I also noticed the inconsistent messaging around gender stereotypes in this novel and also found it confusing. From the little I know about Collins, he may have been considered somewhat of a progressive and/or feminist today, which would go a long way toward explaining what I also noted was Collins' fondness for Marian. One of the things that confused me was the difficulty I had remembering that Collins didn't have the benefit of the extensive feminist/gender theory that we do today, which would have probably made his intent regarding gender more coherent and certain. I thought the book dragged in the middle a bit, too, but enjoyed it and The Moonstone very much. This episode was enjoyable for the thoughtful review and the interesting background info.
