Let’s be real. This year, everything since March has been soooooooo shit. People suffered tragic losses, millions lost their jobs, and heroic key workers have kept everything going, often without proper PPE. Meanwhile, many of our grandparents and immuno-compromised people are still indoors. But quarantining has offered, mostly the luckiest among us, an opportunity to reflect on our lives and, potentially, to reset them. Is there anything that happened to us over the last few months that has changed our lives for the better? For our last episode of Covid-19 Fact Checkers, guest host Moeed Majeed talks to Activist and Educator Nim Ralph, Social Entrepreneur Emily Mathieson, and Brent-based Young Creator Sophie AJ to discuss whether we should be returning to the ‘old normal’, or not. This episode was produced by Lucas Fothergill, Rose de Larrabeiti, Jess Lawson and Moeed Majeed.  Hosted on Acast. Has the news media behaved responsibility when covering the COVID-19 pandemic, or is it guilty of playing on people’s fears just for more clicks? Brentonian Mehaira puts this question to The Guardian’s Media Editor Jim Waterson, and she and host Amelia don’t pull their punches when holding the media to account. This episode was produced by the VENT Production Team: Rose de Larrabeiti, Lucas Fothergill, Jess Lawson and Moeed Majeed and is part of our bonus series - Covid-19 Fact Checkers.  Hosted on Acast. This episode, we've had a request from another young person in Brent. 17 year old Rain is a genderqueer lesbian, but it took them a long time to fully understand their gender identity. Rain has asked if we can make an episode about rejecting the gender binary, so we've invited host of BBC Sounds Podcast, NB: My non-binary life, Caitlin Benedict, to talk to Rain about their gender journey.Just a heads up, this episode contains mention of self harm, so take care listening. This episode was produced by the VENT Production Team: Jess Lawson, Emilia Gill, Moeed Majeed and Arlie Adlington. So, did this really all begin with a bat? It’s pretty impressive how quickly we’ve all adapted to living in a global pandemic, but it’s time for a reality check - how the fuck did we get here in the first place?Rachel Nuwer, journalist and author of Poached: Inside the Dark World of Animal Trafficking takes host Suprina and Brent resident Kamiah back to the beginning of all this - to Wuhan in China and back to the seafood and meat market where it’s believed COVID-19 originated. She describes how these kinds of markets are the perfect laboratory for potentially lethal viruses to jump from animals to humans and how, if we don’t change our ways when it comes to the illegal and legal wildlife trade, it’s only a matter of time before the next global pandemic…This episode was produced by the VENT Production Team: Rose de Larrabeiti, Lucas Fothergill, Jess Lawson and Moeed Majeed and is part of our bonus series - Covid-19 Fact Checkers.   Hosted on Acast. Today we’re joined by Tracey Ford, Founder of JAGS Foundation, Fellow Brentonian Anjali Joshi, and Writer and Speaker Oumou Longley on to talk about one law which massively effects young people in Brent and across the UK. It’s GCSE results day... except this year - no-one sat the exams. After grade A, A-Level confusion with students finding themselves down-graded by an algorithm and losing university places, the Government made a U-turn and dropped the system ahead of today’s GCSE results. This came as a big relief to 16 year old Kritika who collects her grades today. But, with results now based significantly on teacher assessments and predicted grades, she’s worried it still might affect black and ethnic minority students the hardest. Kuba Shand-Baptiste, Commissioning Editor and columnist for Independent Voices, the opinion section of The Independent, joins Kritika and VENT host Amelia to talk this one out. This episode was produced by the VENT Production Team: Rose de Larrabeiti, Lucas Fothergill, Jess Lawson and Moeed Majeed and is part of our bonus series - Covid-19 Fact Checkers.  Hosted on Acast. Death is one of the only definite things in our lives, but it’s something that a lot of people find hard to talk about, and hard to process. The News Media’s lens has been squarely focussed on the COVID19 pandemic for months, but what else has happened that's gone under the radar? Brent resident JJ has been wondering exactly that, especially when it comes to Brexit and how the UK leaving Europe might affect his hopes to study abroad. VICE Senior Staff Writer Ruby Lott-Lavigna updates host Suprina and JJ on Brexit and some other important stories we might have missed in lockdown. This episode was produced by the VENT Production Team: Rose de Larrabeiti, Lucas Fothergill, Jess Lawson, Emilia Gill and Moeed Majeed and is part of our bonus series - Covid-19 Fact Checkers.  Hosted on Acast. A lot of what's happening in the world lately has left Nuradean and Suprina feeling really powerless. As individual young people, it can sometimes feel like we're just shouting into the void. So, for International Youth Day, we're thinking about what actual power we have as young people to make impactful change. We've invited filmmaker and NHS hospital cleaner Hassan Akkad and Third Wave Fund Communications Officer, Monica Trinidad, to talk about different forms of activism, and how young people can get involved. This episode was produced by the VENT Production Team: Jess Lawson, Emilia Gill, Moeed Majeed and Arlie Adlington.
