Description

Welcome aboard, everyone 🙂

I’m Captain Ben le Fleming, a professional pilot of over 25 years, with experience on Gulfstream V, VI, & VII, Boeing 737, 757, & 767, and Learjet 45 aircraft.

In this podcast, I chat with my fellow pilots, flight attendants, and other aviation specialists to explore how we develop the can-do, creative mindset in building confidence, performing well, and enjoying the wonderful experience of life, in and out of the flight deck.

They say it takes 1000 people to successfully start, build, and complete a flight mission. That’s mind-blowing, and it highlights how important it is to connect with ourselves with emotional understanding and intelligence as a precursor to developing a spiritual understanding of connection with everyone around us. That forms the basis of health and wellness on a fascinating journey of discovery and adventure together.

My aviation journey started at 25 when I finally found the confidence to pursue my dream of becoming a professional pilot.

Until then, I had not considered myself remotely intelligent or emotionally strong enough to embark on such a feat, as I struggled to concentrate at school, making classroom studies a constant battle.

That was until I hit a low point in my mid-20s when my defeatist mindset led me to fail an interview to become a Professional Property Surveyor after six years of study and working experience.

In my melancholy, I inadvertently picked up a flight school brochure, and the direction of my life completely changed. Four months later, I was on the way to the USA to start my piloting adventure. 26 years later, here I am starting a podcast and supporting others in my Mindset & Confidence Life Coaching business.

Apart from my passion for flight, travel, adventure, discovery, and fascinating experiences around the world, my passions extend to my three wonderful children, as well as sports, guitar playing, singing, DIY, and cooking.

I am also dedicated to self-development and building better relationships, having had a life-long fascination with what makes me tick emotionally, spiritually, physically and mentally and how those elements play out in all those around me.

I am delighted to have you join me on this fascinating journey, so please jump aboard, and let’s see where this adventure takes us 🙂

"The Power of Leadership" 🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 17 With Matty Wohlers Today, I launch with my good mate Matty on a journey discussing the importance of self-awareness, mindfulness, and confidence in leadership. Matty was my captain on a 2-month Boeing 767 detachment to Indonesia, flying pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj celebrations. It was the most wonderful experience, in and out of the flight deck. I put Matty down as one of the people I have learnt a lot about in terms of leadership and creating an environment that allows people to discover the best in themselves. On one occasion, departing Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, we were radioed and informed that an aircraft had crashed on the side of the runway at our destination, Ujung Pandang in Indonesia. We had to decide whether to complete the landing there or choose another destination and decided to continue.   It was a strange scene as we approached the airfield to see the stricken aircraft as a clear reminder of what happens when things go wrong. That picture is a good metaphor for life: if we choose to embrace our mistakes and those of others with a creative mindset, the harsh lessons are invaluable. They give us a much greater chance of launching again off the runway of possibility with an even better chance of completing a safe, efficient and enjoyable journey. Apart from sharing our experiences in aviation, Matty talks about his love of freediving to highlight the value of admitting mistakes, embracing limitations, and working as a team.   We emphasise the need to break free from societal conditioning and selfconsciousness to reach our full potential. The conversation also touches on the value of role models, the impact of fear of judgment, and the importance of resilience.   YouTube: https://youtu.be/UUi0ZYHeBIs Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7jqQrRTwZf7VjbNjLTshxd? si=c890b21e26c54ba5 Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/uncovering-the-aviationmindset- podcast/id1725570994?i=1000653169929 Podbean: https://www.podbean.com/eas/pb-xz3ti-15ee29a   Key Takeaways ✈ Self-awareness and mindfulness are key to developing confidence and effective leadership. ✈ Admitting mistakes and embracing limitations are essential for personal growth and learning. ✈ Working as a team and utilising all available resources leads to better outcomes. ✈ Societal conditioning and fear of judgment can hinder personal and professional development. ✈ Resilience and the ability to overcome challenges are crucial in highpressure environments. Summary Today, another fab mate from the US joined me for part one of this fascinating conversation on mindset, confidence, and well-being.   