Having rewatched the nightmare fuel that is 1985's Return to Oz, we sat back down with our special guest, Max Rieper, the managing editor for Royals Review, who contrary to his peers not only loved this film as a child but felt this film was superior to its predecessor The Wizard of Oz because it was more faithful to the L. Frank Baum books. That it was darker and bleaker didn't bother young Max, but how would its vision of the Land of Oz and its new traveling companions for a much younger Dorothy (played by a Fairuza Balk who enjoyed her 10th birthday while shooting this film) play to a grown-up Max? And if the test of time ended up being cruel to Return to Oz, how would it play to Max's memories of a very strange film? Was his recall on point or were there gaping holes in what he remembered the film being, having not seen it in more than 35 years?Return to Oz is available to stream for free in the US on Disney+.Max can be found at Royals Review and manages its social media accounts: Twitter, Facebook, BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan can also be heard on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created. You can follow Unkind Rewind on: BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Threads, Twitter, and YouTubeJosh's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, Letterboxd, and SubstackSean's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, LetterboxdJoin the Munch Casts Discord: Just go here. You can find all of our information and episodes at our website: https://unkindrewind.com/Questions, comments, concerns, and general feedback can be sent to: unkindrewindpod@gmail.comOr you can call in and leave a voicemail at (507) 479-6440 and have your message played on the show.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unkind-rewind--6119307/support.
After Sean tells of a harrowing trip to the cinema, we sit down with our very special guest for this week and next, Max Rieper, the managing editor for Royals Review, to take a trip down memory lane and discuss his childhood standing on an island loving this next film. That it was nightmare fuel didn't bother young Max, and its hewing close to its source material really meant something to him while his classmates just couldn't understand. Next week's main event is available to stream for free in the US on Disney+.Max can be found at Royals Review and manages its social media accounts: Twitter, Facebook, BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
Having rewatched the 1987 Jon Cryer star vehicle Hiding Out, we sit back down with our special guest, professor of modern Middle Eastern history Brian Mann to peer deep into the soul of eight-year-old Brian to divine what it was about this tale of a nearly 30-year-old stockbroker on the run from the mob embedding himself in a Delaware High School and doing everything he can to stop himself from bedding a high school girl who he ultimately follows to college. Tip your cap to the '80s? Strap in for a fun ride, and find out what Jon Cryer had to say about Josh having just seen this film when fate thrust them together in real life.Hiding Out is currently available to stream for free in the US on Prime Video with Ads. Brian can be found on: LetterboxdAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
This week, Josh and Sean dig into the past of modern Middle Eastern history professor, Brian Mann, getting down to brass tacks on an entry in a certain star actor's canon who truly resonated with Brian when he was peaking in life in late elementary school. Brian tells of his childhood adoration of the star of next week's film and hopes upon hope that revisiting this cherished memory doesn't ruin the entirety of his childhood for the sake of content for this podcast. Next week's main event is available to stream for free in the US on Prime Video with Ads.Brian can be found on: LetterboxdAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
This week we jumped on The Beastmaster train with writer and musician Jeremy Steen and got a helluva ride. Did Jeremy's passion for this film influence his dietary practices? Does he still feel comfortable being known as a "Beastmaster guy" to anyone who's seen his framed Beastmaster poster? Has his shipment of body oil come in yet? Did this rekindle his love of ferrets so much that he'll be taking that love to a whole new level by bringing one of those cute little critters home to live with him?The Beastmaster is presently available to stream for free in the US on Prime.Jeremy can be found on: BlueSky and LetterboxdJeremy Steen's bands can be found here:Flesh Lights (Never See Snow LP, Muscle Pop LP, You're A Stealer EP, "No Longer" b/w "You Don't Know")Dry GuyLung LettersJeremy was interviewed at Rejoinder Mag (5 Questions with Jeremy Steen), in conjunction with the publication of four short related pieces grouped as Not One Domino Shall Fall:The Worst and the DullestBig GameA Reason to BelieveRemember (Walking in the Sand)His piece at the Oxford American about his experience on the set of Terrence Malick's divisive film Song to Song: Background Noise. In this latest foray into the Unkind Rewind, we get to know writer and musician Jeremy Steen. Way before he was fronting or playing bass in bands in Austin or having his work published at the Oxford American and various literary journals, Jeremy had a passion for a film which may or may not have influenced his