Hi everyone!
No episode this week. Just a great piece of winter music by Grant Kirkhope from 1998's Banjo-Kazooie, remixed and remastered for Grant's 2021 album Re-Jiggyed! And a brief announcement.
Merry Christmas to you and yours. And if you don't celebrate Christmas, or don't celebrate it today, then happy December 25th!
Love,
Bedroth (@VGMPod) and Shootkapow (@shootkapow)

This week, Bedroth and Shootkapow are joined by the one and only Brent Black, who became famous under his Internet persona "Brentalfloss" by asking one simple question: What if video games...had lyrics?"
Brent is a talented musician and composer in his own right, and he's also an incredibly charming, funny, and nice guy. We hope you enjoy this epic 3-hour conversation covering everything from Mario and Zelda to Ducktales and Shovel Knight to...Flavoured Cats? Whether it's an inspiration, an arrangment, or an original, every tune you'll hear, as always, is Very Good Music!

Greetings, Gamers! This time, we are joined by Shootkapow's good friend (and game developing partner) RJ! RJ's been recommending songs for the show for over a year, and we're really excited to have him on to talk about one of his favorite composers, Shogo Sakai!
Sakai isn't quite as well-known as some of the others we've discussed this season, nor is he as prolific as far as the number of games he's composed. However, he's been involved in the VGM scene for over 30 years, and his work on the massive (and beloved) soundtrack to Mother 3 has made him famous in at least the VGM fandom. And as always, everything we're bringing from his discography is Very Good Music!

Gordon is well known for his hardcore musical style to modern re-imaginings of classic franchises like Killer Instinct, Wolfenstein, and the aforementioned Doom. He also happens to be Alex's favorite composer. We talk about all of that and more, and, as always, we play some Very Good Music!

Greetings, Gamers! This time around, all of our Very Good Music will follow a very specific theme. Nobuo Uematsu is probably the most famous video game music composer in the world. As such, we're going to hone in on a very small but significant corner of his library: Final Fantasy Character Themes!
Our songs today come from Final Fantasies IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X and run the gamut from slow and somber to soaring and heroic. We hope you enjoy this unique take on a composer focus as we look at the work of one of game music's greatest of all time.

Greetings, Gamers, and welcome to another bonus episode! Dusklight joines us once again as we take a week off of the regular full-length episodes we've been droping during our composer-focused season to bring you a special holiday-themed spooky show!
Although they are among the most beneficial creatures on the planet, spiders have always had a creepy reputation. Maybe it's the silken death-traps they make with their butts. Maybe it's their fun way of liquefying their prey from the inside so they can drink them for dinner. Maybe it's just all those eyes and legs! Regrdless, there's some Very Good Music associated withour arachnid acquantances in the wide world of VGM, and we hope you enjoy the songs we've chosen for you.

Greetings, Gamers! For this episode we're joined once again by Skeletroy as we go through the NES library (plus a couple of bonus Bat-tracks) of renowned Sunsoft composer Naoki Kodaka. We have a blast[er Master] discussing one of our very favorite composers who, while he definitely gets attention, is not as widely-known as industry titans like Kondo, Uematsu, and Shimomura.
Still, as this episode will show, few could rival the talents of Kodaka and his team in the realm of Very Good Music on the Famicom/NES.

For this episode, I'm joined by friend, patron, theme song guy, and returning guest Skeletroy to discuss 5 composers recommended by our patrons! Forrest, SprintCade, Carlos, Ryan, and Skeletroy himself all recommended some lesser-known or under-celebrated VGM composers, and all the patrons voted to hear a sampling from all five of them.
We hope you enjoy this crowdsourced collection of Very Good Music!

Greetings, Gamers! For the first time this season (but not the last!) we bring you an episode focusing on multiple composers! This time we wanted to give the spotlite to three non-Japanese composers whose experience doesn't stretch back quite as far as the others we spoke about, but who are doing great work and who we believe have a bright future ahead of them!
Dusklight joins us (as always) for the season's 5th episode, where we Tristan Alric's wonderful, Paper Mario-inspired score for Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling; a wonderful, eclectic selection of tracks from Celeste's Lena Raine, and some highlights from the worldwide phenomenon, Deltarune, the latest work from multi-hyphenate Toby Fox. As always, each of these tracks follows our number one rule: it's all Very Good Music!

