EPYSODE 58: "Willie Nile", by Willie Nile. Guest: Willie Nile. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. This week we spotlight the electric, poetic debut of Willie Nile, whose 1980 self-titled album emerged straight from the streets of New York’s post-punk underground and instantly drew comparisons to Dylan, Springsteen, and Lou Reed. With exclusive commentary from Willie himself, we revisit the making of this cult classic, recorded in the heart of Manhattan during a time when punk grit met folk wisdom. From the raw energy of “Vagabond Moon” to the street-lit soul of “That’s the Reason,” Nile reflects on the scenes and sounds that shaped his early songs. Discovered by Clive Davis and praised by The Who, this album remains a landmark for fans of literate rock 'n' roll. Whether you're discovering it for the first time or dropping the needle again, this epysode captures the urgency and charm of an artist who’s never stopped chasing truth through song. Spoiler alert: he's still going strong. His newest album may be his best... I hope you dig "Willie Nile" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X @VinylRelicsPod Email me @ farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com ===LINKS=== Check Willie's website for merch, tour info, newsletters and more: https://www.willienile.com   ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. Here's a link to a Spotify playlist for all the tracks featured :  https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2sQoDlLmDaWVwdl09nL5k4?si=cb13ab47c0ee49f1 QUILL "Thumbnail Screwdriver" WILLIE NILE "God Laughs" WILLIE NILE "Life On Bleecker Street" BUDDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETS “Peggy Sue” THE BEATLES “I Want To Hold Your Hand” THE WHO “Can’t Explain” TELEVISION “Marquee Moon” TALKING HEADS “Psycho Killer” ROBERT PALMER “Addicted To Love” WILLIE NILE "Vagabond Moon" WILLIE NILE "Dear Lord" WILLIE NILE "It's All Over" WILLIE NILE "Across The River" THE ROLLING STONES “Shattered” THE ROLLING STONES “She’s So Cold” WILLIE NILE "She's So Cold" PATTI SMITH GROUP “Because The Night” WILLIE NILE "I'm Not Waiting" WILLIE NILE "That's The Reason" WILLIE NILE "They'll Build A Statue Of You" WILLIE NILE "Old Men Sleeping On The Bowery" WILLIE NILE "Behind The Cathedral" WILLIE NILE "Sing Me A Song" WILLIE NILE “I Like The Way” WILLIE NILE “Rite Of Spring” WILLIE NILE “Heaven Help The Lonely” WILLIE NILE “Streets Of New York” WILLIE NILE “Children Of Paradise” WILLIE NILE “An Irish Goodbye” WILLIE NILE “One Guitar” ??MYSTERY ARTIST?? This week we spin the self-titled 1970 debut album by Quill, the Boston-based psychedelic rock band best known for opening day 2 of Woodstock and then seemingly vanishing into the mist of rock history. Featuring exclusive commentary from Phil Thayer, Quill's multi-instrumentalist, we dive into the stories behind the band’s brief but electric rise, their unique fusion of psych, prog, and theatrical performance, and why their album never got the recognition it deserved...despite being on a major label. EPYSODE 45 (pt. 1): "Hollywood Dream" by Thunderclap Newman. Guest: Mark Wilkerson, author of "Hollywood Dream: The Thunderclap Newman Story". If you can't beat 'em...ask 'em to be on your show. I thought I was the only Thunderclap Newman fanatic (Thunderhead? Newmanhead??). When I came up with the ingenious idea of interviewing Pete Townshend, my theory was that he was probably so sick of answering the same old questions about The Who and his solo career that he would welcome chatting about this band that he put together and the album he produced. Turns out, I was right. Little did I know however that someone else was already talking to Pete about this very subject, and was delving deep to uncover the story of this almost forgotten band. Who better than to have on the show then the guy Pete says "knows more about Thunderclap Newman than I do". This epysode dives into the story of the unlikely characters that make up this utterly unique band, their fascinating album and the amazing journey author Mark Wilkerson took to write his compelling book. EPYSODE 44 (pt. 1): "Back To The Egg" by Wings. Guest: Wings' guitarist Laurence Juber. Rules are meant to be broken. I couldn't help myself. I know I said that I would be discussing "under-the-radar" types of albums on this show. So why am I featuring an album that sold 4 million copies, won a grammy, and whose bandleader just so happens to be Sir Paul McCartney?!? 