On October 7, 2022, a young woman appeared on a neighbor's front porch pleading for help, saying she had just escaped her kidnapper who had murdered two of her friends.
Update: This case will go into re-trial in October 26, 2026, in Clay County Circuit Court before Judge David Chamberlain, with a pre-trial conference set for October 9, 2026. The case has expanded from kidnapping and rape to include a murder charge, and the investigation into whether there are additional victims appears to remain ongoing.

When John Hayes called 911 on August 30, 2026, he told the dispatcher, "I don't see her anywhere. She must have just escaped." He says it happened in a split second; the girl couldn't speak, so she couldn't call out, ask for help, or identify herself. For the next 22 hours, hundreds of searchers combed the South Carolina coastline for 5-year-old Saylor Hayes. Once she was found, investigators say everything they thought they knew about her disappearance began to fall apart.
