Joined by Summer Santos Webber, we talk about one of the top grossing films of the 1990s, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, a movie she so badly wanted to see she built her birthday party around it that year. How did it play now to Summer? How did it play now to Sean and Josh, who didn't have nostalgia for the film working in its favor? Would any of them be opining about building a time machine to change the past? There's only one way to get the answer to these and so many more questions about this record-breaking film. The Lost World: Jurassic Park can be streamed on Starz or can be VODed for like $4.Summer can be found on: Twitch, BlueSky, Twitter, and InstagramAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan can also be heard with co-host Adam Schwitters on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created. You can follow Unkind Rewind on: BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Threads, Twitter, and YouTubeJosh's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, Letterboxd, and SubstackSean's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, LetterboxdJoin the Munch Casts Discord: Just go here. You can find all of our information and episodes at our website: https://unkindrewind.com/Questions, comments, concerns, and general feedback can be sent to: unkindrewindpod@gmail.comOr you can call in and leave a voicemail at (507) 479-6440 and have your message played on the show.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unkind-rewind--6119307/support.
Join us as we chat with Summer Santos Webber, denizen of all corners of the internet, digging into what she remembers about one of the top grossing films of the 1990s, a movie she so badly wanted to see that it was what she did for her birthday party that year. Comic and lead singer of Riverboat Gamblers and Drakulas, Mike Wiebe joins us to revisit this surprisingly dark youth-oriented film that puts young Davey Osborne through the ringer in a Hitchcockian wrong man--er, wrong boy tale of international intrigue and kids out on the town. Kindertrauma abounds in this week's delirious ride through central San Antonio via the 1984 children's(?) film Cloak & Dagger, where our young hero played by Henry Thomas watches bodies fall around him, and eventually needs to join in on the action. Of course, one of his two friends is a precocious/grating six-year-old girl while the other is a 30-something nerd who lets these two children hang out in the back of his computer/videogame shop, so this is a totally normal movie. That the true nature of his imaginary friend who may or may not be his dad but who he definitely converses with in such a way as to force one to reckon with the unanswerable question as to whether or not our young hero is schizophrenic is just icing on the cake. Come for the Henry, but stay for the Dabney.Cloak & Dagger can be rented on most VOD sites for about $4. Or you can google "Cloak and Dagger 1984 full movie archive" to find the version on archive.org.Mike's primarily on Instagram, but you can find links to all of his projects via his Linktree page: Mike Wiebe's LinktreeAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.Josh Duggan can also be heard with co-host Adam Schwitters on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created.
This week, Sean and Josh talk with musician/comedian Mike Wiebe, who music fans would know as the frenetic frontman of both the bands Riverboat Gamblers and Drakulas and who comedy fans would know as half of the comedy duo the McCuewans in addition to his more than a decade doing stand-up. We talk about growing up in Denton, and how growing up in Texas helped make our next selection more important to him than it might have for a kid who grew up somewhere else. We also dig into kindertrauma, on-stage injuries, and much, much more. Next week's film can be rented on most VOD sites for about $4. Or you can google "[name of next week's movie] 1984 full movie archive" to find the version on archive.org.Mike's primarily on Instagram, but you can find links to all of his projects via his Linktree page: Mike Wiebe's LinktreeAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
Having rewatched the beloved teen romantasy flick from her youth, 2002's Tuck Everlasting, Karyn Raynor of Chick-Lit, with Karyn and Aubree, is forced to reckon with its highly problematic (and later stolen) premise in which a 15-year-old girl is groomed by a 104-year-old immortal man in the body of a 17-year-old boy. Poor accents, plot holes, thinly fleshed out lore, and strange choices abound, and the origins of long-running television shows not even remotely related to this property can be traced to this film, so there is tons to discuss. Would Tuck Everlasting's deficiencies sink the film for Karyn on rewatch, or would she still be able to enjoy this weird ride through pre-WWI Stars Hollow--I mean Tree Gap? Tuck Everlasting can be streamed on Disney Plus.Chick-Lit, with Karyn and Aubree can be found at a slew of places listed here: Chick-Lit LinktreeAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
Join us as we chat with Karyn Raynor of Chick-Lit, with Karyn and Aubree, digging into what she remembers about a beloved film adaptation of a teen romantasy book that was a bit of an awakening for Karyn and a movie neither Sean nor Josh had any relationship with before this podcast. We throw on the helmet and strap in for a weird, wild ride this week as we watched the 1983 sci-fi family dramedy Brainstorm, featuring the ill-fated star-crossed lovers Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood, in the film that would prove to be her last, as she died tragically and mysteriously while this film was down for the holidays. Leo Allen host of the Voluntary Input podcast and the mind behind the music project Profound Simplicity joins us to discuss this gem from his youth. What would our lives be like if we suddenly had a virtual reality experience that stimulated all of our senses like in this film? How could this technology be exploited and what's one of the obvious prurient first uses that it would be used for? Don't worry, those questions--along with many others--are addressed in this week's installment of the Unkind Rewind.Brainstorm can be streamed for free at Hoopla or on the Internet Archive.Leo Allen can be found at his website: leojallenjr.comHis music released under the moniker Profound Simplicity can be found on YouTube: youtube.com/@profoundsimplicity His podcast, Voluntary Input, should hopefully be back up and running in early 2025, and can be found here or wherever you get your pod on.All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