Captain David Robinson and I worked together for Nissan North America on a Gulfstream 650 a few years back, and he is currently flying a Gulfstream 450 for a private owner in the USA. Although David is over ten years younger than me, he seems at least that much smarter than me, so I have always looked up to him for his intellectual, humorous, and emotionally aware comments in our conversations. We discuss our experiences working together at Nissan and the importance of mindset, confidence, and teamwork in aviation. We reflect on our time as co-captains during the infamous flight from Beirut to Tokyo when Carlos Ghosn was arrested and how that event affected us mentally. We emphasise the value of humility, being proactive, and filling the pool of shared meaning in a team. We also touch on emotional intelligence, fear, and the power of choice in shaping our responses.   Takeaways ✈ The importance of humility and teamwork in aviation ✈ The value of being proactive and filling the pool of shared meaning in a team ✈ The impact of mindset and confidence on performance ✈ The role of emotional intelligence in navigating challenges ✈ The power of choice in shaping our responses to stimuli   I hope you enjoy the podcast. 🛫 Episode 14 with Captain & TRI Mark Blois-Brooke  🛬 My ex-chief Pilot at Tag Aviation, Mark, joins me for another fascinating chat on today’s podcast. Mark has a CV as long as you can imagine, having started flying in the 1970’s.  His first commercial roles were In the corporate/air-taxi environment, flying all types of characters to far-flung places around Europe, some of them highly dodgy. He went on to fly commercially for cargo operators such as DHL on Boeing aircraft before returning to the corporate world on Gulfstream, Challenger, and Falcon aircraft. With well over 40 years under his belt, he still flies the Falcon 7x for a private family under Tag Aviation management. I had the unenviable position of going to Mark with my tail between my legs, having had a ramp check in Vienna a few years back. I had come up short in some paperwork representing the correct amount of fuel on board the aircraft and had to take the need for more professionalism on the chin. As always, the emotional discomfort of that taught me a lesson.  Not living with shame but choosing to see it as a gain is one of my mottos for success in life.  After the emotional feeling faded, that’s precisely what happened. Mark is one of those characters who has so many fascinating stories to relate that he has put them to pen in the form of a book that is well worth reading. ‘Life In A Tin: Stories From A Flying Life’ https://lifeinatin.com/ Mark shares his impressive aviation career and insights on human factors and CRM in the podcast. Mark emphasises the importance of passion and variety in the aviation industry and the challenges and rewards of flying in the corporate world. He discusses the evolution of CRM and the need for effective communication and emotional intelligence in the cockpit. Mark also highlights the value of being friends on the flight deck and creating a supportive and inclusive environment. Mark and I talk about the importance of resilience, learning from mistakes, and finding purpose in life. We discuss the need for professionals to work together and respect each other's ideas, even if they don't always agree. We also touch on the evolution of safety practices in the aviation and medical industries, emphasising the importance of analysing mistakes and learning from them. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the value of stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing challenges as opportunities for personal growth. Keywords aviation, career, human factors, CRM, passion, variety, corporate aviation, communication, emotional intelligence, flight deck, resilience, learning from mistakes, purpose, teamwork, safety practices, comfort zone, personal growth Takeaways Passion and variety are critical in the aviation industry Effective communication and emotional intelligence are crucial in the cockpit Creating a supportive and inclusive environment on the flight deck is important Being friends with your co-pilot can enhance safety and performance Resilience is essential in both professional and personal life. It allows individuals to overcome challenges and learn from mistakes. Even if you disagree, working together and respecting others’ ideas is crucial for achieving common goals. Analysing mistakes and learning from them is crucial to improving safety practices in industries like aviation and medicine. Stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing challenges is an opportunity for personal growth