dietary practices and which definitely instilled in him a love of a certain strange domesticated animal--a love we'll have to wait until after next week's episode and see if he'll be taking to a whole new level by bringing one of those cute little critters home to live with him.Next week's film (you'll have to listen to discover what it is) is presently available to stream for free in the US on Prime. Jeremy can be found on: BlueSky and LetterboxdJeremy Steen's bands can be found here:Flesh Lights (Never See Snow LP, Muscle Pop LP, You're A Stealer EP, "No Longer" b/w "You Don't Know")Dry GuyLung LettersJeremy was interviewed at Rejoinder Mag (5 Questions with Jeremy Steen), in conjunction with the publication of four short related pieces grouped as Not One Domino Shall Fall:The Worst and the DullestBig GameA Reason to BelieveRemember (Walking in the Sand)His piece at the Oxford American about his experience on the set of Terrence Malick's divisive film Song to Song: Background Noise. In this Main Event, we get back together with best-selling sci-fi author Daniel H. Wilson (Robopocalypse and Robogenesis and the Michael Crichton sequel The Andromeda Evolution) to revisit a staple of his childhood that was surprisingly scary today, The Gate. Starring a very young Stephen Dorff, along with an eventual Satanist, Kenny Powers's SIL, and an actress creepily sexualized, this entry in the horror-targeted-at-tweens subgenre had some serious special effects bonafides despite one's assumptions given its era. It also left Daniel impressed that he was able to withstand its scares as a child, which is all the more surprising when hearing that it was supposed to be MUCH harsher than the finished product ended up being. The Gate is presently available to stream for free in the US on Tubi, Prime, Plex, and The Roku Channel. And a brand new Vestron Steelbook Special Edition Blu-Ray was just released on May 14, 2024, exclusive to Wal-Mart.Daniel H. Wilson can be reached via his website: https://www.danielhwilson.com/You can follow his author page on Facebook for any Daniel H. Wilson news. And keep your eyes peeled for his upcoming novel courtesy of Doubleday, titled Heliopause, which should hit shelves late in 2024 or early in 2025. All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan can also be heard with his co-host Adam Schwitters on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created. You can follow Unkind Rewind on: BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Threads, Twitter, and YouTubeJosh's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, Letterboxd, and SubstackSean's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, LetterboxdJoin the Munch Casts Discord: Just go here.Questions, comments, concerns, and general feedback can be sent to: unkindrewindpod@gmail.comOr you can call in and leave a voicemail at (507) 479-6440 and have your message played on the show.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unkind-rewind--6119307/support.
In this lively installment of the Unkind Rewind, we get to know roboticist, author, and TV host Daniel H. Wilson. Before he wrote best-selling novels like Robopocalypse and Robogenesis and the Michael Crichton sequel The Andromeda Evolution, Daniel got into some mischief for which we assume the statute of limitations has run out on and is probably safe for broadcast. Tune in for stories revolving around church busing, kids on motorcycles, and hijacking phone lines to call in to the DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince 1-900 number, stay for the preliminary discussion of a youth-oriented horror film about to get a Steelbook Vestron Video Blu-Ray release.Next week's film (you'll have to listen to discover what it is) is presently available to stream for free in the US on Tubi, Prime, Plex, and The Roku Channel.Daniel H. After 35 years separated from the cool comfort of the high-water mark of the Geriatric Renaissance, 1985's Ron Howard geezer pleaser Cocoon, how would our special guest Peter Johansen react to being utterly surprised by a solid 60% of the movie? How would being the exact age of one of the "septuagenarians" in the film play to him? Would the extreme horniness of this film about the Greatest Generation, the aliens who inhabited Atlantis, and a down-on-his-luck fisherman catch him off guard? There's one way to find out: checking out this installment of the Unkind Rewind.Peter can be found socially at: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and ThreadsHis carpentry Instagram account is here: https://www.instagram.com/peter_johansen_built/ All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan can also be heard on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created.
Sit right back and get to know our next guest, jack of all trades Peter Johansen, as he laughs about being defined by something new, reminisces about kicking other kids out of "his seat" at the local movie theater, and surmises that he surely cried when he saw our next selection and will likely shed at least one more tear when we watch it for next week.Peter can be found socially at: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and ThreadsHis carpentry Instagram account is here: https://www.instagram.com/peter_johansen_built/ All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan can also be heard on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created.
