Scuba Diver. I’m about to be initiated into the Taiwanese culture but don’t be fooled, despite the name, there are actual balls in the drink! Now, I'm curious, if you live in Taiwan, are you from China?

Mexico. I’ve been there before - twice, actually. Both trips were unplanned but turned into real adventures. You can never predict what might happen. On my first visit, I ended up with a nosebleed after eating an insanely spicy taco. The second time, I got stuck - they wouldn’t let me leave the country! Now, as I gear up for my next journey, I’m joined by a Mexican Entrepreneur who graciously answers questions like, "Will I die if I go to Mexico?"
I didn’t expect anything to come out of my first afternoon-tea experience other than a ham sandwich and a scone, but the man who served me had an accent mixed between Brummie and something else, I had to ask what it was, and that conversation took me to the Czech Republic.

I haven’t spoken a word of French since school. Now in 2019, I’m with a French artist stuffing my face with ham and egg crêpes. It’s also given me the opportunity to test out my knowledge of the French alphabet, which my teacher used to make me sing. I wonder what else I can remember.
Joey, Johnny (Peel), and Jimmy were the three lads I lived with at University. Our time there was quite eventful: someone stole Jimmy's cheesecake, broke the freezer, caused the roof to collapse, and, to top it all off, Jimmy lost the house keys. As a result, we barely got any of our deposit back. Despite the chaos, we had a blast with a sports podcast called Four Up Top, with Jimmy as the Music Producer. So, I asked him to work his magic once more for this podcast.

Madness. An Egyptian Engineer has taken me to a British pub for a mocktail. Buy one, get one free on Bubble Gum Berry. Before I record any country, we always meet somewhere first, to help break the ice and get to know each other. Not only is this my first non-alcoholic cocktail, but I’ve just discovered it’ll also be my first time hitting the record button in the dark!

At the front door of this house, I’m welcomed by a Greek Minimalist, while the melodic strains of a bouzouki and a Geordie accent blend together, reverberating down the street. Is this a slice of Greece or a corner of Newcastle? I’m left delightfully confused.

It’s the middle of winter. I’m sat in a back garden in Sunderland, England, with a Bulgarian Adventurer. Both of us fueled by chai and homemade vodka (not one shot, but two.) We only met online two hours ago. Now, I’m at her house.