and development. Finding purpose in life and being grateful for our opportunities can lead to a more fulfilling and resilient mindset. Titles The Benefits of Being Friends with Your Co-Pilot The Importance of Passion and Variety in Aviation Finding Purpose and Gratitude in Life Working Together: Respect and Teamwork Sound Bites "I love the industry. It's funny, I think in the corporate world, you find guys who are quite happy to go on because it's a fantastic job, but it's a very privileged job." "The gradients are not as vertical as they used to be. I know some guys used to fly BOAC, the old guys who were long retired now, but they said that when they were flying in the 60s and 70s, a lot of the pilots then wouldn't speak to anybody on the flight deck." "You may really dislike somebody's idea, but at the end of the day, your life is in their hands. So you have to respect them." "It's just a level of professionalism, isn't it? That you just cut above that and just get the job done based on a temporary understanding and liking." "Encouraging people to think making mistakes is absolutely normal. Let's work out how we can learn from something."   Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Background 09:08 The Love for the Aviation Industry 27:51 Breaking Down Barriers and Building Inclusive Flight Deck Environments 37:45 Improving Safety Practices 46:47 Teamwork and Communication 58:38 Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone   I hope you enjoy the podcast. ‘Find Your Passion In Life’   🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 13 with Hook Hookassian🛬   Another American buddy joins me for this open chat on life in and out of the flight deck. Hook and I became mates when we flew a Gulfstream 650 together during my secondment to Nissan North America. He is a real giggle, and his laugh is very infectious. I have always admired his zest for life and finding passion and purpose.  He is one the most sociable people I know, and that particular type of skill and intelligence is invaluable for making the most of life’s incredible opportunities. His background is fascinating.  His family emigrated to the US from Armenia when he was a young boy, and that sense of adventure inspired him to pursue his boyhood dream of becoming a pilot in the US Air Force.  Hook humbly talks about his experiences, notably his feeling of inadequacy when he was not accepted as a fighter pilot. However, he recognised it was a key moment in his development that led to another adventure and renewed sense of purpose. Hook flew the KC 135 Stratotanker in the Air Force before moving on to Gulfstreams and taking up a role with Netjets.  We were operating as a crew together on a flight from Beirut to Tokyo, which resulted in the arrest of our CEO, Carlos Ghosn, for financial irregularities.  It was a bizarre experience, with about 18 people from the state prosecution department searching every nook and cranny of the aircraft, including our crew bags.  Sadly, it led to the winding up of the flight department, and most of us lost our jobs. However, we both look back on that time with fond memories, aside from the challenges.  Hook now works for a private family flying a Gulfstream 450 in the USA. (If you are interested in discovering more of the Carlos Ghosn story, it is the feature of a four part Apple TV+ documentary, as well as other film documentaries.  Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn is available on Apple TV+) Summary In the conversation, we discuss our pilot experiences and the lessons we have learned throughout our careers. We talk about the importance of humility, adaptability, and setting goals and also explore the challenges of parenting and the need for effective communication and mentoring. Our conversation emphasises the value of self-reflection and continuous learning, and we reflect on our experiences and discuss the importance of emotional and spiritual maturity in navigating unexpected situations. We share stories from our time working together at Nissan and discuss the need for open communication and dialogue. We also emphasise the importance of being prepared, maintaining control, analysing the situation, and taking appropriate action. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the value of reviewing and reflecting on experiences to continue learning and growing. Keywords pilots, flying, experiences, humility, adaptability, goals, parenting, communication, mentoring, self-reflection, learning, emotional maturity, spiritual maturity, unexpected situations, open communication, dialogue, preparation, maintaining control, analysing the situation, taking appropriate action, reviewing and reflecting Key Takeaways Humility and effective communication are important in personal growth. ‘The Isolation Of Aviation’   🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 12 With CFA & Concierge Bree Sheehan 🛬   Summary My good Ozzie buddy Brie joins me for another fascinating conversation about living a healthy lifestyle in and out of the aviation environment. We explore many topics aside from the potential to feel isolated in our aviation roles as we travel worldwide.  