Episode Notes
On this episode, How I’m Setting Goals for 2021.
In preparing for today and setting up my tool to write down and track my goals, I realized I’ve been doing this technique since 2017! This trip down memory road reminded me that back in 2017, Venture Out hadn’t even started and my main goal then was to draw comic strips. I’m appreciative that I have this to look back upon and celebrate the accomplishments along the way.
The technique I’ve been using is called the Epic Life Planner, which is described in all its glory here! Please give it a read, download the free tool, and you can make your own plan for 2021 too.
I, of course being the overachiever, did the bonus step by writing down the 100 things I want to accomplish in my life. (I’ve only been able to come up with 51 out of the 100 so far, but adding more every year!) So I refer to that list to now determine what I’m going to focus on in 2021.
My four goals are Venture Out more (#producing), trip to Yellowstone (#adventure), take a Mountaineering Course (#skillbuilding), and a little bit of Astronomy & Photography (#skillbuilding).
If you notice, the key here is to have a diverse portfolio of goals. They should be a combo of producing (“look, I made that!”), experiencing an adventure (“wow, I can’t believe I’m here!”), and skill-building (“I just leveled up!”).
Diverse goals are important because it’s both short term and long term. The adventure allows us to immediately enjoy life and check off one item on our life bucket list. The skill-building is a building block that’ll allow us one day to reach higher, such as hosting a photo art gallery exhibit or navigating a sailboat by the stars. The producing because it contributes back to society and could open doors to unknown, bigger opportunities.

On this episode, Conduct Your 2020 Year In Review. We’ll dig deep on two frameworks.
Applying Tim Ferriss’s Past Year Review (PYR), which starts with two columns where I list all the major positives and negatives from this year. Then you figure out what you will do more of, and what you’ll do less of.
The second method I discussed is by James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, who suggests answering these 3 questions:
What went well this year?
What didn’t go so well this year?
What did I learn?
Next episode, we’ll start setting goals for 2021. ;)

Episode Notes
On this episode, never has it been more important to plan for next year. We’ll dig deep on:
Practical tips on how to focus on our strength:
Find Your Strength
When to Lean In, When to Let It Go
Good Enough
Superhero Mindset. Routines are great… until they aren’t. Like the Justice League, here’s what it consists of:
Superman - Just as Superman flies high above Earth and uses his super vision to keep an eye on Metropolis, we need to fly high to get a big picture view of our lifestyles.
Batman - Assess your current routine and create a Plan B, C, D and so on.
Wonder Woman - Hold yourself accountable!
Merry Metrics - Here are a few ideas to have fun with as you measure your goals for next year:
One Goal to Rule Them All - Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many numbers and metrics. Instead, just focus on the most important thing in your life that you want to achieve next year.
Mashup Metric - Experts say the best way to form a good habit is to pair it up with a routine you already do. For example, if you want to drink more water, make it part of your routine to grab water while brushing your teeth.
Buddy Up - Ask a friend if they want to trade setting goals for each other.
Your Annual Review, we examine two methods of reviewing and reflecting on the past year.
James Clear, author of the New York Times bestseller, Atomic Habits, does his Annual Review by answering these 3 questions: What went well this year?, What didn’t go so well this year? and What did I learn?
Tim Ferriss, entrepreneur, investor, author, and podcaster, is famous for his Past Year in Review process.