Greetings, Gamers! This week we have a very special episode, co-hosted by our first intercontinental guest: Lee Tyrrell, the UK-based creator of The Sound Test podcast, where for over three years, Lee has hosted live VGM celebrations on YouTube and interviewed renowned composers, including the subject of today's show: legendary musician and SID chip composer Ben Daglish. Lee has curated a playlist designed to celebrate Daglish's life and work, and we really think you're going to enjoy this week's helping of Very Good Music.
VGMVGM hasn't explored the SID very much, so this deep dive is long overdue. It barely scratches the surface of this huge, historic part of the VGM landscape, so we encourage you to go on a deep dive of your own into the wonderful world of the C64 SID and its successors.

Greetings, Gamers! This week, Bedroth is joined by the one and only Bryan Clutter, creator of Level Down Games, a multimedia company dedicated to covering the best that pop culture has to offer, through reviews, videos, and podcasts, including BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast, on which Bedroth has been a guest several times! We are more than happy to welcome Bryan to join us this time to talk about his personal favorite VGM composer: Yuzo Koshiro!
As we will learn, Koshiro is an absolute behemoth in VGM history. From his early days with Nihon Falcom working on the Japanese home computer system, the PC88, through his time as a freelance and as founder and president of his own development companny, Ancient, Koshiro has been an enduring presence in the world of games, and the source of a great deal of Very Good Music, just a small taste of which we are happy to bring you today.

Greetings, gamers! Let's talk about some of the most successful, longest-running franchises in gaming. Street Fighter. Mario. Final Fantasy. Mana. Kingdom Hearts. You know what they all have in common? Very Good Music, composed by the queen of VGM herself, Yoko Shimomura!
This week, Bedroth and Shootkapow talk about another of their favorites, one of the most famous video game music makers on the planet. We trace her trajectory from her roots at Capcom all the way through her latest freelance collaboration with K-pop star Taeyeon. From chiptune jams to vocal-orchestral masterpieces, though, everything follows our number one rule: It's all Very Good Music!
So good, this intro says it twice!

Greetings, Gamers, and welcome to Season 4! This season is all about composers! Some of the folks we'll discuss this season may be new names for you, and a few will be very well-known. Our first focus is a special one, though. Yasunori Mitsuda is possibly most well-known as the composer of the phenomenal soundtrack to the equaly phenomenal Super Nintendo RPG classic, Chrono Trigger. But that was just the beginning.
This episode explores a lot of Very Good Music, as always, and ventures into realms of this maestro's discography that surprised even the two of us, who have long counted him among our favorite composers! We can't think of a better way to start this new phase of our VGM road trip, and we're excited to have you along for the ride!

Greeting, Gamers! Welcome to our second consecutive bonus episode, al about the number 4! In season 4, as you've heard, we're using each episode to focus on a particular composer. However, a while back, Shootkapow had the cool idea to play "VGM related to 4 of something". I always figured we'd play it to open up season four...so why not use it as a prequel? It may seem like a limiting topic, but trust us...everything you'll hear is very good music!

Greetings, Gamers, and welcome to a very special bonus episode, where Bedroth flies solo to discuss the songs featured in the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics!
Special thanks to Nikkei on Twitter, who appears to have been the first to publish the official list of 19 songs played in the ceremony. Thanks also to YouTubers Deh Almeida and Nicolas Monteiro, who uploaded rips of the individual themes played at the ceremony which, along with the always-wonderful VGMDB website, helped make this episode possible. Anything I get right today will be a tribute to the information I found there, as well as on various crowdsourced info-banks like Wikipedia (only approved, source-citing articles!) and the Fandom Wiki (for the more obscure stuff).
Here's a link to the MediaFiles episode mentioned in the intro. Seriously, you should totally be listening to this show! https://anchor.fm/the-mediafiles/episodes/Olympic-Games-Tokyo-2020-e15iikh/a-a69t9lj

***Disclaimer for those who listen with kids - there are a few bad words and some dirty humor in this episode, especially the blooper reel. It's not a lot, but be forewarned.***
Greetings, Gamers! And welcome to the long-awaited (at least for me) Season 3 Finale: Superheroes with ProfJeff! The Professor hosted me at his apartment for the weekend and we finally recorded this episode, which we've been discussing for weeks and are really excited to finally share with you. There are a lot of great (and not so great) superhero games out there, and in this jam-packed episode, we bring you a wide variety of tunes featuring some of your favorite heroes, along with a few you've probably never heard of. Of course, everything follows our number one rule: Everything is Very Good Music.
