Based on a listener enquiry from Becky in the UK, we got into getting started on the wine journey in wine this week. We may not have agreed on everything, but we're happy to have a go - hope we helped. We focussed on wines available in Oz and The Old Blighty. You may not agree with our recommendations, so we are looking forward to you letting us know what you would advise. Any WINE BEEF with what we had to say will be joyously devoured. Let's throw this one about this for weeks and months. Wh...

S2E11: Pizza Chaos

Join us with famous and opinionated wine photog Matt Wilson for our most chaotic episode ever. At the end, I wasn't quite sure what we had just done! Pizza and wine: we had lots of opinions, substantiated by live on-podcast research. Plus your views!! Ceretto Dolcetta D'Alba 2023 Somos McLaren Vale Aglianico 2023 Domaine Marcel Deiss Alsace Complantantion
Watch out, this is is a long one. We really shouldn't try to do more than 2 wines. Sweet wines Darren bought back from Germany are in our glasses - go and find some! We do talk a bit about how these are made, which is damn interesting. Other than that, the focus of the show is hard to work out. However, neither of us had stolen any bicycles recently. Oh... several mea culpas from Darren about inept use of social media. Jacob brings some customer beef, and Darren judges it to be cold, crusty,...
It was an uncomfortable episode this week with confessions from Jacob about stealing bicycles from small children, reminding Darren that he had his bike stolen by adults as a child. Note: All bicycles were stolen from very naughty boys - listen in to find out. A trip to Madeira for the very special sweet wines from this amazing Atlantic Island, probably not our last fortified episode as Jacob faces off against the Wine and Spirits Education Trust for his Diploma exam on, you guessed it, forti...
In a week that we couldn't get Darren to shut up about his recent trip to the German Rhineland, we had a red from the Ahr Valley and a White from the Rheingau - both from historic estates. We really could not shut him up. Wine 1 is a Schloss Johannisberg 2021 Silberback Rheingau Riesling GG (Dry). Founded in 1720 on vineyards originally planted in 817, they are the oldest known Riesling wine estate in the world, and the birthplace of Spatlese Riesling! Wine 2 is a Mayschoss Altenahr 2020 Mays...
What an adventure. What a wild ride. Special guest Angela Oemcke joins us for a sometimes weird ride through the first four of eight sparkling wines that Jake is reviewing for Fleurieu Living. The effort to balance wine reviewing and not being serious hade me in stitches (DO). This episode covers the method traditionally and Chamat wines. Wines were all fantastic - the article is available in Fleurieu Living: Lake Breeze Wines2021 Blanc de Blancs Langhorne Creek Honey Moon Vineyard Rosé...

S2E5: Burgundy Part 2

We really got excited and talked .... for another 40 minutes about Burgundy. We have been in quite a good mood. Again, the amazing wines: Jean Fournier 2020 Borgogne Côte d'Or red Burgundy (available form d'Or to Door) Hubert Lignier 2021 Morey-St-Denis
Jacob spends about 10 minutes waiting for Darren to remember how much he loves Burgundy. Darren had a lot on his liver this week. Amazing wines: Jean Fournier 2020 Borgogne Côte d'Or red Burgundy (available form d'Or to Door) Hubert Lignier 2021 Morey-St-Denis (hard to get)

With Jacob starting to study for his WSET fortified exam, we decided to try a pile of fortifieds that will never be on any exam - all of those por WSET students missing out on th this breaks our hearts. Honey Moon Vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, you made us happy. Very happy as it turns out. Second part of the double episode - this time we went culty and hipster. Darren was all hipster in his flanno and uggies and Jake in a hoodie. It is bloody cold here. This weeks wines were: Munjabel Etna Rosso 2020 - Available at your fancy wine shop (particularly Fall from Grace in Aldinga). Nittardi Chianti Classico Riserva 2018 - Good luck finding this one.