'Cuz I love this one!! Many critics (and some fans) have a different opinion of this record. These are the people I like to call...wrong. "Back To The Egg" has divided music listeners for over 4 decades now. With some wonderful commentary from Wings' guitarist Laurence Juber, we break down the songs to explain why this really IS a fantastic album. If you haven't given this one a fair chance, take a listen with us. Maybe you'll be amazed... Thanks for tuning in, turning on & dropping by Vinyl Relics. EPYSODE 42: "Before The Dream Faded" by The Misunderstood. Guest: Misunderstood lead singer Rick Brown. This week we turn the spotlight on one of the most tragically overlooked albums of the psychedelic era... "Before the Dream Faded" by The Misunderstood. Formed in Riverside, California and exiled to London in the mid-'60s, The Misunderstood fused American garage rock with British psychedelia, creating a sound that was years ahead of its time. With searing slide guitar, political lyrics, and sonic ambition to spare, their music foreshadowed both heavy rock and acid experimentation and yet, they faded before they could truly rise. We’re joined by guest Rick Brown, the band’s original lead singer, who shares powerful firsthand stories about the band's creative vision, their turbulent rise, and the circumstances that tore them apart just as they were poised for greatness. It's one of the most fascinating “what coulda been” stories in rock history. Thanks for tuning in, turning on & dropping by Vinyl Relics. I hope you dig "Before The Dream Faded" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X here --> @VinylRelicsPod Email me here --> farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com   ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. Here's a link to a Spotify playlist for all the tracks featured ( *denotes track is not available on Spotify): https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1Pr8RWEhBaLCgU1fP5HAmT?si=56f23d77f6eb4188 GENESIS "Angeline" THE ANIMALS "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" THE MISUNDERSTOOD "End Of Time" THE MISUNDERSTOOD "She Got Me" (version 1) THE MISUNDERSTOOD "She Got Me" (version 2) THE MISUNDERSTOOD "Why" THE MISUNDERSTOOD "Thunder 'N Lightnin'" GLEN CAMPBELL "Rhinestone Cowboy" LEON MCAULIFFE & HIS WESTERN STRING BAND “Take It Away, Leon” *THE GOLDTONES “Gutterball” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Who’s Been Talkin’” THE YARDBIRDS “Mister, You’re A Better Man Than I” THE YARDBIRDS “I’m A Man” THE CREATION “Making Time” THE YARDBIRDS “Shapes Of Things” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Children Of The Sun” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “My Mind” *THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Who Do You Love” THE YARDBIRDS “Still I’m Sad”  THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I Unseen” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Find The Hidden Door” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I Can Take You To The Sun” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I’m Not Talking” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Who’s Been Talking” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I Need Your Love” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “You Don’t Have To Go” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I Cried My Eyes Out” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Like I Do” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “You’ve Got Me Crying Over Love” *THE DIRTY BLUES BAND “Checking Up On My Baby” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Golden Glass” JUICY LUCY “Who Do You Love” HIGH TIDE “Nowhere” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “No Survivors” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Mona” ??MYSTERY ARTIST?? tune in next week to find out... EPYSODE 41: "In The Beginning" by Genesis. Guest: Genesis bassist "Foxy" Fred Rivera. This week we dig into one of the great overlooked curiosities of late-‘60s American rock: "In the Beginning" by the Los Angeles-based Genesis — not the British prog giants, but a raw, garage-psych outfit that burned bright and fast in 1968. With its blend of fuzzed-out guitars, moody organ lines, and Sunset Strip attitude, this epysode uncovers why this album has become a cult favorite among psych-rock collectors and crate diggers alike. We’re joined by  guest Fred “Foxy” Rivera, the original bassist of the band, who shares exclusive firsthand stories from inside the L.A. scene, the band’s short-lived journey, and what really went down behind the recording of their one and only album. Tune in, turn on & drop by to discover the "other" Genesis... I hope you dig "In The Beginning" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X here --> @VinylRelicsPod Email me here --> farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com ===LINKS=== You need to check out Fred Rivera's book "Raw Man".
