Our guest, filmmaker Nick D'Agostino, was so obsessed with the 1973 animated version of Robin Hood that as a child, family vacations had to happen at places with VCRs where he'd subject his extended family to multiple viewings of Robin Hood and The Lion King. Nick had not seen it though since he was about 10 years old. Would it pass the test of time for not only Nick, but hosts Josh Duggan and Sean McGrath, who also grew up with a fondness for this film, or would it crash and burn? Why didn't Nick remember much of the plot of the film? Were the emotions the audience was supposed to feel earned by what was shown on screen? Would they all come out on the other side still liking the movie that is a key point of origin for the furry movement? There's one way to find out the answer to these questions...Robin Hood is currently available on Disney+.Nick D'Agostino can be found on: Instagram, his YouTube, and the website for Justice: The MovieAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan can also be heard with co-host Adam Schwitters on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created. You can follow Unkind Rewind on: BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Threads, Twitter, and YouTubeJosh's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, Letterboxd, and SubstackSean's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, LetterboxdJoin the Munch Casts Discord: Just go here. You can find all of our information and episodes at our website: https://unkindrewind.com/Questions, comments, concerns, and general feedback can be sent to: unkindrewindpod@gmail.comOr you can call in and leave a voicemail at (507) 479-6440 and have your message played on the show.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unkind-rewind--6119307/support.
This week, Josh and Sean are pleased as punch to be joined by filmmaker Nick D'Agostino, who recently relocated from Austin to New York. He talks growing up in the Boston area with older parents, obsessive adolescent movie-watching habits, and hustling on the film scene in Austin. And of course, we talk about his experiences with a treasured film from his childhood with which we surmise the entire audience at home has a relationship. Next week's film is currently available on Disney+.Nick D'Agostino can be found on: Instagram, his YouTube, and the website for Justice: The MovieAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
Actress extraordinaire Laura Faye Smith comes to the Unkind Rewind to revisit this erotically charged thriller she watched with her mother as a teen to see if it holds up. How would the pairing of Theresa Russell and Debra Winger play nearly 40 years later? Would the titular femme fatale's modus operandi make sense? Would there be enough for Winger and Russell to do as one chased the other across the country? Could the extremely brief appearances of Diane Ladd and Dennis Hopper be made sense of? Could Laura Faye's superhuman memory be surprised at all? The answer to these and so many other questions about the 1987 Bob Rafelson film Black Widow lie within.Black Widow is currently available on most major VOD platforms for a few bucks and can be streamed free on Hoopla. With a chance to pull a Robert Redford film from his list, Josh and Sean jumped at the chance to talk about this 1973 Best Picture winner with Forrest Miller, the host of Movie Night Extravaganza. It's impossible to talk about this without talking about certified hot dudes Robert Redford and Paul Newman atop the bill here. We dig into why Forrest didn't recall much of the plot of the film, how much fun the big con was, and what went into the making of this film, complete with prank wars, lawsuits, and Oscars galore. Would Forrest, Sean, and Josh each still love this movie these 15 to 20 years after the last time any of them saw it? Oh, who are we kidding? The Sting is currently available on major VOD platforms for a few bucks, and the RetroMovie app on Roku devices. It can also be found streaming extralegally courtesy of some sketchy foreign sites.Forrest Miller can be found in a whole lot of places: Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and BlueSky. Movie Night Extravaganza can be found on: YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
After Josh and Sean catch up on pod biz, they are joined by Forrest Miller, the host of Movie Night Extravaganza. How would revisiting beloved childhood staple Clue treat Kt Baldassaro (of Movie Runtime and the podcast What If I Don't Like It?) after not having watched it in at least 20 years? Would the Howard Hawksian cadence tickle her fancy as much as it had when she was young? Would the constant groping and leer of the male gaze rankle her now that she was an adult? Would the three endings still play as an ingenious plot device or did they now play as contrived and ill-conceived? The answer to those questions, along with who killed Mr. Boddy and how, lie within the confines of this episode.Clue is currently available on MGM+ and on most VOD platforms for a few bucks.Kt Baldassaro can be found in a whole lot of places: Instagram, TikTok, Letterboxd, Facebook (What If I Don't Like It?), Threads, and BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
After marking some milestones, Josh and Sean are visited by some former guests. Then Josh sits down with Kt Baldassaro, who does Movie Run Time and the podcast What If I Don't Like It and was formerly a co-host on Movie Night Extravaganza, talking growing up in New York, life in film, and about her relationship to next week's rambunctious movie with which everyone should have a relationship.Next week's film is currently available on MGM+ and on most VOD platforms for a few bucks.Kt Baldassaro can be found in a whole lot of places: Instagram, TikTok, Letterboxd, Facebook (What If I Don't Like It?), Threads, and BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
Animal-loving writer and TV/film worker Steve Miranda grew up loving The NeverEnding Story, but he hadn't seen it in roughly 30 years and his memory of the film was surprisingly hazy. Could his aversion to revisiting this film have been because part of him knew it wouldn't hold up, or would the smash international hit prove to have much more going for it than he'd have guessed? Was its reliance upon practical effects and a largely unknown cast going to be a credit to the film and director Wolfgang Petersen or would Steve be left to wish he could escape this rewatch on the back of Falkor? The NeverEnding Story is currently available to rent on most VOD platforms for a few bucks or you can watch the extended version for free here.Steve Miranda can be found on Instagram, Threads, and BlueSky.All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
