Today's special guest is Nikii Post! She is the singer and guitarist for In Lieu, from Minneapolis, who are releasing a new album on Learning Curve Records. Hooligan will be released on Oct. 24th and it is a beautifully heavy record. Nikii's vocals certainly take a center stage with her incredibly powerful raw screaming style. Just this week the band has released their second single off the album with a music video which shows them delivering the goods in studio and it's pretty impressive. you can find that here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIbGk2ILzmkAnd of course you should pick up the vinyl or at least listen to the singles and tell me I'm wrong! Get that here:https://inlieuminneapolis.bandcamp.com/album/hooliganAlbum of discussion being what I imagine Melvins' fans consider a seminal one? I consider it to be one of their best. Not too much facts and stats about this album, but I was able to find some good tidbits for you and learn more about Nikii's artistic development and influence this album had on her. Mark Shippy is here to discuss US Maple's stunning debut album, Long Hair in Three Stages. Partially because it seemed to difficult to sum up what could have been one influential album that helped shape or inform the work that US Maple was making. But in just discussing that topic a little it becomes very evident that typical classic rock had a big hand in that, but what may have been even more crucial was a lot of soundtrack music by the likes of Michael Small and Basil Kirchin. Second being, Long Hair has been reissued for the third time by Skingraft Records, and the first time on a colored vinyl variant. You can visit their store to pick that up here: https://usmaple.bandcamp.com/album/long-hair-in-three-stages-2Much thanks to Mark Fischer for helping make the connect! We also have a new website (still under construction) www.psychic-static.com "buy me a coffee" or stiff drink! What a great band Venus Twins are! If you're not familiar, they're certainly noisy but as I learn in this episode, they've had some musical training, and that shows through in a jazzy, proggy way. Kinda like this album we discuss, The Mars Volta's Deloused in the Comatorium. To be honest, this time I only touch on the album in a surface manner to be able to focus more attention to the impact this album had on these guys and more about The Twins' personal musical journey to get to where they are now, and where they're going. Pretty exciting. The last release the Twins put out was called "/\/\/\/\/"(pronounced Stitching) and it's available through ThreeOneG Records. Get it here: https://venustwins.bandcamp.com/album/pronounced-stitching-epAnd don't forget to follow them to find out when the new release and upcoming shows will be. https://linktr.ee/VenusTwinsFind out more about us and support this show by visiting www.psychicstatic.netTheme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.Thank you!
It is an honor to bring to you Eddie Shaw! The bass player of The Monks! The Monks have been a long time influence and inspiration to me, personally, as well as being a influence over countless bands since 1966 through today thanks to the rediscovery of the band through Ugly Things Magazine in the 90's. Their album, Black Monk Time, has since been reissue many times through many labels and they have even had some previously unreleased songs released for the first time through Jack White's Third Man Records. It's a wild and incredible story which I am honored to have been able to sit with Eddie and try to get a full description of what was happening at the time, what was informing their direction, the continued legacy and what he's been up to lately. I encourage you all to pick up a copy of his book Black Monk Time through the provided links. Also, listen to the album! It's only available to stream through YouTube at the moment.(Light in The Attic Records I'm looking at you!)If you'd like to know more about us and how to support the show, please visit our website www.psychicstatic.netTheme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut/Orbit.https://www.the-monks.com/https://carsonstreetpublishing.com/books/https://youtu.be/-l2D0QfJSt8?si=dfi_TR1ceq6AarWd
I am honored to bring to you today, my conversation with Vashti Bunyan. Who is Vashti, you may ask. Well, she has a book out now, with a paperback release coming this fall, called Wayward: Just Another Life to Live. So, if you'd like to know all the details, I implore you to buy it here:https://a.co/d/9XW5tuII'm not trying to support Amazon, I just can't find the publisher's direct website. In a nutshell, Vashti became disheartened by the record industry, decided to quit music and follow Donovan(Yes, that Donovan!) out to a newly acquired land of his in Scotland with her partner at the time by a horse drawn wagon from London. The journey took a year and a half. And all of that lead to the writing of what would become her now seminal and sought after debut album, Just Another Diamond Day.On today's show, she summarizes that journey even better, while discussing with me an album that wasn't necessarily an influence on her music writing, but certainly an album she loves. There are some connections that are made, but this is a little bit of a different conversation. If you're not familiar with her music, you really ought to listen to some of it. Here is a link to a couple of music streaming sites. https://open.spotify.com/artist/4chuPfKtATDZvbRLExsTp2?si=gw8EHzihRN-WFySkIyHP3Qhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/vashti-bunyan/23956529This was a great conversation, and if you like it too please share with a friend, and please rate or review. Here's something fantastic! Typically on this show we discuss an influential album with an artist that was influenced by it. But today we have Martin Bisi, to discuss an album that was an influence on him, but through helping to create it. Martin met Amanda Palmer in 2001 prior to The Dresden Dolls having even really fully formed. He followed their development over a year ultimately leading up to their, almost, year long stay at BC Studios to record their seminal debut. In this discussion Martin recounts some of his memories of that recording session, as well as some other stories throughout his years behind the board at BC!SEE the documentary, Sound and The Chaos: The Story of BC Studio, staring Martin Bisi here: https://www.bcstudiobk.com/documentaryREAD about the Voice of Gowanus coalition here: https://www.voiceofgowanus.org/LISTEN to the sounds of new bands that recorded at BC Studios here: https://clonebk.bandcamp.com/album/s-t-splitAND here: https://theresistancecompany.bandcamp.com/album/in-memory-ofand HERE: https://whitesuns.bandcamp.com/SUPPORT us by making any type of purchase from our website here: www.psychicstatic.netTheme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.