Bree and I became mates when we worked for Nissan North America, endlessly exploring this topic at 45,000 and over many enjoyable worldwide adventures.  She always makes me smile with her humour, energy, and interest in all she puts her mind to, including the human beings around her. Bree is committed to personal development and always impresses me with her enthusiasm for finding the next chapter in her life.  Her antipodean thirst for travel and adventure has taken her worldwide, working in various fields, including airlines and private/corporate aviation. She studied for a degree whilst working full-time and continues to add to her self-education CV. With her enviable communication skills, she has now branched out from her role as a corporate flight attendant to provide concierge services for global flight departments. As I always maintain in our niche world of private aviation, Bree’s CFA role provides the linchpin between the demanding passengers in the back of the jet and the demanding flight deck crew in the front. Emotional and social intelligence is vital in this role, which Bree has in abundance.    Key Takeaways ✈ Building relationships in a male-dominated industry can be challenging, but conflict resolution and emotional intelligence are key to creating better relationships. ✈ Learning to say no and prioritise personal time is essential for maintaining mental and emotional well-being. ✈ Complaining and negativity can have a detrimental effect on personal and professional relationships. ✈ Maintaining personal health through proper sleep, nutrition, and self-care is crucial in a high-pressure industry like aviation. ✈ Raising awareness of mental health and well-being is essential in the aviation industry, and there is a need for more conversations and support in this area. ✈ Gender equality and emotional intelligence are essential for creating a more inclusive and supportive environment in aviation. Feeling isolated in the aviation industry can be challenging, especially when lacking diversity and inclusion. ✈ Isolation can harm mental health, and it is crucial to address this issue in the industry. ✈ Effective leadership and emotional intelligence are crucial for creating a supportive work environment. ✈ There is a need for better training and development opportunities for aviation professionals and mentoring programs.   Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Background 01:36 Challenges of Building Relationships 03:30 Managing Expectations and Saying No 05:27 Balancing Personal Time and Socialising 06:27 The Difficulty of Saying No 08:18 Managing Personal Time on the Road 09:16 The Challenge of Managing Crew Dynamics 10:10 The Complexities of Crew Relationships 11:04 The Importance of Self-Interest and Personal Development 12:01 The Negative Effects of Complaining and Negativity 13:21 Maintaining Personal Health and Well-being 15:13 Dealing with Exhaustion and Fatigue 16:31 The Importance of Health and Discipline 20:34 The Impact of Diet on Mental and Emotional Health 22:29 The Need for Gender Equality and Emotional Intelligence in Aviation 24:08 Challenges Faced by Female Flight Attendants 25:04 Challenging Behavior and Feeling Isolated 27:01 Isolation and Mental Health 29:00 Isolation and Personal Choices 30:28 Choosing Social Connections 34:40 Leadership and Emotional Intelligence 38:11 Improving Leadership and Training 43:01 Nurturing Human Potential 45:50 Open Communication and Safety 47:13 The Need for Dialogue   Bree can be found at the following links: Linkedin Instagram Facebook   I hope you enjoy the podcast. ‘The Power of Emotional Intelligence’ 🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 11 With Captain Oskar Maliszewski 🛬   Summary Another great aviation friend joins me today in this fascinating conversation. I first met Oskar when I did freelance cover for him on a Gulfstream 650 while he was the Director Of Flight Ops at a private jet operation in Warsaw, Poland. Oskar is another one of those tremendously humble individuals who set the bar high in our industry with his commitment to a high level of emotional intelligence, warmth and inclusivity. I was fortunate to fly with Oskar a few years after meeting.  We took off from London Luton airport in a Gulfstream 650 only to be faced with a main hydraulic failure, which required us to return to the airport immediately.  