Idea Candy and Showmax recently released a documentary film about one of South Africa's most notorious unresolved serial crimes. The Station Strangler explores the disappearance and subsequent murder of 22 boys from Mitchells Plein from the 1980s until a face was given to the terrifying phantom. With Norman Simons now out on parole for the single murder he was convicted of, this film uncovers the deep pain that still exists around this case. In this episode I speak with the director, Nadine Cloete about her experience in delving into this case which was so close to home. I don’t know about you, but I really love fiction and audio drama podcasts. It’s like a watching a movie, but with your ears. So, listening to a movie, I guess - but way better. And although South Africa’s podcast landscape has grown hugely in the last five years that I’ve been doing this, we haven’t yet ventured into fictionalised podcasts and that wait is over! South Africa’s first audio drama podcast has hit the air…um…internet waves and it is so good! So good in fact that I wanted to share a promo for it here in the feed to help get more listeners to it because I’d really like to see more of these. It’s also a really important story - the basis of which is actually a real life tale. Listen to Stripped:

In today's episode I have the incredible pleasure of chatting with one of the world's most successful crime fiction writers, Deon Meyer. Meyer's books have enthralled and captivated readers in South Africa for decades and our conversation reveals how that often entails getting closer to real crime than one might think. This interview was first published on Jonathan Ball's Pagecast podcast. To hear more interviews with South African authors, follow Pagecast wherever you listen to True Crime South Africa. When a woman arrives at the home of a rural plot owner begging for assistance to take her own life, a tale of filicide unfolds unlike anything seen in South African courts before. Did a combination of medication result in the death of two young children? Or was the motive much less complicated than that? Introducing a NEW investigation from the BBC’s World of Secrets podcast: The Apartheid Killer. All the victims were black and the youngest was just 12 years old. Some relatives are still searching for the graves. They were killed during a three-year bloodbath in the 1980s, in the South African city of East London – by one person. He killed so many, he lost count. It has been 30 years since the white supremacist apartheid regime crumbled. The unresolved trauma of this time has cast a long shadow across a nation. In piecing together this story, the new season of World of Secrets exposes the disturbed past and racial injustices of South Africa itself.

I'm glad I was able to find a woman's podcast told from another country told with care and intelligence very refreshing thank you
From the river to the sea ✌🍉
I listen to this podcast every week and I have listened to all the podcasts. The podcasts are well researched and the host presents it really well. I am a true crime follower in general, but this is my favourite true crime show, as the host is to the point.
Sounds well researched. I would be more likely to continue listening if there wasn't 5-6 minutes of adverts and admin at the start. Perhaps there's a different format that can be explored?
Great episode. I love the historical ones.
a contender for the worst podcast name methinks?
Hi. Enjoying your content. I'm just a bit confused as to why no mention is made of the boy who admitted to this murder and why his rendition of what happened is being disqualified. He had nothing to gain by lying about any of the events of that evening.
impressed by this Judge
shocking!
He was obsessed with psychopaths, the reproductive system and violence...the first and last are old hats but "reproductive system"?
Fritz' "addled mind" had nothing to do with him planning on killing his parents; against every sober person's belief, substance abuse doesn't turn you into a murderous psychopath, it merely brings out what's already wrong with you psychologically! He felt so entitled to his parent's money that being kicked out enraged him enough to plan their demise....albeit executing this plan was something that he couldn't do, due of squeamishness, mind you, not morals or love.
I am skeptical that the motive of this crime was entirely financial. it could have been. but I am skeptical that she owed the dude money already and then went to ask to borrow more money. is it true that she "owed money to him" or is that just something he said. I think he lured her there because he had a plan to do something to her. I think he possibly had the other guy there, by pretext, to help him after the fact. maybe the crime was not financially motivated, but sexually motivated. he killed her because he became angry that she did not do what he wanted. there is tons of precedent for that all over the world. maybe there was more than one motivation. and the financial part of it is that he lured her there to get some and then steal her car to sell.
The fact that Swartz wasn't found to be a dangerous offender due to him being under 18 is ridiculous. Whoever introduced the bill should've left some space for exemptions to be worked into the legislative framework.
That reporter who sent Toni the "my condolences" text must have known that, this early on, the family of Jayne had not been notified of her death. Whoever tipped them off should be ashamed of themselves....it's a disgrace what the media is willing to do for a front page story.
There's a sweet picture on the Daily Mail online, of pygmy hippo baby Prince Harry, kissing Toni Inggs who is laying on the floor beside it, smiling (taken in 2012). 🔵 https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2121539/Prince-Harry-hippo-gives-happy-handler-loving-lick.html?ito=native_share_article-masthead If this link is not working in your version of Castbox, click on my profile pic and go to "community" - this one does!
Thank you for telling the victim's story Nicole
This is so incredibly sad. My heart goes out to both families. Unfortunately, this horror and imbalance is all over the world. They are in my prayers.
I like this podcast. love that they is no music playing while she is talking.
This case reminds me of „India's Daughter“, 22-year old med student Jyoti Singh, who was viciously attacked in a similar way in South Delhi on the 16th of December, 2012. Rape simply doesn't cover the atrocities done to both young women; the victim-blaming done in Jyoti's case was met with protests of thousands of outraged fellow students, both male and female.
The "experts" say that blacking out from Heroin is impossible - I say having sex, as a man who used for close to a decade, is impossible.