After Sean and Josh catch up on things after a few months down between Seasons 1 and 2, Josh sits down with our special guest for this week and next, Leo Allen, who shares a soft spot in his heart for next week's film, which is simultaneously not well known and yet somewhat significant, historically speaking. It's a great time with Leo. Disclaimer: there is some election postmortem talk near the top of the episode, so once that starts, you can skip ahead to about the 10:20 mark if you'd like to avoid that.Next week's film can be streamed for free at Hoopla or on the Internet Archive.Leo Allen can be found at his website: leojallenjr.comHis music released under the moniker Profound Simplicity can be found on YouTube: youtube.com/@profoundsimplicity His podcast, Voluntary Input, should hopefully be back up and running in January of 2025, and can be found here or wherever you get your pod on.All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
At the age of 9, a friend's dad traumatized his own son and Munch My Benson's own Adam Schwitters by gleefully letting them watch the darkly sexual and extremely messed up 1987 Mickey Rourke/Lisa Bonet/Robert De Niro gothic horror noir set in 1950s New York and New Orleans, Angel Heart. The first time Josh heard this, he was struck dumb at the notion that such a young child had been allowed to see such an ADULT movie, so when Unkind Rewind was born, there was absolutely no way that they weren't going to dive into Adam's FORMATIVE experience with such an age-inappropriate film.Angel Heart is currently streaming on Hoopla, Kanopy, and PlutoTV.Adam can be heard weekly alongside Josh on their Law & Order: SVU podcast Munch My Benson, which is 220 episodes in and counting: BlueSky, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Twitter His personal social media accounts are: Twitter and BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created.
After Sean and Josh prepare you for the coming weeks without the podcast in the penultimate episode of Season 1, they welcome occasional Unkind Rewind co-host and full-time Munch My Benson co-host Adam Schwitters to the podcast. When Adam was a wee lad of 8, he saw a film that he was roughly ten years too young to see. The first time Josh heard this, he guffawed and when this podcast came into being there was absolutely no way that they weren't going to dive into Adam's FORMATIVE experience with next week's film.Next week's film is currently streaming on Hoopla, Kanopy, and PlutoTV.Adam can be heard weekly alongside Josh on their Law & Order: SVU podcast Munch My Benson, which is 220 episodes in and counting: BlueSky, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Twitter His personal social media accounts are: Twitter and BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created.
Tasha Crawford--half of the inimitable hosting duo of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit podcast SVU POD: Especially Heinous--joins us this week to expose to the possibility of ruination The Craft, a formative film she loved as a teen. How would this very 1996 film play in 2024? Would its racism both on and off camera shock? Would the form of feminism it purports to wield play today? Despite having the largest diving team in the country by more than a score of athletes, did it hew close enough to high school of the '90s to pass the smell test? Was the cringiest aspect of the film what Tasha expected, or did it come from a different area altogether? Most importantly, would The Craft still be a movie Tasha could enjoy in her [age redacted]?The Craft is currently streaming on Max or can be rented on most VOD platforms for $3.99. Or you could just search for the film's name and full movie and find it pretty easily...Tasha's podcast SVU POD: Especially Heinous can be found at their website and their Patreon along with the following social media pages: Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and TwitterAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan and Adam Schwitters can also be heard on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created. You can follow Unkind Rewind on: BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Threads, Twitter, and YouTubeJosh's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, Letterboxd, and SubstackSean's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, LetterboxdAdam's Social Media: Twitter and BlueSkyJoin the Munch Casts Discord: Just go here.

Having rewatched the nightmare fuel that is 1985's Return to Oz, we sat back down with our special guest, Max Rieper, the managing editor for Royals Review, who contrary to his peers not only loved this film as a child but felt this film was superior to its predecessor The Wizard of Oz because it was more faithful to the L. Frank Baum books. That it was darker and bleaker didn't bother young Max, but how would its vision of the Land of Oz and its new traveling companions for a much younger Dorothy (played by a Fairuza Balk who enjoyed her 10th birthday while shooting this film) play to a grown-up Max? And if the test of time ended up being cruel to Return to Oz, how would it play to Max's memories of a very strange film? Was his recall on point or were there gaping holes in what he remembered the film being, having not seen it in more than 35 years?Return to Oz is available to stream for free in the US on Disney+.Max can be found at Royals Review and manages its social media accounts: Twitter, Facebook, BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan can also be heard on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created.
