Usually, dental technicians frown upon dentists that do their own work. I mean, we get it, but we still want to do the work for you. But some dentists go as far as turning it into a 15 person lab doing work for other dentists. That we can get behind, because at that point they are creating careers for dental technicians. Dr. Donny Domingue followed an uncle to become a dentist. Wanting to do more with implants, he did a residency in New York that allowed him to place many. Once he found his home again in Lafayette, LA, Dr. Domingue started working with labs for his implant restorations. He found that he needed to educate many labs on the proper way to make a custom abutment. That's when he started doing his own. It wasn't long before he was doing them for other dentist and opened Louisiana Dental Implant Lab (https://www.ladentalimplantlab.com/). It was after training a bunch of engineers to be dental technician that Dr. Domingue developed the Vortex screw (https://www.ladentalimplantlab.com/collections/vortex-screws/products/vortex%E2%84%A2-1-4mm-direct-to-mua-screw) to help him with his own full arch cases. When choosing implant components, there are a lot of options out there. You COULD go OEM, but there is a lot to be said about cost and workflow when going with a third party option. How do you choose which option to go with? This episode we discuss why two people have chosen DESS Dental Solutions (https://www.dess-usa.com/?srsltid=AfmBOop0MkxSp_PWNT-yIBXnCm-22lVq4PeYO5AXuhvZdLfC2Zi0nMDR) for their implant workflow. This super elite club is only for the best of the best Creating good culture in a dental lab is not easy. It takes dedication from owners and managers to set the path that the lab can follow. Two brothers both went through the apprenticeship program with John Archibald in the 90s. Darin Swartz was instantly hooked and opened up Swartz Dental Arts in the basement of a dental office after graduation. Followed by his younger brother, Mike Swartz graduated and opened his own lab. You would think they would partner up, but for 15 years they ran separate labs in the same space. After seeing technology coming into the industry, it was time to partner up and create Diamondhead Dental Lab (https://diamondheadlab.com/). They talk about doing their own apprenticeship program, growing to 40 employees, creating a culture of partnership and quality, how they stay relevant in ever changing workflows, and staying true to their "North Star" Check out Culture Camp Podcast: https://www.iamjasonhaugen.com/culture-camp Listen to John Wilson from Sunrise Dental Lab (https://www.sunrisedentallaboratory.com/index.php) and take your own lab to the next level by getting in on some of Ivoclar's End of the Year deals (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us/campaigns/ivoclar-equipment-promotions-2024?utm_source=website&utm_medium=content_tile&utm_campaign=equipment_promo) on equipment. So it's probably safe to say that more labs have 3D printers than don't. And more and more dental offices are getting them too. It's a crowded area with a lot of different printers and resins to choose from. Joining the podcast this week is a IT and computer expert that years ago helped some dentist get into printing. Many labs outsource something. Designs, milling, or printing to ease the workflow and be able to do more work efficiently. But what about case entry and billing? Sometimes people put their best employees in those departments to make sure everything comes in correctly and more importantly gets invoices correctly. But it's never anything that a lab could outsource... until now. This week we meet Randy Berry and Jessica Wallen who says they can handle all of our incoming and outgoing work for a fraction of the cost of what you pay someone to do it. Randy and Jessica worked in a lab and struggled with case entry. Even in their smallish lab. Randy has run many large labs and saw that no matter what size, this was a bottleneck in any lab. It was Jessica that said there should be a better way. They started Certaineed Consulting (https://www.certainteed-consulting.com/), where they have a team of remote people that will do everything you are currently doing with your incoming and outgoing work. They talk about where the idea came from, how they set it up for each individual labs, how they overcame all the questions you have about it, and how it can help you find more technicians that are already in your lab. This week we get to know Stephenie Goddard and her history with Glidewell. Starting 18 years ago to run their HR department, she has seen Glidewell go from 1,100 employees to 5,000. Due to power outages and flooding from the hurricane, many of our lab friends are in need of help. The amazing Shawn Nowak of Nowak Dental Supplies (https://www.nowakdental.com/) has started a GO FUND ME to help those in need. But when we found that they don't and this dentist just does amazing restorations for patient's that can't usually afford them, we knew it would be a great episode. Dr. Ben Kellum went to dental school not really knowing what he was getting into. It was there that he learned to really like implants and took an opportunity to run a residency program doing implants and full arch for drug rehab patients. It was there that he learned that doing the lab work himself allowed him to keep the cost down and pass that along to the patients. Now, him and a partner own Transcend Dental Clinic (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100087041301281) in Huntsville, Alabama doing pretty much the same thing. Thanks to the help of donations and vendors believing in what they are doing, they are able to offer complex and quality treatments to patients that usually can't afford complex and quality treatments. Thank you to everyone that donated to our Race for the Future 10 triathlon. This was the biggest one yet in terms of money brought in. All of this money goes right back in to our industry and remember you can give all year long! https://dentallabfoundation.org/ Sometimes the business part of the lab is not the most exciting. But honestly, it's super important for everyone to understand in order for a lab (or any business) to be successful. The thinking that more units equal more profit is just not true. The one to help your lab is David Lesh from 8&9 Consulting (https://www.8and9consulting.com/). David is back on for a third time and now he is sharing the secrets of the financials that labs need to be profitable. David emphasizes that if you're not growing profitable sales, you're merely exhausting your resources without reaping the rewards. He also shares practical tips on how to reduce COGS and set key performance indicators (KPIs) to track and improve financial performance and a unique approach to setting prices based on turnaround times, which can significantly increase the average selling price and overall profitability. A lot of financial terms are used, so luckily David takes the time to explain to Elvis like a 3rd grader. Charlie comes on to talk about how though