Episode 156 – The Perils of Nail Trims   This is SUCH an important topic so I was delighted to hear a presentation on nail trims at our recent European College Conference in Slovenia.   Far too often, we "squeeze" a nail trim in between consultations or at the end of a consultation, requiring team members to be pulled away from what they are doing to perform an often very scary and aversive procedure in a short space of time and under pressure.   Not only do nail trims cause fear, anxiety and stress in our cats and dogs, but they can also be a source of pain and discomfort, especially if done incorrectly. There are, of course, situations where nail trims are necessary for health, mobility and comfort, these should however been done with the time, patience and care they deserve.   Have a listen as I chat about the main takeaways from the below paper and share my personal experiences of nail trims and how they can be done in a better way.   The Cooperative Care Episode I mention in this episode is Episode 136 – Cooperative Care with Charlotte Lewis.   And, here's a link to the paper I mention in the episode: Chen, A., Hall, E., Bennington, L.N., McGowan, C. and Quain, A., 2026. "One of the Hardest Things I Have to Do in the Clinic": A Survey of Veterinary Team Members' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Nail Clipping. Veterinary Sciences, 13(2), p.115.   If you'd like to learn more about appropriate pre-visit-pharmaceuticals, then my PSYCHOACTIVE course is for you: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/psychoactive   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!   Facebook Group: Join The Veterinary Behaviour Community on Facebook   You can CONNECT with me: Website: Visit my website Trinity Veterinary Behaviour Instagram: Follow Trinity Veterinary Behaviour on Instagram Trinity Veterinary Behaviour Facebook: Join us on Trinity Veterinary Behaviour's Facebook page Trinity Veterinary Behaviour YouTube: Subscribe to Trinity Veterinary Behaviour on YouTube LinkedIn Profile: Connect with me on LinkedIn   Thank you for tuning in!
Episode 155 – The use of alpha 2 agonist as PVPs before General Anaesthesia   A question I have received quite frequently recently is whether alpha 2 agonist PVPs such as tasipimidine, detomidine, dexmedetomidine OTM gel or clonidine can safely be given to dogs before intramuscular alpha 2 agonist injection for sedation or general anaesthesia.   Have a listen as I chat about my personal experiences and have a look at what the literature has to say about it!   I hope you find it useful!   Here's the paper I mention in the episode: Cambeiro-Camarero, N., Fernández-Martín, S. and González-Cantalapiedra, A., 2026. Preoperative Oral Tasipimidine in Dogs Undergoing Elective Ovariectomy: Anxiolysis, Handling Quality and Cardiovascular Effects. Veterinary Sciences, 13(7), p.618.   If you'd like to dive deeper into the wonderful world of Veterinary Psychopharmacology, I have you covered – My PSYCHOACTIVE course contains everything you need to know: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/psychoactive   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!
Episode 154 – 15 Minute Speed Coaching with Olivia Bury – Getting Caregivers to "Buy In"   Welcome to another 15-minute Speed Coaching Session for Veterinary and Pet Care Professionals! The rules of the game are as follows: ·         Episodes will be in-the-moment, off-the-cuff and unscripted. ·         Coaching sessions will be 15 Minutes MAXIMUM, so wherever we finish, we finish… ·         Which means that we might not find complete resolution to your question, but we will certainly get the thought process started!   In this episode, I chat to Australian based Vet, Olivia Bury, about the sometimes-tricky topic of getting Caregiver "Buy In", especially if they are perceiving their pet's behaviour progress differently to you. Have a listen as we talk through welfare implications, creating strong Caregiver relationships, when to be declarative and when to leave a topic for another time, and how videos, questionnaires and specific questions can be really helpful to help you assess the global situation and get straight to the point, especially if you are short on time.   I really loved this conversation as the human factors of Behaviour Consultations can sometimes be the most challenging aspects!   If you'd like to book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me, you can do that right here: https://calendly.com/trinityvet/teams-and-professionals If you can't find an appointment time to suit you, please email us at [email protected] to find a time that suits us both!   If you'd like to know more about my case-based Veterinary Behaviour Membership – The Behaviour Case Collective – then you can do this right here:   https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/behaviour-case-collective   And… if YOU would like to be part of a 15-Minute Podcast Speed Coaching episode, then apply right here: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/assessments/2148527544   If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe!
Episode 153 – The Canine Regulation Project with Nina Fotara   In this episode, holistic dog trainer, Nina Fotara, and I have such a cool conversation about Nina's new venture – The Canine Regulation Project! We dive into questions such as what "Regulation" means to both of us, how we use the concept in our work, and what it means for both the pets and the caregivers we work with.   As the conversation progresses, we delve deeper into philosophical aspects of working in the Pet Behaviour sector and share how we can broaden our toolkits by considering canine- and human regulation as an important part of our treatment -and care plans!   I really hope you enjoyed this conversation as much as I enjoyed recording it, and if you'd like to learn more about Nina and her work, please read on! Nina Fotara KCAI (WG) is the multi-award-winning Holistic Gundog Specialist™, a trainer and behaviourist at Confident Canine® in Essex, a business built around nervous-system-led work with both gundogs and their guardians. Her tagline, balancing both ends of the lead, captures her approach: working with a dog's nervous system and the energetics its guardian brings, rather than just the behaviour on the surface. Nina is also the founder of the Canine Regulation Project, including the annual Canine Regulation Day on 14 September and the creator of the Holistic Dog® Deck.