I was proud of how we both worked together on that occasion, and it was an excellent example of how effectively human beings can operate in unison when employing a healthy mixture of professional skill and emotional intelligence. ‘The Secret To Confidence’ 🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 10 With Heidi Cole 🛬   Summary The lovely Heidi Cole is back for round 2 of our conversation! In the conversation, we discuss the importance of confidence and authenticity in various aspects of life, including professional settings and personal relationships. We explore the fight or flight response in high-stakes situations and the impact of stress on our ability to connect with ourselves and others. We emphasise the power of emotional resilience and the need to trust our inner guidance and intuition. We discuss the importance of balancing our feminine and masculine energies and the journey of personal growth and self-discovery. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of trusting and embracing our true selves to create fulfilling and meaningful lives.   Key Takeaways 🛫 We are born confident and capable, but as we grow older, we often pick up limiting beliefs and self-doubt that hinder our confidence. 🛫 In high-stakes situations, such as job interviews or important meetings, the fight or flight response can cause us to disconnect from ourselves and rely on external expectations, leading to a lack of authenticity. 🛫 Authenticity and trust in ourselves create a sense of calm and safety, which are essential in building strong relationships and making a positive impact. 🛫 Trusting our intuition and inner guidance is crucial in making decisions and navigating challenges. It is important to strip away the layers of identity and connect with our true selves. 🛫 Balancing our feminine and masculine energies allows for a more harmonious and inclusive approach to life, leading to greater fulfilment and growth.   Chapters 00:00 The Confidence We're Born With 00:36 The Fight or Flight Response in High-Stake Situations 03:00 The Importance of Authenticity and Trusting Ourselves 04:25 The Impact of Being Ourselves in Professional Settings 05:47 Creating a Feeling of Home, Calm, and Safety 06:45 The Power of Emotional Resilience 07:43 The Law of Sympathetic Resonance 08:12 Stripping Away Identity and Being Honest with Ourselves 09:10 Going with the Flow and Trusting Ourselves 10:31 Counteracting Stress and Connecting Authentically 11:27 Peeling Off Layers and Connecting to Our True Selves 12:55 Trusting Our Inner Guidance and Intuition 14:53 The Journey of Growth and Overcoming Challenges 20:10 The Practice of Confidence and Trusting Ourselves 23:05 The Importance of Freedom and Inclusivity 24:36 Trusting the Process and Enjoying Life 28:06 The Power of Innate Intelligence and Intuition 29:01 Balancing the Feminine and Masculine Energies 30:53 Trusting Ourselves and Following Our Inner Guidance 33:22 Closing Remarks and Contact Information   Heidi would love to help you build confidence as a corporate flight attendant, so please get in touch with her using the following links:   Website: https://www.confidenceintheair.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/coleheidi/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/heidi.cole.1044 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_heidicole_confidenceintheair_/   I hope you enjoy the podcast, and I’d love to hear your comments and reviews 🙏. Summary   Today, I am joined by my old friend Leo Nugent. Leo is a training captain on the Boeing 737 for a major airline in the UK, as well as the BALPA (British Airline Pilots Association) representing the pilots he works with at the company.   Leo and I met on our commercial training course at Oxford Aviation Academy about 24 years ago. Our paths crossed professionally about eight years later when I joined the same airline as Leo. Leo was by then a captain on the Boeing 737 when I joined as a First Officer, so we had the interesting dynamic of flying together with different levels of authority.  I remember performing the worst of my landings in a jet aircraft with him into Kos one night - it was a very humbling experience! Leo’s experience as a union representative offers immense value for all who are committed to developing healthy mindsets and emotional and spiritual connections.   We discuss the importance of teamwork, emotional understanding, and authenticity in aviation.  We emphasise the need for pilots to establish a flow state in the cockpit and develop strong communication and trust with our team members.  We also highlight the value of learning from mistakes, embracing feedback, and continuously improving.  The conversation touches on the challenges of leadership, the pressure of perfection, and the superficiality of social media.  Overall, the conversation emphasises the importance of connection, resilience, and personal growth in the aviation industry, which as always, can be applied to any stage in life, be it professionally or personally.    