Description

They needed certainty. They got chaos. For over a decade, countless people from at least five different countries put their trust in a company offering prenatal paternity tests. It promised clients “99.9% accuracy” — but then routinely, for over a decade, identified the wrong biological fathers.

Investigative journalists Jorge Barrera and Rachel Houlihan track down the people whose lives were torn apart by these bad results, the shattered families and acrimonious court cases that followed, and the story behind the company that continues to stand by its testing and is still operating today.

New episodes of Uncover: Bad Results drop every Monday starting Oct. 28.

One July night in 1995, Deputy Sheriff William G. Hardy was shot behind the Crown Sterling Suites hotel in Birmingham, Alabama. At the same time as the murder, at least ten people saw Toforest Johnson four miles away, at a popular nightclub called Tee's Place. But detectives zeroed in on him as a main suspect in Deputy Hardy’s murder anyway, ultimately resulting in Toforest being tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. For over a quarter century, Toforest has been confined to a 5’ by 8’ cell on Alabama’s death row. In 2019, investigative journalist Beth Shelburne began covering the case, going down a disturbing rabbit hole revealing many unsettling facts that cast grave doubts about Toforest’s guilt. The facts she found tear at the very foundation of the American criminal justice system: No eyewitnesses or physical evidence tied Toforest to the murder; the state tried to convict a different man for the same crime; and perhaps most disturbing of all, Toforest’s conviction relied on an ‘earwitness’ – a woman who claimed to have eavesdropped on an incriminating phone call, a woman whom prosecutors paid for her testimony, in secret. That payment was not disclosed to the jury, Toforest, or his lawyers until after he had been on death row for 17 years. From the team behind the award-winning hit podcast Bone Valley, Lava for Good’s Earwitness is an 8-episode docuseries that asks the question, “How did an innocent man end up on death row — and why is the state still trying to execute him over the objection of the prosecutor who put him there?” Shelburne’s unprecedented access to key players—the lead detective, lead prosecutor, witnesses, jurors, and the earwitness herself— illuminate a story filled with disturbing twists, frustrating ambiguities, and shocking admissions. The story of Toforest Johnson and the state's enthusiasm for the death penalty in the face of such troubling evidentiary flaws brings to light the failings of a criminal justice system run amok. Earwitness is a production of Lava for Good Podcasts in association with Signal Co. No1.

Hollywood Exiles is a tale of glamour, duplicity and political intrigue that reverberates to this day. It’s the story of how Tinseltown became an ideological battleground. The toll of the fight was enormous – reputations, careers and families were torn apart by the campaign to drive communists from the movie business. I would be shocked if even 10% of what D.A said was genuine or honest.

I'm new to this podcast and really enjoyed this series. I liked the format and intrigue. Yes, it's disappointing that there was no real outcome, especially for the families, but then for the type of case it is, I wasn't really expecting one. Good work all round.

Note for anyone with misophonia: the jingling dog collar is persistent and kind of...a lot in this episode.

This is such a fascinating story for many reasons. I admire Pauline for telling her family's story with grace and sensitivity. My only complaint is that through the series, the interviews are mixed so much quieter than Pauline's direct narrative. It made it tricky to get the volume right as I constantly had to adjust up or down depending on who was talking.

You want my sympathy? it's on the dictionary between "shit" and "syphilis" I've never heard more melodrama by someone who walked headlong into some bullshit, knowing it was some bullshit almost from the jump--and paid thousands to do it.

Great, another podcast that could've been just two episodes. Investigative podcasts don't need long storytelling. Start with the facts, instead of misleading the listeners with suspense.

The sister-in-law refusing to answer questions, is unacceptable. Questions people have BECAUSE of what she's said. 🤦🏻‍♀️

in 6th grade our teacher read us The Crucible to teach us the dangers of mass hysteria, group think, and the human attraction to fantastical fanaticism. I greatly appreciate that.

Yawn! Whinge whinge no point trying, no one understands, no one can ever help me so what's the point. Yes, a therapist can't alter your physical appearance but they can help you find another way to value yourself, they can help you learn that your happiness doesn't need to come from external places, that being single or not in a relationship isn't the end of the world. It's possible to think for yourself, you don't need to buy into the superficial "beauty is all" mindset. Ridiculous first world problems!!

So true, what kind of school is built with a cemetery? 167 kids and counting, such a tragedy, an avoidable government sponsored tragedy. Uplifting to hear the children joyfully chanting and dancing at the end of their school week. Great to hear them claiming back their culture.

Fantastic podcast, completely heart breaking story but I'm glad to hear these huge ongoing generational abuses finally being exposed. Ignoring these stories solves nothing and just makes it easier for predators to continue their abuse. I find it infuriating but sadly unsurprising to hear that even after being found guilty in court these criminals are protected and cared for by the religious institutions they represent. The utter hypocrisy of providing care & comfort to abusers while attempting to deny the evidence of dozens of victims in order to avoid responsibility and/or compensation is revolting. I really wish this was the last time this type of story would be uncovered but I'm positive it won't be. Sad.

It’s the content, not the voice. Try doing your own voice recording and see if you at happy with how you sound. Are you too fast? Too slow? Are you articulating your words clearly? Harder to do than you might think. Have you done any public speaking?
