Today’s episode begins with a clarification concerning Mica’s divorce attorney Regina Ward and the settlement terms reached between JP Miller and Mica’s family this past summer. Also on the show, in a press conference in June 2024, Regina Ward shared a list of abuses that Mica allegedly experienced at the hands of Pastor JP Miller … alleged abuses that mirror a proposed coercive control law that failed three times to make it out of state legislative committee. In that press briefing, Regina said that had this law been enacted before Mica’s death there was a possibility it could have saved her life. Mandy and Liz take another look at the proposed law and a provision that seems like it would have protected JP more than it would have protected Mica. Plus, JP is up to his old antics and has filed 10 new civil lawsuits against an assortment of protesters and content creators. JP — demonstrating once again that he thinks the police work directly for him — wanted the department to investigate Heather for Mica’s death because she is the mother of the man Mica was hanging out with on March 11 and the man who JP later called and berated.  Mandy and Liz share the first installment of the texts and emails that came back from reporter Beth Braden’s FOIA for communications between JP and the police. Less than three years before Mica Francis’ body was found in a North Carolina swamp after her alleged suicide, there was another strange death near Solid Rock at Market Common, the Myrtle Beach church that belonged to Mica’s husband Pastor JP Miller. That’s the death of Chris Skinner, the 41-year-old quadriplegic man who was married to the woman JP was allegedly having an affair with at the time — the same woman JP has routinely been photographed with since Mica’s death in April. Chris was found in his wheelchair at the bottom of his neighborhood pool. Medical records from that day say her husband — pastor JP Miller — called one of Mica’s mental health providers at 10 a.m. to say that Mica had stolen JP’s credit card, snuck out of the house while he was sleeping, gone ot Dick’s Pawn Shop that morning, purchased a gun, received a lesson on how to use it and then tried shooting herself in their front yard. Investigative reporters Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell celebrate Alex Murdaugh’s biggest loss yet … one that will effectively keep him behind bars for the rest of his life. Also on the show, Buster Murdaugh triples down on his defamation claims against Netflix and Hampton County reporter Michael Dewitt. In a federal filing this week, Buster argues that — though he left out the context of Dewitt’s words in his original filing in South Carolina — including all of Dewitt’s interview on “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” actually helps strengthen his claim. Plus, the drama outside Solid Rock Ministries church in Myrtle Beach has NOT calmed down. On Sunday, pastor JP Miller was accused of assaulting a protester dressed as Jesus, and protesters were accused of harassing JP’s alleged paramour by shouting “demeaning” comments at her.  Mandy and Liz also took a look at the FOIA logs for Myrtle Beach and Horry County police departments to see who was seeking information on Mica Francis. And what they found was shocking: Before her death, Mica was seeking public information from the police … and they gave her next to nothing. Last week Myrtle Beach pastor JP Miller and his attorney Russell B. Long filed a defamation complaint against a paralegal who said he called her law office in search of a divorce attorney who could “destroy” his wife, Mica Francis, whose body was found in a North Carolina swamp last April. Not only is it laughable that JP believes this hurts his already-bad reputation, the complaint doesn’t articulate that anything the paralegal stated as fact is untrue. Also on the show, a newly released report from Horry County Police Department shows that JP Miller was accused of bestiality this past June. What?!?! We'll share all that we know about this public document and our ongoing fight with Horry County to release all that can be according to SC state law. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue their coverage of two appeal hearings heard last week in the case of thrice-accused rapist Bowen Turner and his sweetheart plea deal.  Today. listeners will get to hear Part Two of the Chloe Bess interview, where she talks about what it was like being in the courtroom and on her thoughts about how the system continues to coddle and make excuses for Bowen, who sexually assaulted her as a teenager.  Also on the show, Mandy and Liz begin sharing their findings from the stack of medical records leaked to them in the Mica Francis case, starting with the first few months of 2018, the year of Mica’s first alleged suicide attempt. From the get-go, Mica’s marriage to Myrtle Beach pastor JP Miller was defined by a questionable mental health diagnosis that continues to plague her memory to this day, five months after her death. The Bowen Turner case in South Carolina has been one for the outrage records. Listeners across the country have been horrified as they watched the justice system coddle Bowen over and over while the thrice-accused rapist gave his second, third and fourth chances the middle finger. But now, something good could come from the case — a case that included the horrific bullying of Dallas Stoller, one of his accusers. Bullying that resulted in her death.  Something good might come from Bowen’s 2022 sham of a plea deal hearing — orchestrated by a cunning lawyer-legislator, executed by a prosecutor blinded by ambition and approved by a Good Ole Boy judge. Change might be coming because of an appeal filed by another one of Bowen’s accusers, Chloe Bess. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell take a look at the historic filing and what went down during oral arguments in front of the state Court of Appeals on Tuesday. The state’s victims bill of rights affords victims the opportunity to be heard in court. In trials, victims can testify before a verdict is rendered — before a potential conviction. But in plea deals they’ve been restricted to being heard only after the judge has accepted the pleading — only AFTER the conviction.