Wine Beef and 321 are now permanent! Also welcome to the first episode in the spaceship. We are really pleased with the new audio kit, hope you like the sound. (And Jake's sound effects) This weeks wine s were: Silent Noise from the McLaren Vale's Riverland Uva Di Troia - Get it from the Cellar Door in the Vale. Stony Rise Tasmania Trousseau - at your wine specialist retailers. Enjoy. Don't be serious.
In the second half of the Sparkling Fleurieu episode, things get hectic. Still very focused ongoing a serious review of amazing Fleurieu bubbles in a not very serious way, things go sideways when Darren's whole family eventually rock into the tiny studio during the episode. I remember laughing a lot and loving the three method ancestral wines and a delightful spritzer. Special guest Angela plus a cameo from Erika. In this episode: Stoke Wines Kangaroo Island 2023 Pet Nat Orbis Wines Mcl...

S1E18: Take 3

This week two and a bit wines. We had a little bit of fun making this - hope you enjoy. We have two segments now - yes actual segments, organised and all. But we want your help. You will hear 3,2,1... in this episode. Any ideas for starting terms, hit us up. You won't hear "wine terms I hate" because the mic broke and we couldn't save it. But it will be back - send us any terms you hate and we will pass judgement on them. This was take 3 on this episode. We have been having some problems with...
This week we just kept going on the two Vintage Aussie fortified (from when we were allowed to call them Port) Two vintage Aussie ports - that you will not be able to find. A great example of Australian fortified history - Sevenhill Vintage Port 1988 and Bleasdale Vintage Port 1990. These were a gift from a mate of Jakes who uncovered a lost cellar. Plus the usual random thoughts. We love the new album artwork and logo that Angela made for us so we thought we would have a go at making the who...

S1E16: Jalapeños!!

2025-06-1334:15

In the first of a double banger episode, we hit three wines and Jalapeños Wine 1 is a Yalumba Gen Organic Sauvignon Blanc which we tasted then added some frozen Jalapeños to find out about this years wine TikTok craze. Our verdict - a resounding yes. The wine over-delivers on its own and with the Jalapeño is a great weekend drink. We bought the SB from Dan's for $14. Two vintage ports - that you will not be able to find. A great example of Australian fortified history - Sevenhill Vintage Por...

JB on a new Mike today, so might not quite have the levels right. Will work on it next week. Two wines plus Maple Syrup fraud today. Wine 1 was a Pol Roger Demi-sec - I'm starting to get used to this now, will miss all this when JBs sparkling exam is done. He is taking it on a date, but there is less than a half bottle left after the podcast. Hard stuff to find. We got it from East End Cellars. Worth the effort. Wine 2 Taltarni Estate Pyrenees Cabernet Sauvignon - lovely cool climate Cabernet...
In an episode where Darren expresses just how happy he will be when Jacob finishes his sparkling exam, JB insists that he will bring Champagne to the episode after he does the exam to celebrate. Will it never end.... (but woohoo). This week Coates McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Adelaide Hills La Petite Cuvee NV (Shiraz and Friends) reminded us that great Sparkling Shiraz is not just for Christmas - it is for every day. Jansz Premium Cuvee Method Tasmanoise was holding up really well consid...
With the drama of the now lost early episodes behind us, we decided to do an episode 1-10 retrospective. We prognosticated and came up with our faves from episodes 1-10. You will have to listen to find out which they were. Sadly, you can't go back and listen to the episodes we discussed some of them. You should know that we agreed on a couple, that Jacob bought every last bottle in Australia of one of them, and it can be hard to choose between your friends.
Jacob finally gets a pop filter and gives Darren back his explorer socks. Happy all round. No surprise with exams coming up that we tasted a sparkling wine - this was a sparkling Vouvray (Vouvray Mousseux) from Dan's - Pure Loire Sparkling Vouvray Brut by Maison Bougrier. Number 2 was a BK Wines 2021 The Fall Single Vineyard Chardonnay from Carey Gully in the Adelaide Hills. Jacob suggested that Darren keep if for a day for it develop. It is all gone. Not a day has passed. It was very very g...

We advertised three sparklers - one Aussie and two Italians, but we changed our mind and went 100% Italian - 2 sparklers and one still. Blatently false advertising. Also Darren threw out two of the bottles before we got the full details off them - oops and sorry. Finally, why we are talking stuff-ups, Darren tried to put the deleted episodes back up (and re-deleted two of them) - turns out that is quite hard and the episodes that might survive would be out of order ... and we might just be be...
