As a Barbadian artist, many of us reach our peak at a young age with our talent, some choose to travel overseas to study dance and others are chosen. Today we delve into topics of the Traveling Dancer. Topics: -Cultural Identity -Taking your culture where you travel -Conforming Vs Adapting -Overseas having more to offer than our island's resources.
We often view dance as just a performing art or entertainment. However, this art form in itself is an amazing tool to discover our cultural identity and heritage. Dance is just not a packaged commodity we export in the tourism industry such as hotels and small “dooflickys,” it’s more than just a show. Today we interviewed @asianbajan85 Christopher Lee a Tourism and Cross Culture Communication Consultant, along with @vjames1001 Valencia James performing artist and Dance Technology Researcher, as they give their views on the ways we can advance dance in Barbados in this new technological age.
In many dancers’ careers, they face several hurdles such as major injuries. Today we go deep into the minds of dancers who have experienced major hip replacements, ultimately going blind after being diagnosed with a severe disease and several joint dislocations! The question is, how did their life as a dancer continue after facing these major life or death decisions.
We see these amazing artists in Barbados who have been extremely success in their spectrum of the arts, whether it maybe Graphic Arts, Painting, Fine Arts, Theatre and Music. However, what most people don’t know is their foundation started in Dance. Today we picked their brains to see how and why they’ve transitioned from dance into other art forms and go deeper to what has inspired them to continue doing what they love.
