After dispatching of last week's film Gymkata from atop a pair of pommel horses at the village's center, Sean and Josh sit down with Conan Neutron, of the weekly podcasts Conan Neutron's Protonic Reversal and Movie Night Extravaganza and of the rock band Conan Neutron & the Secret Friends, whose brand new album The Way of the Neutron drops on March 20th and can currently be partially streamed on Bandcamp. In our getting to know you session with Conan, we dig into his life as a musician, his forays into podcasting, and his youth spent in less glamorous parts of California. We also get to the bottom of what he remembers about a seminal youth-in-revolt tale that announces the arrival of the 1990s and presages the medium you're devouring right now. Next week's film is hard to find outside of physical media, presumably because of its soundtrack, but *pssst* it can be found on the Internet Archive. Greg Schaum--former Royals post-game radio host, baseball advisor/agent, Director of Player Development, and current Partner and Director of Sports Recruiting at Klutch MFM--joins us to look back at the film he grew up loving that boldly asked the question: What if we took an Olympic-level athlete who may or may not be charismatic enough to carry a major motion picture and tried to turn him into a martial arts movie star, complete with an entirely new discipline built around his legitimately impressive skillset? Did Kurt Thomas earn his Razzie nomination? Were background actors maimed while making this film? Was said maiming committed to celluloid? Did production seriously just hire out their extras from an asylum and compensate them with a buffet and alcohol? The answers to these and so many other questions lie within this triumphant episode of the Unkind Rewind.Gymkata is available on most VOD platforms, but it can also be found on the Internet Archive. After putting a bow on St. Elmo's Fire and discussing the Oscars, Josh and Sean sit down with Greg Schaum, former baseball advisor/agent, Director of Player Development, Royals post-game radio host and current Partner and Director of Sports Recruiting at Klutch MFM. We talk chasing dreams, getting the acting bug, and growing up with one foot in the world of sports with the other in film, before leaping into his past with a delightfully bizarre film that in its own special way speaks to the duality of young Greg.Next week's film is available on most VOD platforms, but it can also be found on the Internet Archive. Chelsea Cain--the best-selling author of Heartsick and the subsequent five books in the Archie Sheridan & Gretchen Lowell series, which count themselves amongst the more than a dozen books and comic book series on her bibliography--sits down with us to talk about the movie from which the term "Brat Pack" sprung unflatteringly, the 1985 Joel Schumacher film starring Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham, St. Elmo's Fire. How did the messiest post-graduation year in history for a group of friends(?) play after decades of not having seen this movie? How did every single non-Andrew McCarthy male character read in the 21st Century? Do all of the very best friends commit felonies against one another before agreeing that they've graduated to being brunch people? The only way to find out the answer to these and so many other pressing questions is to strap in and venture into the Unkind Rewind, but bring a jacket this week, we wouldn't want you to die from catching a chill.St. Elmo's Fire is somehow only available on VOD right now, despite nearly always being available on a streaming platform, but there's a pretty good chance you've seen and remember this one and industrious denizens of the internet can surely find it by searching for "st. elmo's fire full movie free" and clicking on the video that has a runtime just a dozen minutes under two hours... After tying up some Phase IV loose ends, Josh and Sean sit down with Chelsea Cain, the best-selling author of Heartsick and the subsequent five books in the Archie Sheridan & Gretchen Lowell series, which count themselves amongst the more than a dozen books and comic book series on her bibliography. After commiserating over having such horrifying search histories on account of their creative endeavors that they're probably on watch lists and extolling the virtues of Tom Selleck's legs, they dive into Chelsea's childhood spent on communes, traumatic haircuts, sexiest men, and aspirations to be people you couldn't fully understand as a child but had seemed cool in movies.Next week's film is somehow only available on VOD right now, despite nearly always being available on a streaming platform, but there's a pretty good chance you've seen and remember this one... Neither Josh nor Sean had ever even heard of Phase IV when Mightie Minx submitted her list, but when they saw that it was the only feature directed by graphic design legend Saul Bass--who'd created some of the most striking opening title sequences in cinematic history--they knew they couldn't choose anything else. So what did Saul Bass make with this one shot at the helm? A movie pitting man against ant. Er, ANTS. Like a couple billion of them. Enough to get us using "anted" as a verb. Shockingly, the movie slaps so much that Josh ended up buying a physical copy of it afterward, a first in this podcast's history. While things are looking pretty