Triple Tune Challenge

Are you curious about music and songs? Ever wonder what connects songs from different eras, genres and levels of popularity? Who performed on the song, who was the engineer, the composer, the producer, what is the theme and meaning of the song, where was it recorded and more. Triple Tune Challenge is the podcast that challenges you to find connections between songs. Each episode we play 3 songs with something in common for you to identify. The answer will be revealed in the following episode, prior to playing another set of 3 songs. So throw on your cans and play along.

Episode 3

Welcome to episode 3 of Triple Tune Challenge. I'm Eric Marvin, you're host with the most, although I'm not sure what I have the most of. Regardless, I do know that this episode will be classic as we'll hear from some of my favorite artists, Barbra Streisand, Steely Dan and Mr. Henry Mancini.Last week on Triple Tune Challenge we heard Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog - Nothin' But A G Thang, War - Lowrider, and Justin Bieber - Hold On. Whether the challenge was too difficult, or the fact that this is a fledging podcast with scant few listeners, no one identified the correct connection, that the official videos for all three songs were filmed in and featured Long Beach. I realize now that was a tough challenge, but bear with me as I continue to tweak the show in hopes of finding the right balance of difficulty and fun.Over the course of pulling that challenge together, I discovered a lot about Long Beach and turns out, it's a pretty cool place. Like most large cities, there are a number of famous people that call it home, Nat King Cole, Nicholas Cage, and Fatty Arbuckle to name a few. But to me the most impressive is, Albert P. Halfhill The Father of the Tuna Packing Industry, who not only perfected the tuna packing process, but is credited with coining the term, "chicken of the sea" Long Beach has been the backdrop for many famous movies, like, Iron Man, Transformers 2 and 3, and Coach Carter and who of us didn't know that Woodrow Wilson High School was used to shoot Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Squeakquel.I'd like to thank the City of Long Beach for their cooperation with this week's answer. This week's challenge songs are, Steely Dan's - Aja from 1977, Barbra Streisand singing Grandma's Hands released in 1974 and Henry Mancini's - Medley: Love's Theme/TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia), from the film of the same title, from a 1972 compilation. When you have an answer, send it via email to tripletunechallenge@gmail.com. Episode 2

On episode one of the show, we heard Billie Eilish's Bad Guy, Duran Duran's Hungry Like the Wolf and Tom Jones' What's New Pussycat. One listener guessed the connection is the songs each contain animal references in their lyrics or titles. I hadn't considered that when putting together the episode, but I've spoken to the judges and they've ruled the answer acceptable. Great job Diane from Oregon.  We did receive a submission noting the intended connection, each of the artists also performed a Bond song that charted on the Billboard Hot 100.  Billie Eilish with No Time To Die which peaked at #16. Duran Duran had a #1 hit with A View to a Kill, and Tom Jones reached #25 with Thunderball.Being selected to compose or perform a Bond theme song is quite the honor, and the roster of performers over the 26 songs in the franchise reads like a "who's who" of popular artists of their era, including Nancy Sinatra, Louie Armstrong, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Sheena Easton, Rita Coolidge, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, and Adele. Of those 26 Bond songs fifteen made the Billboard Hot 100 chart, eight made the top ten and four reached the top 5. Speaking of the Billboard Hot 100, the songs lined up for this week have each charted themselves, starting with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog's Nuthin' But A G Thang topping out at #2 in 1993, War's Lowrider, release in 1975 hit #7 and Justin Bieber's Hold On made it to #20 in 2021.When you think you know the connection, send it via email to tripletunechallenge@gmail.com. We can be found at tripletunechallenge.com and on Facebook and Instagram as TripleTuneChallenge. You can also revisit all the songs played on the Podcast by visiting our Spotify playlist - Triple Tune Challenge. Thanks for listening and see you next week when the connection will be revealed.