Takeaways   Teamwork and effective communication are crucial in aviation, contributing to safety and efficiency. Establishing a flow state in the cockpit helps pilots perform at their best and enhances teamwork. Emotional understanding and authenticity are essential for building strong relationships and trust in the aviation industry. Learning from mistakes and embracing feedback is essential for personal and professional growth. The pressure of perfection and the superficiality of social media can hinder personal development and connection.   Chapters   00:00 Introduction and Background 03:18 The Importance of Teamwork in Aviation 06:05 Establishing a Flow State in the Cockpit 08:27 The Role of Emotional Understanding in Aviation 10:19 The Importance of Fairness and Authenticity 12:15 Standing Up Against Corruption and Injustice 13:14 Seeing the Universe as a Beautiful Place 14:44 The Value of Emotional Connection in the Cockpit 17:36 Learning from Mistakes and Embracing Feedback 19:30 Deliberate Practice and Continuous Improvement 23:18 Balancing Operational Excellence and Communication 24:46 The Importance of People Skills in Leadership 26:44 Preparation and Teamwork in Challenging Operations 30:04 Overcoming Challenges and Building Confidence 32:58 The Pressure of Perfection and Authenticity 35:54 The Superficiality of Social Media and the Importance of Connection 39:17 Navigating Difficult Situations and Overcoming Challenges 46:00 Trusting the Process and Embracing the Journey   Keep It In The Greens 😊    How about clicking on the links below to:   ✈ Join my monthly newsletter https://www.benlefleming.com/monthly-flightpath ✈ Book your free discovery call with me https://calendly.com/benlefleming/discovery-call?month=2023-12 ✈ Discover my coaching offers https://www.benlefleming.com/coaching   You can also find me at:   https://www.instagram.com/benlefleming_/ https://www.facebook.com/ben.l.fleming.7 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61552792154354 https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-le-fleming-2a623710/
Summary Today I am joined by another great friend, Veeraj Mewasingh. Veeraj currently flies Gulfstream 550 and 650’s for an operation in South Korea. We have similar backgrounds in coming to our piloting profession as second careers in our mid to late twenties. Veeraj qualified as an optometrist before overcoming his doubts as to his abilities, and, with the encouragement of his mother, finally followed his dreams of becoming a professional pilot.  We flew a Gulfstream 550 together a few years back.  On one flight from Tokyo to Jakarta, we unexpectedly encountered severe turbulence and the aircraft was hit by lightning a total of four times.  It was one of the most emotionally charged times I have had in my life, and I have spent long periods of time thinking about the existential nature of the incident. The training that we had been through in our professional lives, and our personal interest in emotional and spiritual health supported us in that dramatic incident, and it forms the basis of everything I now approach in life. In the conversation, we discuss our aviation careers and share stories of our experiences.  We talk about dealing with undermining people, the importance of self-confidence in aviation, surviving turbulence and lightning strikes, emotional and spiritual resilience, the power of compassion and connection, and supporting and understanding others.  We emphasise the importance of training, self-reflection, and understanding one's emotions to navigate challenging situations.  The conversation ends with a discussion about future topics to explore. Key Takeaways Self-confidence is crucial in aviation as it gives pilots and others a greater capacity for situational awareness and decision-making. Dealing with underconfident individuals requires compassion and understanding, as they may be struggling with their own insecurities. Emotional and spiritual resilience can help pilots and the wider community to navigate challenging situations and maintain a sense of calm and focus. Supporting and understanding others in the aviation industry is essential for creating a positive and effective team dynamic. Training, self-reflection, and continuous learning are key to developing the skills and mindset needed to thrive in aviation and our lives in general.   Chapters   00:00 Introduction and Career Background 03:16 Dealing with Undermining and Lack of Confidence 11:39 The Importance of Self-Confidence in Aviation 20:31 Surviving Turbulence and Lightning Strikes 25:15 Emotional and Spiritual Resilience 30:02 The Power of Compassion and Connection 38:47 Supporting and Understanding Others 40:39 Conclusion and Future Discussions