rough out there, at least we can look forward to the rule of our new tiny overlords.Phase IV can be streamed on Kanopy for free and on Archive.org. After catching up on pod business from the Dreamscape eps with Ted Douglass, UKRW sits down with the Mightiest Minx in the former Royals/Chiefs Twitterverse that's since migrated to other platforms, Tori. If you thought last week's film was an odd one, wait until you see what Tori brought along this time. Directed by a luminary artist, starring just a handful of actors opposite millions of tiny adversaries whose goal was the enslavement of mankind, this was one neither Josh nor Sean had ever heard of, but one they HAD to do when they read up on it. It's also the only film in this podcast's early history that either of them would end up buying after seeing it. We've got a gem in store for you. Portland-based actor, sketch comic, writer, director, producer, and bon vivant, Ted Douglass comes back this week to discuss the largely forgotten Dennis Quaid star-vehicle from 1984, Dreamscape. Do the film's creators have grounds for a lawsuit against Christopher Nolan for having totally stolen the idea of Inception from this film? Can the film redeem itself after having its hero commit one of the most heinous acts we've seen a hero commit yet in this podcast's history? When matched up in a cast with three two-time Academy Award nominees, what actor lays waste to all of them and the star of the film? The answer to these and so many other questions are answered in this installment of the Unkind Rewind.Dreamscape can be streamed in soooo many places. Prime, Peacock, Hoopla, Kanopy, Shout, Roku, Plex, probably more. After Josh and Sean catch up on pod business from the last two movies covered, they sit down with Portland multi-hyphenate creative (he can write, he can act, he can direct, he can produce--what can't he do???) Ted Douglass for a raucous journey through his childhood spent mostly in suburban Portland, diving into juvenile hot dog scamming, renting movies to Kevin Duckworth, and a whole host of other miscellany. And of course, next week's strange film and what Ted is able to recall about it while being told on mic what has been chosen from his list of films he submitted is discussed at length. Joined by Summer Santos Webber, we talk about one of the top grossing films of the 1990s, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, a movie she so badly wanted to see she built her birthday party around it that year. How did it play now to Summer? How did it play now to Sean and Josh, who didn't have nostalgia for the film working in its favor? Would any of them be opining about building a time machine to change the past? There's only one way to get the answer to these and so many more questions about this record-breaking film. The Lost World: Jurassic Park can be streamed on Starz or can be VODed for like $4.Summer can be found on: Twitch, BlueSky, Twitter, Instagram, and FanslyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Comic and lead singer of Riverboat Gamblers and Drakulas, Mike Wiebe joins us to revisit this surprisingly dark youth-oriented film that puts young Davey Osborne through the ringer in a Hitchcockian wrong man--er, wrong boy tale of international intrigue and kids out on the town. Kindertrauma abounds in this week's delirious ride through central San Antonio via the 1984 children's(?) film Cloak & Dagger, where our young hero played by Henry Thomas watches bodies fall around him, and eventually needs to join in on the action. Of course, one of his two friends is a precocious/grating six-year-old girl while the other is a 30-something nerd who lets these two children hang out in the back of his computer/videogame shop, so this is a totally normal movie. That the true nature of his imaginary friend who may or may not be his dad but who he definitely converses with in such a way as to force one to reckon with the unanswerable question as to whether or not our young hero is schizophrenic is just icing on the cake. Come for the Henry, but stay for the Dabney.Cloak & Dagger can be rented on most VOD sites for about $4. This week, Sean and Josh talk with musician/comedian Mike Wiebe, who music fans would know as the frenetic frontman of both the bands Riverboat Gamblers and Drakulas and who comedy fans would know as half of the comedy duo the McCuewans in addition to his more than a decade doing stand-up. We talk about growing up in Denton, and how growing up in Texas helped make our next selection more important to him than it might have for a kid who grew up somewhere else. We also dig into kindertrauma, on-stage injuries, and much, much more. Next week's film can be rented on most VOD sites for about $4. Having rewatched the beloved teen romantasy flick from her youth, 2002's Tuck Everlasting, Karyn Raynor of Chick-Lit, with Karyn and Aubree, is forced to reckon with its highly problematic (and later stolen) premise in which a 15-year-old girl is groomed by a 104-year-old immortal man in the body of a 17-year-old boy. Poor accents, plot holes, thinly fleshed out lore, and strange choices abound, and the origins of long-running television shows not even remotely related to this property can be traced to this film, so there is tons to discuss. Would Tuck Everlasting's deficiencies sink the film for Karyn on rewatch, or would she still be able