After the guys discuss Canada and Sean bullies Josh about musicals, they sit down with writer and TV and film jack of all trades Steve Miranda to talk about growing up in the greater LA area, cat-dadding, and his experiences with next week's wildly popular film that everyone over 35 not named Josh Duggan watched and loved growing up.Next week's film is currently available on Crunchyroll and on most VOD platforms for a few bucks or you can watch the extended version here.Steve Miranda can be found on Instagram, Threads, and BlueSky.All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
How did revisiting Risky Business for the first time in about 30 years treat our special guest, longtime baseball scribe Scott Lucas? Was his recollection of the goings-on in the film even remotely accurate? Was Tom Cruise's then-rising star undeniable? Could a teen movie where said star ran a cathouse out of his parents' suburban Chicago home with sex worker as his co-conspirator hold up the the scrutiny of four decades of evolving social mores and norms? Would Rebecca De Mornay teach Sean he's straight? The answer to these and so many more questions lie within this episode.Risky Business is currently only available on most VOD platforms for a few bucks.Scott Lucas can be found on BlueSky and his website scottlucas.com. Josh and Sean sit down with long-time Rangers writer Scott Lucas, diving into his youth in suburban Texas and what it was like writing about baseball on the internet before it was a thing people did before getting down to brass tacks and diving into his memories involving a film that birthed a star we still have to reckon with today.Next week's film is currently only available on most VOD platforms for a few bucks.Scott Lucas can be found on BlueSky and his website scottlucas.com. Come on down to Gilley's where the women are wholly unfamiliar with brassieres, the men are all scumbags, and the mechanical bull is the only way to show you're a boss. Yes, we hopped on the bull and lasted longer than eight seconds with the 1980 romantic(?) drama Urban Cowboy, which our guest Lori Ferraro grew up watching as she and every woman in America seemed to lust after a cowboyed up John Travolta. But how would Bud Davis play in 2025? Was this still his film, or was he outmatched by Sissy (Debra Winger) at every turn? Could we still root for Bud? Did we get too much of a glimpse into a dark side of Travolta that cast a pall over his entire filmography for the rest of the '80s? Were we left hoping that Sissy would just get to spite ride the mechanical bull off into the sunset all by her lonesome? The answers to those questions and so many more are contained within. Come and listen.Urban Cowboy can be found on most VOD platforms Fubo, Philo, and MGM+.Lori Ferraro can be found on Instagram and performing at The Siren Theater in Portland. All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.

It had been a few decades since Canedy Knowles last saw the 1987 teen rom-com Can't Buy Me Love. Would time prove kind to this film for which she had a fondness? Were her memories of a film in which the kindly young nerd version of that man who would become McDreamy teaches the coolest girl in school about the value of hard work something that would bear true upon revisiting the film, or was the real premise of the film considerably darker than she'd recalled? Did Patrick Dempsey still play a cute nerdy boy, or did his character's charms wear thin quickly? Did the film still play as a cute teen romantic comedy, or did Cindy Mancini have to settle for someone who did not deserve her? Can't Buy Me Love can be found on most VOD platforms and Tubi.A custom recreation of Cindy's mother's white faux suede outfit can be found here: Custom Costumes Caprio on Etsy Canedy Knowles can be found on Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky, and at her website, canedyknowles.com.All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.

Austin's finest art handler Stewart Parker joins Sean and Josh to talk about a film they all grew up with and were revisiting with the perspective of a more discerning adult than that of their younger selves who may have been seeking out the 1985 gender-bending teen comedy and HBO staple Just One of the Guys for some of its more prurient content. Was Just One of the Guys as sex-fueled as they'd remembered? Did Bruce Springsteen's then-girlfriend Joyce Heyser afford herself well when tasked to play a teenage boy? Was the film as transgressive as one might have assumed, given its subject matter and the era of its release? Josh touches on the first round of listener feedback, his appearance on Movie Night Extravaganza to discuss Jackie Brown, and then talks briefly about this week's guest. Then Josh and Sean sit down with the best fine art handler in all of Austin (and maybe the world) Stewart Parker. We dive into what life was like before we all had the internet in our hands at all times, what it was like growing up in Odessa with a single mom who was a movie nut, and the inability of the pre-internet male to just throw away his smut, much of which ties into the film we're covering next week, which everyone grew up with a relationship to but only one of Stewart, Sean, and Josh felt like they remembered pretty well.Next week's film can be found on all VOD platforms, Tubi, and Archive.org.Stewart Parker's business, Parker Art Handling, can be found on Instagram and at its website: parkerarthandling.com. With Gabe Joyner of SVU Pod: Especially Heinous making herself comfortable in our guest's seat again this week, we grab the cellophane and hop a train to Alabama, where we'll just have to hope Chris O'Donnell isn't torn from our lives in the messiest way possible by the mode of transportation around which our lives now rotate. Along the way, we'll furtively fall in love with the Marys, but not in a way that anyone will explicitly know because Hollywood can't handle it. What Hollywood CAN handle, however, is a little cannibalism played for comedy, which sends us down some dark paths played for laughs. After getting that out of the way, they sit down with the inimitable Gabe Joyner, tattoo artist extraordinaire and co-host of SVU Pod: Especially Heinous, discussing growing up in Wisconsin, making friends while stabbing them over and over with needles, blonde facial hair, and next week's film which seemed like it was ever-present in the early '90s.Next week's film can be found on Amazon Prime through the end of June.Gabe Joyner can be found on Instagram, Threads, and her tattoo shop. SVU Pod: Especially Heinous is on hiatus, but can be found on Patreon, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and everywhere else podcasts are available. All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