Welcome aboard to episode 2 of the Uncovering The Aviation Mindset podcast. Today, I am joined by my friend Grady Montgomery, a full-time US-based Gulfstream contractor, entrepreneur, ex-firefighter, and self-confessed dreamer.   Grady and I met over ten years ago on the Gulfstream 650 type rating course in Savannah, USA, and have been great friends since.  Grady inspires me as he has always had the confidence to go it alone and not rely on employment to make his living.  He is also a successful businessman, running his property and t-shirt retailing businesses.  In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his daughter, flying his light aricraft, and motoring around on his boat.   In this conversation, Grady and I discuss his journey in aviation, starting from his late entry into flying and progressing to becoming a Gulfstream pilot.  We explore topics such as taking risks, overcoming the fear of failure, dealing with challenging situations, teamwork, decision-making, leadership, and supporting others.  Grady emphasises the importance of confidence, believing in oneself, and empowering others.  He also highlights the role of mentors and the responsibility to help the next generation of pilots.   Takeaways   Taking risks and investing in one's passion can lead to fulfilling careers. Overcoming fear of failure is essential for personal and professional growth. Teamwork and effective decision-making are crucial in aviation. Leadership involves empowering others and supporting their growth. Mentoring and helping the next generation is a responsibility for experienced professionals.   Chapters   00:00 Introduction and Background 02:23 Starting Flying and Career Progression 06:05 Taking Risks and Investing in the Future 10:25 Overcoming Fear of Failure 13:19 Dealing with Challenging Situations 17:34 Teamwork and Decision-Making 25:10 Gaining Confidence and Empowering Others 29:59 Saying No and Making Difficult Decisions 38:49 Leadership and Supporting Others 42:35 Mentoring and Helping the Next Generation If you are interested in exploring how to develop your mindset and confidence with me, why not click the link to my website and book a FREE 30-minute discovery call during which we will discuss whether I am able to support you with my coaching program? We made friends immediately, went out, socialized together and just really became great friends. And we've seen each other all around the world now for nearly 10 years. So welcome Grady. Thank you, Ben. Pleasure to be here. Thanks for having me on your podcast. Lovely to have you. Grady's got a really interesting background because he didn't actually start flying until he was 34. And you came, as you...   Talked about, as I well know, we've talked plenty of times about as you came from not a privileged family in terms of finances. So you've had to work all through your life and you went through and did the business and finance degree, set up a t-shirt business, worked really as an entrepreneur. You didn't start flying until 34. That's all correct, Ben. You know, being a pilot had been a childhood dream.   So, you know, I wanted to do it, just didn't have the financial resources to pursue it through college, out of college. You know, I started a different company, a t-shirt company. And before that, you know, I had done various jobs. I was a DJ, a lifeguard, a bartender, just a lot of different things. And the t-shirt company provided the financial wherewithal to get my pilot's license. And I'm pretty much a goal already in person. So I decided, well, I know nothing about flying. I know nothing about aviation. So.   I'm going to stick with until I solo. And if I don't like it, then I'll drop out then. But I actually loved it. And I went on and got my private pilot's license and then just kept moving forward. Like everybody else, Instrument Commercial, ATP, started a little aerial tour company, which I turned into a 135 charter, which led into me becoming a co-pilot on a Citation II that was based on the local field where I lived and did my flying. And that's kind of how I got into aviation.   Ben le Fleming (02:23.246) Yes, that's such a brilliant story. But I can't actually remember, I've asked you this specifically. When you got into flying, did you do it to become a commercial pilot or was it just literally to get to that first stage of sailing and seeing what happens after that? It was, there was no goal to become a commercial pilot. It was strictly to get a private pilot's license. Like I mentioned, my goal was to solo. And then once I reached that, then I wanted to get my private pilot's license. And you know, what...   I did it for multiple reasons. I've always had a travel bug. I've always liked to travel and I've always had a sense of adventure. And, you know, weekend trips, when you have a small airplane, take on a whole new meaning because three and a half hours in an airplane can take you a lot further than three and a half hours in an automobile. So, that's how I got into it. And then, like I said, it was my passion. So, even though I was later in life, I just kept pursuing it. And, you know, this brought me to where I am today. Yeah, such a good story. The thing that I...   