We sat down with LA Weekly/Village Voice film reviewer Chad Byrnes and dove into the borderline traumatic childhood viewing experience that was seeing Firstborn--a cautionary tale about letting pinball, cocaine, Coleman grills (and Big Charcoal, by proxy), and Peter Weller into your single-parent home--in the movie theater with his divorcée mother. We also celebrate the creative forces that were Peter Weller, Michael Apted, Teri Garr, and Corey Haim, while wondering what happened to Christopher Collet, all of whom were great in this 1984 heightened family trauma drama. Come for the discussion of seeing a movie with your mom that traumatized you both, stay for tons of talk praising Corey Haim, speculation that RoboCop derailed Peter Weller's acting career, and the offer of unequivocal proof that Sam was lying about his baseball-playing past.Chad can be found online at: InstagramChad's work can be found at: The Village Voice and LA Weekly. We are joined by Chad Byrnes, film reviewer at The Village Voice and LA Weekly and all-around righteous dude, to discuss his personal history with a mostly forgotten cautionary family drama that reaches a fairly terrifying fever pitch by the end, which he's not seen in ages. As a child of divorce at the time, the movie we'll be watching for next week may not have been the best movie to see with his mother, but that's what happened to Chad, which we dig into a bit here before we head off to watch the film before next week's Main Event.Chad can be found online at: Instagram Chad's work can be found at: The Village Voice and LA WeeklyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.Josh Duggan and Adam Schwitters can also be heard on their seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created. You can follow Unkind Rewind on: BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Threads, Twitter, and YouTubeJosh's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, Letterboxd, and SubstackSean's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, LetterboxdAdam's Social Media: Twitter and BlueSkyJoin the Munch Casts Discord: Just go here.Questions, comments, concerns, and general feedback can be sent to: unkindrewindpod@gmail.comOr you can call in and leave a voicemail at (507) 479-6440 and have your message played on the show.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unkind-rewind--6119307/support.
What would our guest Leon Henderson Jr make of his return to the 1986 genre mashup Night of the Creeps? Would the countless influences worn on its sleeve wear out their welcome? Did he wish he could have a roommate as generous and giving as J.C., who was surely given those initials for his Christ-like self-sacrifice? Was Leon's household solely responsible for its strong Midwestern showing on the home video rental market? Was he thrilled, as Detective Cameron would have wanted? After getting to know co-host Sean McGrath a little better, Josh sits down with this week's guest Leon Henderson Jr. Dipping in and out of the comedy scene in LA, Leon's shifted largely into locations work on set--you should see his name when the credits roll on Paul Thomas Anderson's untitled and secretive new project. Having provided us with a list of films we could have done a whole season of Unkind Rewind on, we chose one we were not familiar with and got him to give us a rundown of his past with this '80s genre mashup.Listen to find out the film, and then make sure to check back in to next week's Main Event to see how it held up to Leon's memories and expectations.Leon's photography can be found at his website: https://www.lhj-photo.com/You can follow Leon on: Instagram, IG (Leon's photography), and Twitter. All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.Josh Duggan and Adam Schwitters can also be heard on their seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created. You can follow Unkind Rewind on: BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Threads, Twitter, and YouTubeJosh's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, Letterboxd, and SubstackSean's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, LetterboxdAdam's Social Media: Twitter and BlueSkyJoin the Munch Casts Discord: Just go here.Questions, comments, concerns, and general feedback can be sent to: unkindrewindpod@gmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unkind-rewind--6119307/support.
Having rewatched Labyrinth, we sat back down with Kay from the F**k My Work Life Podcast to see how her fond memories of the film fared upon seeing the film again for the first time in decades. Did David Bowie's junk in tights titillate? Were there plot points that horrified her? Were there elements of the love story that were wildly inappropriate in retrospect? The answers to those and so many other questions lie within this episode.Kay's podcast, F**k My Work Life, can and should be listened to often on Apple Podcasts, Buzzsprout, Spotify, and virtually every other podcast platform. Welcome to the Unkind Rewind, where we revisit and possibly ruin the movies of your youth, one guest at a time. In the first week, we'll sit down with our guest and get to know them while diving into their relationship to a film. The next week, we get back together after having watched said film, evaluating how it played to our guest's expectations while seeing how true their memories were to the movie at hand. Rinse, lather, repeat. So join us each week as we mine our nostalgia and risk the ruination of our youth by rewatching the flicks we grew up on with the Unkind Rewind, available on YouTube and wherever you get your pod on.Join the Munch Casts Discord: Munch Casts DiscordFollow us on: BlueSky, Facebook, Reddit, Threads, and TwitterEmail the podcast at: unkindrewindpod@gmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unkind-rewind--6119307/support.