to enjoy this weird ride through pre-WWI Stars Hollow--I mean Tree Gap? We throw on the helmet and strap in for a weird, wild ride this week as we watched the 1983 sci-fi family dramedy Brainstorm, featuring the ill-fated star-crossed lovers Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood, in the film that would prove to be her last, as she died tragically and mysteriously while this film was down for the holidays. Leo Allen host of the Voluntary Input podcast and the mind behind the music project Profound Simplicity joins us to discuss this gem from his youth. What would our lives be like if we suddenly had a virtual reality experience that stimulated all of our senses like in this film? How could this technology be exploited and what's one of the obvious prurient first uses that it would be used for? Don't worry, those questions--along with many others--are addressed in this week's installment of the Unkind Rewind.Brainstorm can be streamed for free at Hoopla or on the Internet Archive.Leo Allen can be found at his website: leojallenjr.comHis music released under the moniker Profound Simplicity can be found on YouTube: youtube.com/@profoundsimplicity His podcast, Voluntary Input, should hopefully be back up and running in early 2025, and can be found here or wherever you get your pod on.All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. After Sean and Josh catch up on things after a few months down between Seasons 1 and 2, Josh sits down with our special guest for this week and next, Leo Allen, who shares a soft spot in his heart for next week's film, which is simultaneously not well known and yet somewhat significant, historically speaking. It's a great time with Leo. Disclaimer: there is some election postmortem talk near the top of the episode, so once that starts, you can skip ahead to about the 10:20 mark if you'd like to avoid that.Next week's film can be streamed for free at Hoopla or on the Internet Archive.Leo Allen can be found at his website: leojallenjr.comHis music released under the moniker Profound Simplicity can be found on YouTube: youtube.com/@profoundsimplicity His podcast, Voluntary Input, should hopefully be back up and running in January of 2025, and can be found here or wherever you get your pod on.All music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. At the age of 9, a friend's dad traumatized his own son and Munch My Benson's own Adam Schwitters by gleefully letting them watch the darkly sexual and extremely messed up 1987 Mickey Rourke/Lisa Bonet/Robert De Niro gothic horror noir set in 1950s New York and New Orleans, Angel Heart. The first time Josh heard this, he was struck dumb at the notion that such a young child had been allowed to see such an ADULT movie, so when Unkind Rewind was born, there was absolutely no way that they weren't going to dive into Adam's FORMATIVE experience with such an age-inappropriate film.Angel Heart is currently streaming on Hoopla, Kanopy, and PlutoTV.Adam can be heard weekly alongside Josh on their Law & Order: SVU podcast Munch My Benson, which is 220 episodes in and counting: BlueSky, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Twitter His personal social media accounts are: Twitter and BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. After Sean and Josh prepare you for the coming weeks without the podcast in the penultimate episode of Season 1, they welcome occasional Unkind Rewind co-host and full-time Munch My Benson co-host Adam Schwitters to the podcast. When Adam was a wee lad of 8, he saw a film that he was roughly ten years too young to see. The first time Josh heard this, he guffawed and when this podcast came into being there was absolutely no way that they weren't going to dive into Adam's FORMATIVE experience with next week's film.Next week's film is currently streaming on Hoopla, Kanopy, and PlutoTV.Adam can be heard weekly alongside Josh on their Law & Order: SVU podcast Munch My Benson, which is 220 episodes in and counting: BlueSky, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Twitter His personal social media accounts are: Twitter and BlueSkyAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave. Tasha Crawford--half of the inimitable hosting duo of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit podcast SVU POD: Especially Heinous--joins us this week to expose to the possibility of ruination The Craft, a formative film she loved as a teen. How would this very 1996 film play in 2024? Would its racism both on and off camera shock? Would the form of feminism it purports to wield play today? Despite having the largest diving team in the country by more than a score of athletes, did it hew close enough to high school of the '90s to pass the smell test? Was the cringiest aspect of the film what Tasha expected, or did it come from a different area altogether? Most importantly, would The Craft still be a movie Tasha could enjoy in her [age redacted]?The Craft is currently streaming on Max or can be rented on most VOD platforms for $3.99. Or you could just search for the film's name and full movie and find it pretty easily...Tasha's podcast SVU POD: Especially Heinous can be found at their website and their Patreon along with the following social media pages: Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and TwitterAll music in the show was composed by Divorcio Suave.
