Body dysmorphia, the "inner man," and what the Bible says about identity: Paul's inward man vs. Freud and Jung's inner self. Psychology asks "Who am I?" Paul asks "Whose am I?"In this episode, we use body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) as a starting point to compare how modern psychology and Pauline theology understand the inner person. Both agree there is an invisible inner life of motives, desires, and identity. They disagree sharply on what's wrong with us and how we change. We look at:- What body dysmorphic disorder is, and how an ideal or loathed self-image can detach from reality- Paul's "inward man" in Romans 7:22, 2 Corinthians 4:16, and Ephesians 3:16- Freud's id, ego, and superego, and Jung's shadow, archetypes, and "abyss of the inner world"- Why introspection helps but can turn into isolation and self-absorption- Rogers, Maslow, and the push toward self-actualization and authenticity- Cognitive dissonance vs. Paul's war in the members (Romans 7)- Dysfunction vs. sin: two different diagnoses of the human problem- Insight vs. repentance, union with Christ, and mortifying the flesh (Romans 6)- Why the goal is Christ-likeness, not a more authentic self- How to use introspection and Christian counseling without stopping at insightKEY TAKEAWAY: Introspection is not the enemy, but self-discovery was never the destination. Paul's answer to the inner struggle is transformation and the discovery of Christ.Scriptures referenced: Romans 6, Romans 7, 2 Corinthians 4:16, Ephesians 3:16, 1 John 2:16, Luke 1:45Note: Douglas Walker is a pastor and theologian, not a licensed psychologist. In the 1890s, Ivan Pavlov noticed his dogs salivating before the food even arrived. That accidental discovery became classical conditioning: the idea that repeated stimuli can train an automatic response. Now zoom out. The notifications, headlines, and algorithms around us are stimuli too, and they're shaping how we react every day.In this episode of Truth Talk, we look at how the world conditions us to respond on cue, and ask whether we're choosing our reactions or just repeating them.Listen now, then send it to someone who needs to hear it.
