Voices for Justice

22-year-old Vladek Hasel is a well-known figure in his community. Local shopkeepers, employees, police officers, and countless other residents knew him well. Vladek is approachable and outgoing, always ready to strike up a conversation with anyone and genuinely interested in learning about their lives. He is the kind of person who, after hearing a server’s story of struggling, would leave a $500 tip—while heading back to his own apartment to sleep on a deflated air mattress. However, in the Fall of 2021, something changed. Vladek began voicing fears for his safety. He went so far as to buy a knife and ask a friend if he could borrow a gun and then he disappeared. Bryan Vladek Hasel was 22 years old when he went missing from the Orlando, Florida, area in November 2021. The exact date of his disappearance is unknown. He is white, 5’8” with blond to light brown hair and blue eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he weighed approximately 210 lbs. 14-year-old Emily Pike went missing from her group home in Mesa, Arizona on January 27, 2025. Her remains were found on February 14, 2025, off Highway 60 North near Milepost 277 on Forest Service Road #355, just east of Globe, Arizona. Her case didn’t garner much attention until the Gila County Sheriff’s Office leaked an internal memo describing the horrific way she was found. Her case has since sparked outrage and demand for reform in cases of missing and murdered indigenous persons.   Emily was a Native American female from the San Carlos Apache Tribe. She had brown hair, brown eyes, was 4’10” and weighed 115lbs. She was last seen wearing a pink and gray shirt. On July 1, 1995, 24-year-old Erin Gilbert attended the 20th annual Forest Fair in Girdwood, Alaska, with a man she had met a week earlier at a local bar but never returned home. Investigators say that while they have no suspects, they’d still like to speak with her date to better understand exactly what happened that night.   Erin is 5’11 with hazel eyes and brown hair. At the time of her disappearance, she weighed approximately 145lbs and was last seen wearing a black leather jacket, a black and white striped shirt, black jeans, and brown mountain boots. In Oklahoma City, on December 18th, 1997, 10-year-old Amber Renee Barker called her mom to let her know she was about to start the half-mile bike ride home from a friend’s house, but she never made it home, and her case remains unsolved.   Amber Renee Barker was 10 years old when she went missing from Oklahoma City on December 18, 1997. She is a white female. At the time of her disappearance, she was 5 feet tall, weighed 80 pounds, and had long brown hair. This episode originally aired on August 10, 2023.   At around 3:30 am on March 9, 2019, 25-year-old Aubrey Dameron left her mother’s house near Grove, Oklahoma. She told her family that she was going to meet someone. Aubrey hasn’t been seen since.   This is a case full of confusing leads. Allegations that Aubrey was kidnapped and being held for ransom, an alleged murder confession, and evidence that, in my opinion, needs another look.   For years, Aubrey’s family has searched high and low, but no sign of her has been found. They are desperate for answers.   If you listen to my other podcast, Disappearances, you know that I’ve discussed Aubrey’s case before. I did a joint episode discussing Aubrey and the disappearance of Anthonette Cayedito with a heavy focus on the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous people. It is a very informative episode that is very close to my heart. So, if you’re looking for more information on this epidemic, I absolutely recommend listening to that.   Now we worked on that episode back in 2021, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about these cases, and since then, there have been some updates in Aubrey’s case. So, I thought I would try to bring Aubrey back into the spotlight and draw even more attention to her case with a full-length episode on just Aubrey.   At the time of her disappearance, Aubrey, a 5 foot 9, 130-pound Cherokee woman with brown hair and eyes, was wearing a black leather jacket, black top, black skirt, black knitted hose, and black boots. On February 2nd, 2009, Christine Ross was walking her dog, Ruca, in the West Mesa area of Albuquerque, New Mexico, when they found human remains. When the site was fully searched and excavated, the remains of eleven women were found and identified: Veronica Romero, Doreen Marquez, Michelle Valdez, Virginia Cloven, Monica Candelaria, Jamie Barela, Victoria Chavez, Syllannia Edwards, Julie Nieto, Evelyn Salazar, and Cinnamon Elks. Their cases remain unsolved.   Investigators with the Albuquerque Police Department believe that the cases of eight additional women who went missing from the area around the same time may be related. On December 28th, 1956, on the south side of Chicago, 12-year-old Patricia Grimes and her 15-year-old sister Barbara Grimes left their home to go to the Brighton theater to watch Elvis Presley’s movie Love Me Tender for the 11th time. The sisters were seen at the theater by classmates and then seemingly vanished. At around 1:00 am on December 25, 1945, Jennie Sodder woke up to smoke pouring into her bedroom. She woke up her husband, George, and they started evacuating the house of their nine children. By the time the fire took over the Sodder residence, only Jennie, George, and four of their children made it outside safely. George and two of his sons frantically tried to get into the house to save the remaining children, but they couldn’t. When George went to fill up a bucket with water to start extinguishing the flames, the water was frozen, when he went to grab their ladder to get his children from the top story, the ladder was missing; when he went to drive his trucks to the second story window, neither would start despite having worked just the day before. And when they tried to call the fire department for help, no one responded for hours. The only thing the family could do was watch as their home burned to the ground. Hours later, after the smoldering ashes were put out, a group of people began searching for the children’s remains, but nothing was found. Not a single bone was found in the ashes. The fire was quickly ruled an accident, and investigators told the family the children’s bodies had burned up completely in the fire, leaving nothing of them behind, not even their bones. But between the mishaps, while trying to put out the fire, threats made against the family before the fire, and the strange behavior of authorities throughout the investigation, Jennie and George Sodder refused to believe five of their children were killed in the home. It was the Gilbert Police Department, and they told him that his 19-year-old daughter Rachel had been shot in her apartment. Despite doctors working on her for hours, she was gone. When Joseph Augustus Zarelli’s remains were discovered in 1957, the city of Philadelphia was horrified. He was only four years old, and his identity was unknown then. Hundreds of thousands of flyers with his photo were distributed across the country, and his case became one of if not the most notorious in the city’s history. It took over 60 years and new technology to finally identify him, and now that investigators have his name, and are still working hard to find his killer. Joseph Augustus Zarelli was white, with blue eyes and brown hair. When he was killed, he was 3’6” and weighed approximately 30lbs.