After Sean tells of a harrowing trip to the cinema, we sit down with our very special guest for this week and next, Max Rieper, the managing editor for Royals Review, to take a trip down memory lane and discuss his childhood standing on an island loving this next film. Having rewatched the 1987 Jon Cryer star vehicle Hiding Out, we sit back down with our special guest, professor of modern Middle Eastern history Brian Mann to peer deep into the soul of eight-year-old Brian to divine what it was about this tale of a nearly 30-year-old stockbroker on the run from the mob embedding himself in a Delaware High School and doing everything he can to stop himself from bedding a high school girl who he ultimately follows to college. Tip your cap to the '80s? Strap in for a fun ride, and find out what Jon Cryer had to say about Josh having just seen this film when fate thrust them together in real life.Hiding Out is currently available to stream for free in the US on Prime Video with Ads. Brian can be found on: LetterboxdAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan can also be heard on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created.
This week, Josh and Sean dig into the past of modern Middle Eastern history professor, Brian Mann, getting down to brass tacks on an entry in a certain star actor's canon who truly resonated with Brian when he was peaking in life in late elementary school. This week we jumped on The Beastmaster train with writer and musician Jeremy Steen and got a helluva ride. Did Jeremy's passion for this film influence his dietary practices? Does he still feel comfortable being known as a "Beastmaster guy" to anyone who's seen his framed Beastmaster poster? Has his shipment of body oil come in yet? In this latest foray into the Unkind Rewind, we get to know writer and musician Jeremy Steen. Way before he was fronting or playing bass in bands in Austin or having his work published at the Oxford American and various literary journals, Jeremy had a passion for a film which may or may not have influenced his dietary practices and which definitely instilled in him a love of a certain strange domesticated animal--a love we'll have to wait until after next week's episode and see if he'll be taking to a whole new level by bringing one of those cute little critters home to live with him.Next week's film (you'll have to listen to discover what it is) is presently available to stream for free in the US on Prime. Jeremy can be found on: BlueSky and LetterboxdJeremy Steen's bands can be found here:Flesh Lights (Never See Snow LP, Muscle Pop LP, You're A Stealer EP, "No Longer" b/w "You Don't Know")Dry GuyLung LettersJeremy was interviewed at Rejoinder Mag (5 Questions with Jeremy Steen), in conjunction with the publication of four short related pieces grouped as Not One Domino Shall Fall:The Worst and the DullestBig GameA Reason to BelieveRemember (Walking in the Sand)His piece at the Oxford American about his experience on the set of Terrence Malick's divisive film Song to Song: Background Noise. In this Main Event, we get back together with best-selling sci-fi author Daniel H. Wilson (Robopocalypse and Robogenesis and the Michael Crichton sequel The Andromeda Evolution) to revisit a staple of his childhood that was surprisingly scary today, The Gate. Starring a very young Stephen Dorff, along with an eventual Satanist, Kenny Powers's SIL, and an actress creepily sexualized, this entry in the horror-targeted-at-tweens subgenre had some serious special effects bonafides despite one's assumptions given its era. It also left Daniel impressed that he was able to withstand its scares as a child, which is all the more surprising when hearing that it was supposed to be MUCH harsher than the finished product ended up being. The Gate is presently available to stream for free in the US on Tubi, Prime, Plex, and The Roku Channel. And a brand new Vestron Steelbook Special Edition Blu-Ray was just released on May 14, 2024, exclusive to Wal-Mart.Daniel H. Wilson can be reached via his website: https://www.danielhwilson.com/You can follow his author page on Facebook for any Daniel H. Wilson news. And keep your eyes peeled for his upcoming novel courtesy of Doubleday, titled Heliopause, which should hit shelves late in 2024 or early in 2025. All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Josh Duggan can also be heard with his co-host Adam Schwitters on the seminal Law & Order: SVU podcast, Munch My Benson.Play CineQuote, your daily movie quote trivia game which Sean McGrath co-created. You can follow Unkind Rewind on: BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Threads, Twitter, and YouTubeJosh's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, Letterboxd, and SubstackSean's Social Media: BlueSky, Twitter, LetterboxdJoin the Munch Casts Discord: Just go here.Questions, comments, concerns, and general feedback can be sent to: unkindrewindpod@gmail.comOr you can call in and leave a voicemail at (507) 479-6440 and have your message played on the show.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unkind-rewind--6119307/support.
In this lively installment of the Unkind Rewind, we get to know roboticist, author, and TV host Daniel H. Wilson. Before he wrote best-selling novels like Robopocalypse and Robogenesis and the Michael Crichton sequel The Andromeda Evolution, Daniel got into some mischief for which we assume the statute of limitations has run out on and is probably safe for broadcast. Tune in for stories revolving around church busing, kids on motorcycles, and hijacking phone lines to call in to the DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince 1-900 number, stay for the preliminary discussion of a youth-oriented horror film about to get a Steelbook Vestron Video Blu-Ray release.Next week's film (you'll have to listen to discover what it is) is presently available to stream for free in the US on Tubi, Prime, Plex, and The Roku Channel.Daniel H.
