"Love for ever - Louise"Throughout 1935, investigators in Kansas City struggled to not only determine the identity of the man calling himself "Roland T. Owen," but also had to untangle the strange circumstances that had led up to his death. It was clear that someone had wished to inflict pain upon Owen, but police could only speculate why.Meanwhile, the family of a missing young man from Birmingham, Alabama had been unable to locate any trace of him for over a year. Their search would end up intersecting with the ongoing investigation from Kansas City in the waning days of 1936, but in doing so, would end up raising even more questions...Part 2/2Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.
"My impression of this man from the expressions on his face and from his actions was that he was either worried about something or afraid."On Wednesday, 2 January 1935, a young man arrived at the Hotel President in Kansas City, Missouri. Claiming to be from Los Angeles, he told the front desk his name was Roland T. Owen and requested an interior room several floors up. Staff there accommodated him, assigning him a room on the tenth floor that overlooked the hotel's courtyard.Over the next two days, people would recall strange run-ins with Owen, including a few peculiar experiences in his room with hotel staff. But just two days later, after repeated attempts at rousing this guest for his morning wake-up call, a bellhop would make a grisly discovery inside of room 1046...Part 1/2Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.

"They would feel the need to wait for higher blood pressure, wait for a higher fever - really got to justify this one - bleed a little bit more."On the evening of 18 August 2022, Amber Thurman was rushed to the Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, Georgia. The 28-year-old single mother had been experiencing cramping and bleeding for days, and was beginning to vomit blood. After losing consciousness, her boyfriend had called 9-1-1 and requested an ambulance. After arriving at the hospital that evening, doctors would diagnose Amber with an infection that was quickly evolving into sepsis. They'd learn that Amber had recently undergone a medication abortion and needed a life-saving procedure known as a dilation and curettage (D&C). However, because of the recent repeal of Roe v. Wade, as well as Georgia's pre-existing abortion ban, doctors hesitated to perform the D&C. Meanwhile, Amber's condition worsened...The ProPublica article on Amber Thurman can be found at https://www.propublica.org/article/georgia-abortion-ban-amber-thurman-deathThe Associated Press article on women being turned away from emergency rooms can be found at https://apnews.com/article/pregnant-women-emergency-room-ectopic-er-edd66276d2f6c412c988051b618fb8f9Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.

Having just started her senior year at Penn State, the 21-year-old was still getting over a recent breakup but had a fun Halloween with her friends, dancing until the early morning hours of November 1st.At around 4:00 AM, a friend dropped Cindy off at her apartment, but didn't wait for her to step inside before driving off. In the days to come, it would become clear that something happened to Cindy in the vital minutes that followed, but the mystery of her strange and abrupt disappearance endures to this day...Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.

"A first responder unwilling to place the lives of the innocent above their own safety should consider another career field."School shootings have become a tragic and recurring part of American life, with events like Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Parkland forever altering how we think about safety in our schools. Each incident has reignited debates about gun control, mental health, and the responsibility of those tasked with protecting students. Yet, despite the changes in policy and heightened awareness, this endless cycle of violence continues to haunt entire communities. In May 2022, the town of Uvalde, Texas, became the site of another devastating school shooting that shocked the nation. The heartbreaking loss of young lives and the unfolding details of the attack raised disturbing questions about what went wrong. As the story emerged, it was clear this tragedy would stand out not just for its overwhelming horror but for the unsettling revelations it left behind in its wake...Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.
"Meet me at 2:00 PM at the Greyhound bus station. You know he's dead. If you want to know who killed him, I have the proof."In the summer of 1979, two youngsters in West Virginia struck up a fling. 25-year-old Mazie Mae Sigmon-Palmer was recently divorced and 18-year-old Jay Farley was fresh out of high school. Both were in transitory phases of their lives and recognized that their relationship was likely temporary, but they seemed to be enjoying it while it lasted. On the evening of July 14th, the two met up at a nightclub in downtown Charleston, called the Roaring Twenties. There, they hung out for a bit and even talked with some friends of theirs. But at some point that night, both would vanish. It wasn't until years later that evidence surfaced revealing what had happened to one of them, but the circumstances of their initial disappearance - and what led up to it - remain clouded in mystery...Researched & written by Bethany BransonHosted & produced by Micheal WhelanMusic composed and created by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.