an engineering program, he found the dental laboratory industry. Getting hired at Bristol Crown (https://www.bristolcrown.com/), a lab-to -lab milling center for the ALS Dental Group (https://als-dental.com/). He starts by loading mills and scanning models, and soon noticed of how many of the crowns looked the same. Pushed by self-learning, Charlie was soon designing crowns in Exocad (https://exocad.com/) and he even started making teeth libraries for other labs in the ALS group. Going back to lab school, he had an assignment of drawing crowns and a new passion started. Now Charlie is taking his art to the next level by creating detailed and brightly colored pieces that include not only crowns, but implants, abutments, full arches, dentures, and so much more. Check out his art and get yourself a few prints: https://www.redbubble.com/people/cimbdesign/shop?asc=u Introducing Ivotion Digital Dentures (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us/products/digital-processes/ivotion) from Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) – Experience unparalleled precision and efficiency with Ivoclar‘s state-of-the-art digital denture workflow. If you spend any time at dental shows or just around the industry in general, you have probably crossed paths with Jamie before. You see, Jamie started in the industry back in 1998 after a suggestion from his dentist brother. After finding his way into a dental lab, Jamie has been a delivery driver, model room technician, ceramist, and so much more. It wasn't long before he was manager and even Operations Manager. While he was moving the lab from analog to digital, Jamie found the Carbon Printer (https://www.carbon3d.com/) and discovered something great. He now works for them as Senior Manager of Application Strategy and Integration. What does that mean? Well, we had to ask too. Turns out Jamie gets to help any lab with a Carbon printer with any question or issue the lab has. Even if it isn't related to the Carbon Printer. How cool is that? He's also the current Chair of The National Board for Certification (https://nbccert.org/homepage.cfm) in Dental Laboratory Technology and talks about the importance of getting your certification and giving back to the industry. This super elite club is only for the best of the best. We all know the minute we remake something in the lab, the profit is gone. We just accept it and do our best to not have any remakes. But ALSO, a lot of it is not our fault and to keep a dentist happy, we eat it and do the remake anyway. What if there was a way to warranty everything the lab does for 5 years? I mean EVERYTHING..... even removables. Not only does that make your lab more attractive to dental offices, just think how easier it would be if every remake was a simple "okay" because you knew you would be paid for the remakes. Well, enter Quantum Health Holdings (https://quantumhh.com/). Less than a year ago, Jack Manno and Kim Solomon met insurance and warranty expert Max Zanan. Max has been working in the auto insurance area for a while and now he provides the service to dentist warranting their work. Jack and Kim thought it would be perfect for dental labs. Learn how you can provide a service to dental offices that most labs can't (or don't) offer, all while building good wealth for either retirement or to reinvest back into your lab. File organization, nesting, adding pins and supports... the list goes on. Kris Wouters has a long history in the 3D printing industry. After joining OQTON and working on automation strategies, Kris and the rest of the dental division started their own company to focus on the dental lab industry. They started OQCAM (https://oqcam.com/) to help labs streamline and simplify their digital workflow. Kris talks about his history, the history of the company, some great examples on how OQCAM can work in a lab, and how it's scalable to work with labs of all sizes. A great meeting with a great company. Go show them some love and get some MIYO. First up we talk to two legends in our industry, Dany Sakr and Nick Azzara. Nick talks about what he is doing with a DSO group and reminisces about his time working with Dany. Dany talks about his journey from Lebanon to the US to learn dental technology in the early 80s, getting into digital early in it's existence, opening Sakr Dental Arts (https://sakrdentalarts.com/), and how they keep their lab relevant about just making crowns. Then we meet for the first time Ifet Ahmeti. Ifet learned the craft in Albania in 2009. Since then she has been in Switzerland to learn quality, Indiana to learn removables, and then opened her own in-office lab in Philadelphia. She has since moved to Tampa, Florida and opened another lab, Dentart Dental Studio (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063693726196). Ifet talks about managing clients when you are a solo technician, the importance of using the best materials, and why seeing patients allows you do make the best restoration. Then we wrap up all of the FDLA with past podcast guest, Whitney Coutney. Whitney has had a great journey from assistant to in-office tech in Kentucky, to full arch designer in Florida. In 2022 she wanted to get into education and partnered with Nowak Dental Supplies (https://www.nowakdental.com/) to on-board and teach labs the digital workflow. Whitney talks about how she handles labs doing a "software switch", helping technicians learn practical uses of either 3shape or exocad, and how she keeps up on the ever-evolving technology. *NOTE - Since recording with Whitney, she had taken a position back at Midwest Dental Arts (https://www.midwestdentalarts.com/) doing what she loves best. If you are interested in getting into education and doing what Whitney did, reach out to Nowak Dental Supplies as they are looking for someone with the same passion for teaching. Elvis and Barb are back again this week recording wonderful people at the Jensen Dental (https://jensendental.com/) booth at the Florida Dental Laboratory Association (https://www.fdla.net/) Symposium. THANK YOU JENSEN! (go get MIYO) First up is MIYO (https://miyoworld.com/) expert, teacher, guru Terry McQuiston. Terry talks about his dental journey that eventually landed him at Jensen Dental teaching everyone the wonders of this amazing liquid ceramic. His role now is onboarding labs and making sure they have their "ah ha" moment and not become "missing in action". Then we meet the new VP of Global Sales for Argen (https://argen.com/), Juston Gates. Juston is new to not only Argen, but also our industry. He talks about where he came from, how it compares to our profession, and some exciting things that Argen has just released. We wrap up the episode with everyone's favorite person to see at a dental show (and if you don't know her, go be her friend), Nina Rapuano. Nina talks about joining Jensen Dental as her first "adult job", why she loves the people and culture, and giving back every year and swimming during the Race For the Future (https://dentallabfoundation.org/news-events/race-for-the-future/).