I'm really impressed about we talked about this back in 2014 because I've got that sort of basic mindset. What I think I'm pushing through it now about the idea, well, let's stick with the safety thing and get a job so that you've got a guaranteed income and you've got a bit of a pension and things like that. But you went against that grain. I know being an entrepreneur, you have that mindset and I think I'm very much developing that in my later years now. Very it's wonderful. It's very liberating, very empowering. But you.   You did that early, because you've been a contractor. We call it freelance over here. But you've been a freelancer for the last 14 years. And to go from... I mean, you had your first job, I think, on citations and Falcons, but to actually go and decide... That's just such a good story, the way you went from chief pilot on the citations to the Falcons to the next stage of becoming a Gulfstream pilot. I mean, I love that. It's such an impact. Tell us that story.   Sure. Well, it's not a great story, but it's, I was chief pilot for a great part 91 flight department. And, you know, the financial downturn, they got behind it. They couldn't get ahead of it. So that department closed. And I was just starting, trying to figure out what I wanted to do. This is in 2009, 2010. And, you know, the aviation market wasn't great. So I was looking at everything. I was doing contract work in the Citations and the XL.   Ben le Fleming (04:43.094) And I'm going like, if I want to do this, you've got to go large cabin. You got to go global or Gulf Stream. And I've lived near Savannah. I have friends at Gulf Stream. I have other acquaintances that flew Gulf Stream. So I chose to do that route. So I did, I paid for my own 550 type, my G5 type, which was a 550 to 450 of the G5. And it took me a couple of years to become successful at that because   You know, it's like any other business. When you've got to go out and you market yourself, you've got to go to the event, you've got to let everybody know who you are and what you're doing and that you're available. And you just got to meet and greet people. So I was a, it took me a couple years, but I turned into a successful G5 contract pilot. The G650 was announced and I told a buddy of mine that like, oh, that's, I'm going to school on that. And he kind of chuckled and said, okay, yeah, sure. And when it came out,   I was in one of the earlier classes with you on the 650. And, you know, I paid for all my own training. So I had paid for my G5 initial. I paid for all my recurrence. And I bought and paid for my G650 type. And, you know, it's a leap of faith is all it is. You know, my goal was just to hopefully get enough work in it starting out to, you know, recoup my investment and to move forward. But what I kept telling everybody is, you know, that's just an investment in my future.   And I did the exact same thing when I went to G7 school. But going back to the 650, you know, I hit the ground running and it's a long range aircraft. There weren't a lot of pilots typed on it. And it was just, I just hit a home run. I really did. So I became a successful G650 contract pilot. I did that for a few years. And then when Gulfstream announced the G7 series, you know, with the side stick and the symmetry flight deck, I realized at that time that Gulfstream would never put a yoke back into another aircraft.   So that is the future. And if you want to make an investment in your future, that's a plane to go to school on because it doesn't have the range of a 650. It doesn't do the same missions, but that's going to be a start. And that's where I'm at now. I'm a ful

🛫 Mark Evers: Airline Start-up Consultant & Boeing Training Captain🛬   An old friend joins me again today.  I came across Mark for the first time while sitting in the right-hand seat as a First Officer on the Boeing 737 in 2008.  Mark was one of my training captains, and I consider at the top of the tree.  His ability to make me feel comfortable and confident in that high workload role as a newly type-rated pilot was exceptional. We discuss the importance of stripping away any need to prove oneself to promote others. By developing our emotional intelligence to understand ourselves, we build the capacity to make it all about promoting others. As a by-product, we can immensely improve ourselves and our lives.  Mark’s skills have extended far beyond the flight deck. He has successfully helped six airlines launch in the intense and risky aviation business through his company Aviatica Group.  His knowledge of compliance and procedures, as well as his mindset, is second to none. Mark shares his strategies for dealing with intense pressure and criticism, including taking accountability and learning from failures.
