Description

We’re exploring the commons of Waltham Forest: community gardens, East London. From fairy dens to parasitic wasps to 50 person outdoor feasts and streets filled with sunflowers. We want to know: what's so special about community gardens? Why do people think growing food can change the world? Who feels welcome in these spaces? What's a seed bomb? We will be travelling to record the stories of magical green spaces and the growers that tend them. In each 30 minute episode we will visit a different grower in a different community garden, and hear their stories of how they found this common ground and what keeps them coming back.

Hosted by Ibby and Rawnak, food growers passionate about the people and stories behind the gardens. Supported by the Waltham Forest Food Growers Network.

In this episode we visit Leyton Boundary Garden and speak to Mareeam, who is one of the growers there. We speak about farming in Bangladesh, the Muslim women’s gardening club, growing for sanity, and suitcases full of lemons. As her children water the broad beans, we sit on the ground together in the shade of the fruit trees to chat. Maraeem is also a facilitator and community organiser with The Waltham Forest Right To Grow Campaign - a group who’ve been working to get the council to let people grow food on disused public land, and support people to build small gardens with their neighbours. To learn more about this wonderful garden read the founder, Jon Day’s beautiful Essay in ‘In the Garden– Essays on Nature and Growing’.This podcast is hosted by Ibby and Rawnak, food growers passionate about the people and stories behind the gardens. In our first episode we introduce our experiences of gardening, the people who inspired us and our motivations for starting this podcast. We will also be sharing the story behind the name ‘Under the Concrete’ and our exciting plans for the podcast going forward. The podcast is best enjoyed with a cup of tea, on a walk or in your garden.Hosted by Ibby and Rawnak, food growers passionate about the people and stories behind the gardens.