"She was wanting to go out and see somebody. She wouldn't tell me who." On the morning of March 6th, 2012, the body of thirteen-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam was found inside a locked baseball dugout at a public park. Jessica, who went to school just a stone's throw away from this park, had been acting up in the months before her death. She had begun rebelling - as most teenagers do - but had begun hanging around a rather rough crowd. In a final act of defiance, she had stormed out of her mother's apartment without telling her where she was going or who she was meeting up with.Over the next several years, detectives would struggle to determine why Jessica had been targeted by a particularly violent killer. It wasn't until August of 2014 that investigators began to set their sights on a suspect: a young man named Ryan Roberts... Written, researched, hosted, and produced by Micheal WhelanThis is an episode of the Patreon exclusive show, Resolved. "Hello? Is it me you're looking for?"In November of 2014, 6-year-old Julia Potter went missing. She was last seen in the care of her father, Jason, who'd had a scheduled visit with Julia that fateful weekend. As police would later learn, Jason had willingly fled from his North Seattle home, having informed his lawyers beforehand that he was "going off the grid."In the years that have passed, rumors have swirled around where Jason and Julia have been. Some theorize that Jason's family and friends, scattered throughout western Washington, have been providing them shelter. Police speculate that the two may have fled to Asia. Others believe the two may be living in the wilderness of Washington state. However, nearly a decade after Julia's abduction, her mother continues to hold out hope for her safe return...Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanMusic composed and created by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.
This episode contains two separate, unrelated stories from the Patreon archive. In 2013, a user on 4chan posted audio from an alleged radio hijacking that was purported to have taken place in the mid-1990s. Since then, theories have sprung up that the station affected, New York's WKCR, was hijacked in 1995, while others speculate that the audio itself is fabricated. In 1995, the body of 38-year-old Kathy Struckhoff was found alongside a road in New Port Richey, Florida. She was believed to have last been seen speaking to a suspicious man at a nearby bar, and investigators speculated that the man had been her killer. Episode researched, written, hosted, and produced by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerThis episode is sponsored by Factor, who are offering listeners of Unresolved 50% off their first box as well as an additional 20% on their next month. "We think that the person or persons... sought him out specifically. We don't think that this was a random act of violence that could have been anybody. We think that they specifically sought after James Duckett."On the morning of 10 November 2008, Katherine Nichols dropped by the home of her younger brother in Shelbyville, Kentucky. Jim Duckett, a 43-year-old U.S. Army veteran, had not been seen or heard from in more than a day, having been a no-show at his church the prior morning. Attempts to reach him via telephone had been unsuccessful, and his truck was missing from his driveway.Katherine had actually dropped by Jim's home the night prior to check in on him, but was unable to see much inside. The lights inside had been turned off, except for a single bathroom light. "How can a child be missing for two years - or even a second?"On 19 January 2024, a 9-1-1 call was received by authorities in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The caller told dispatchers that her adopted son, 17-year-old Blake Deven, had gone missing. Strangely, though, she was unable to identify where she'd last seen him - or when. While police would originally label Blake a runaway, that would change in the months ahead. Two months later, police were again called out to the Deven home on an unrelated matter. From there, however, it became apparent to investigators that something was amiss. Not only had Blake been missing for approximately two years, but they would determine that another family member of his, 27-year-old London Deven, had not been seen since 2019...To learn more, visit the FBI website at the following link:https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/kidnap/london-devenResearch, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanMusic composed and created by Micheal WhelanAdditional music includes "Unresolved Mysteries" by Ailsa Traves (podcast theme song, end credits)Learn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.

Just hours beforehand, her family had received an unintentional call from her in which it sounded like she was being physically abused. Nobody spoke with or saw the Dermonds, who were absent from their usual routines. Both were conspicuously absent not only through the weekend, but early into the next week. Those press conferences were absolutely ridiculous - those wannabe reporters didn't bother to listen to a single word the sheriff said, instead asking about stuff that's been mentioned before or is part of the investigation.

sad circumstances. I don't understand how this case could be unsolved. the most likely killer is the "family friend". it is obvious that he, after being shown some decency, started moving in on the family and taking over. I am quite weirded out by all the excuses the host is making for him. he is not "labeled as" a killer -- he is an actual murderer. he did not behave bizarrely in the aftermath of a murder because he had the presence of mind to know he would be the most obvious suspect -- he had previously threatened a different victim before murdering her and attempting to murder two others, therefore showing a disregard of caring about being the most obvious suspect. he is just an effing dangerous man who got a slap on the wrist for murdering a woman so he very likely did it again. no motive??? some men don't like the word "no". maybe in this case, "no, you may not take my car or take money out of my account". or.... maybe the boy's "acting out" and signs of distress about his mother