On this episode, we take you to beautiful, sunny California to speak with Alee Karim. Guitarist and vocalist for The Atomic Bomb Audition. Their new album, Future Mirror, is available now wherever you listen to music. The band's music tends to lean on the heavier side and is categorized as metal for the most part, but there's so much more to this band than just that. Just by listening to the first couple of singles, it's pretty clear that this album has some serious hooks and heavily anthemic moments to grip any casual listener. So, we encourage you to give it a shot. And if you like it, please buy it here: https://theatomicbombaudition.bandcamp.com/album/future-mirrorSome may say, TABA may be too heavy to relate to Pink Floyd, but I'd say there's much more there than meets the eye. So, join us as we dive deep into this 1977 classic. TABA will be performing a record release party at The Golden Bull on Dec. 14th. For more information and all links to follow the band can be found at theatomicbombaudition.netIf you enjoy our show and would like to support us, please visit www.psychicstatic.net to find our label, merch and online store.Theme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.
Oh Man! This is one of those that really hits all the marks of what this show is all about. Mark C and his band, Live Skull, who have been hard at work as one of those bands that helped define the noise rock genre, is here to explain just that! Through a history lesson of music and art culture from one of the most intriguing era's of music and art from a guy who was living it, while digging deep into his thoughts on what was one of the most influential albums to him as a developing artist at the time. He also mentions Live Skull reissues, what lead him underground punk and post punk in the seventies, and a little about a brand new album. They got plenty of some good old ones too. You can pick some of those up here:https://liveskull.bandcamp.com/Either way, you should follow them to hear about updates as they become available. Like they're playing there last show of the year and a stacked line up(I might add)Dec. 8 at TV Eye in NYC!And if you like this show please subscribe here or the YouTube page. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd-jk6_jc7Yf2yxFswPtU5A?view_as=subscriberIf you'd like to support us financially, make us an offer at www.psychicstatic.netTheme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.
After a whirlwind weekend in Texas for No Coast and Levitation Fest, we're back with Seb Alvarez from Chicago, creator of Virgin Mother and vocalist for meth. In a very short span of time, Virgin Mother has 5 short releases under their belt, and now have their first full length, Morning Ritual, out now. You can find it here:https://virginmother.bandcamp.com/For those of you who may know Seb from the bands he's been in, the idea of talking about a record like that of Sparklehorse's It's a Wonderful Life, may seem out of character, but the more I dove in the more I realized, they're not that far off. Don't forget to follow Seb for details of upcoming shows and tours, and if you like this episode don't forget to subscribe to the channel or check out our website www.psychicstatic.net to find ways to support us. Here we are with #9 in our noise rock series for No Coast Fest 2022, and the second to last! I'm pleased to bring you Heet Deth! An absolutely fantastic duo from Chicago with some heavy garage leaning bombastic rock n' roll. Dying Scene.com calls them, “Queer opera nerds turned rockers throwing a perpetual apocalypse party!” And that pretty much sums it up. This was a great conversation which touches on all things involved in that quote and then some. Lots of fun and laughs were had. Allan and Barb Vest, from Oklahoma City, OK, make up the band, doubleVee. A wonderful couple with incredible amount of talent. Their latest full length album, Treat Her Strangely, drops July 15th. It continues where they left off on their last release, 2019's Songs for Birds and Bats EP, with hard driven power pop hooks, meticulously arranged orchestration, with a slight gothic twist. I've always known of Roger Miller to be a primary member of Mission of Burma, Boston's own forefather's of post punk. So, when I discovered the treasure trove that is Miller's discography(including but not limited to) Trinary System, No Man, Sproton Layer, The Moving Parts, etc. I was(and still am) blown away by his body of work. And it's not slowing down any either. As he mentions in this conversation, there is a new reissue of Sproton Layer in the works, as well as a new experimental electric guitar album, and Trinary System will be playing a couple of shows this weekend to prepare to head into the studio to make a new full length! Busy, busy busy. BEDTIMEMAGIC is an amazing two piece rock outfit from Boston, MA. They've been heralded as one of the best noise outfits to come out of the Boston area, and with good reason. To think that just two people are able to make the type of racket these guys are is impressive. Not only will they blow your head off, but they know exactly how to. So, it was my pleasure to get to know this cooky crew and discuss their latest recordings but also a record that helped them get there. Plate Six's 2005 album, Battle Hymns For a New Republic. Impressive and obscure. Let's get into it!Please visit https://bedtimeboston.bandcamp.com/ to find their latest releases, especially the new full length, Between The Sheets. The compilation they have a track on can be found at https://shallownorthdakota.bandcamp.com/album/rhino-body-lover-a-tribute-to-shallow-north-dakotaAs always, find out more about us and what we do at www.psychicstatic.netTheme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.

What an interesting conversation to have with a talented filmmaker and musician, Brandon Perras-Sanchez. Finally an opportunity to ask the question, "Does the influence of an album have the same effect on a film maker as a music maker?" And I was delightfully surprised by the answer Brandon gave. In addition, we touched upon many subjects including but no limited to Sonic Youth's Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, the new feature film he's working on, Saint Drogo, and what it was like releasing a film during a pandemic.
